Jared Cook - Where are the targets? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I am a Cook owner. I did search for a thread back to the beginning of September - 3 pages. If it bothers you that I didn't dig deeper to find the "official" Jared Cook thread, please leave my thread to those who care to discuss the topic. Thank you.

Here is what Yahoo shows for Cook's catches/targets/catch % so far this season:

Week 1: 7 of 10 = 70%

Week 2: 1 of 6 = 17%

Week 3: 5 of 7 = 71%

Week 4: 4 of 9 = 44%

Week 5: 3 of 3 = 100%

Week 6: 2 of 2 = 100%

  • Just looking at stats (I am unable to watch games), I see 4 out of 6 weeks with a very high completion rate. Certainly, his catch percentage doesn't seem atrocious or to justify fewer targets.
  • I had thought that Kendricks was seriously cutting into Cook's targets. But in looking at Kendrick's stats, the numbers don't seem to back that up (targets: 4,3,5,1,6,2). It's probably Kendrick catching a TD in each of the last 3 weeks, that led me to believe that.
  • The Rams have not had the high passing volume that many of us had hoped for, so clearly that itself is a limiting factor in the number of TE targets.
My question is, does anyone have a knowledgeable opinion as to whether there is a reasonable possibility of his targets increasing as the season progresses?

The only upward trend for Cook and the rest of the passing game is STL seems to have figured out that Austin is hot garbage for the short term and had decided to stop forcing balls to him. Cooks blocking assignments are atrocious is my understanding for the lack of work he has been given. I'd move on to other options if you can. Shop him as he may have a tad of trade value from his week 1 heroics.

If the issue is his blocking, then yeah... time to move on. If it were a rookie with blocking issues, that'd be one thing. But a vet? That just goes to lack of heart.

Thanks for the commentary.

I think the only way this works is if Schottenheimer decides to move him out wide more (like he's paid to be a WR after all). They've cut back on Austin's snaps so I'm not sure what the Plan B is there, but it could have been Cook (but apparently isn't).

In the week 6 beyon the stats article it shows that StL is actually 3rd in the league in team targets per game to the tight end. Week 1 might have played a lot into that, but still if so it doesn't leave a lot of room to improve for Cook unless, again, they play him out wide.

I will add Rudolph just went off on Carolina. In one league I'm starting Cook just to give this one more shot. Patience is running thin and this is starting to look a lot like Nashville.

As both a Cook and Austin owner, I'm hoping the return of Saffold and emergence of Stacy will give the offense enough ballast to start up that passing game again. A fast-break passing game seemed to be the Rams plan all summer long, maybe they go back to it.

I'm going glass half-full here but you don't purposely go out and acquire weapons like Cook and Austin to not deploy them eventually. I suppose an argument could be made as to how weapon-y they really are:)

Kudos to Kendricks whom I thought his career was all but over. He's stepped up like it's still a camp battle and Fisher is letting em' battle it out.

Two things:

1) Last game, they were blowing out the opponent, so there were less targets to go around.

2) He's a HORRIBLE blocker. I'm not talking about him not being able to block...he just doesn't want to. He's soft. He doesn't even try. There have been multiple times where he just lets someone past him after barely making an effort to stop him. He's a huge p####.

Almost sounds like praise for Fisher

I have no doubt he was a big decision maker, if not the key one, to sign off on giving a TE he knew could not block major guaranteed money. If I'm the owner of this team I'd need an explanation why I'm guaranteed to pay a guy at least $19 million and he can't get on the field because of something he's not been good at since he got in the league. Something the current head coach had first hand knowledge about when he likely green lighted the signing.

Truly I meant it toward Kendricks. One quite bad, one good (wise?) crow eating move.

Yeah I'm sure he gets a ton of the blame-quite frankly, he's the reason Cook was on the Titans so long and he brought the problem there. Whatever the reason, there's a wise decision, after the bad one, to let others play. I think some other coaches would force the issue and ...I think an ounce of credit goes to him for putting two other TEs in the passing game. Rest, totally blame-ful

So what's FIsh's thinking? Is it-Cook will come around? He's never going to amount to what I thought? Well at that salary and cap hit, he's going to be here a while so let's quit trying to push him?

There's definitely a "stuck" feeling too I'm sure.

Cook still has time to step up. I do still plan on another good game or two, he hasn't sufficiently teased Rams fans yet. In TEN, Cook was often good the last 4-5 games which brought the hope for the following year.

The OC is terrible and has never developed any player into a fantasy football stud. Whenever something works he immediately outthinks himself and does the opposite.

So I shouldn't go out and get him hoping for dump off passes?
Cook versus what's left on a WW thus far into a season....first sign a personal contract that you drop him if he stinks....maybe he's better than what's available, worth a shot for a week. Frustrated Fisher played him at WR in TEN a little bit.

Deep league....

i'm still patiently waiting for a TD from cook. He's getting targets (42 total and 6th in the NFL for TE targets), respectable yardage totals... but no TD's yet. I think based on volume alone the potential is there for cook to produce at mid TE1 levels ROS if he can start scoring TD's. Just a thought for those ina similar plight hoping to find TE production that may still be out there on the WW (his bye is over too)

He had a couple of drops v.the 49ers as well as a bad penalty that brought back a nice catch. Was targeted frequently and seems to hold value.

Next year I'm drafting Brandin and Jared, then calling my team Too Many Cooks.
How's that working out for you?

Anything to see here? Dodds has him super high this week, anyone rolling with him?
Maybe. He's on my bench but could see playing him over Bennett as the flex. in another league, it's Cook vs. Heath Miller vs. Olsen, flex option there too. He won't light it up but he's probably good for a handful of points.

Dodds early call projects me to start Chris Owusu. Since he's out for the next two weeks I think I'll leave him on the wire.

I feel like every year somebody gets excited about Jared Cooks potential. Is he ever the answer? Think I'd rather roster a guy like Ebron or ASJ with true upside.

Of WW options the FBGs staff is super high on Crockett Gilmore this week. I get that Tressman is trying to different things - tons of running out of the shotgun last week, something they rarely did last year - but I expect him to fade away next month when Perriman starts getting activated.

TE is definitely a challenge this year for many FF owners.

Ya I'm struggling as I have Walker, then went and got ASJ who is now out for a month and is droppable. Need a TE this week so I'm trying for Gillmore but with low priority I may not get him. Need to choose Cook or Clay so wanted some insight onto Cook as I will likely be starting him this week.

I'm sure his projections will change over the week but even if he stays in his top 10 that's not a bad spot start.

My bad on ASJ, didn't realize he got hurt. I'm just rolling Kelce every week.

This morning I picked up Ebron, as much to be a cockblock as anything. Then I realized during lunch he's got the same bye week as Travis.

:bag:

I liked Clay when he was a Dolphin, they moved him around a lot. Not sure if Buffalo is utilizing him the same way this year. Might be an interesting week since he's playing his old team.

13 targets in two games so far... by far the leader among Rams' W/T. And 10/132 is pretty solid. Throw in a TD and people would be rushing the WW. He should be rostered in every league IMO.
