What do you call the guy who graduated last in law school?

Pedophile Attorney

Just kidding Woz... but seriously of all the law you could practice why this?
It's certainly not the only area I practice. I carry a predominantly criminal caseload (which are a mixture of privately paying clients and court appointed clients like Henry mentioned) and also a family law caseload. Child porn cases are not super common so at any given point I usually only have one or two.As for why I take them, Henry ford kind of alluded to it earlier - a good defense attorney handles all sorts of cases. I've done everything from defending people of low level petty misdemeanors to murder. And I view my job as the last bastion of hope for the innocent and, for the guilty, the one line speed bump to slowing down the overreacting public and ensuring that the rights of everyone, even the guilty, are followed. I'm not a magician. If a person does something bad and the state can prove it I can't make it go away. But I can ensure that they're given a fair sentence accordance with the law and, at the very least, got their side of the story told if the case does goes to trial. I think this thread is a great example of why that's important b/c without that speed bump the people like those in here literally calling for Jareds head would have their way.

That said, I specifically don't shy away from these cases in my jurisdiction b/c I find my jurisdiction's sentencing guidelines to be utterly absurd. A person is supposed to get ten years for each picture and those ten year sets must run consecutive to each other (I.e. Possess ten pictures you get 100 years). While I still haven't been able to desensitize myself to seeing these pictures and I personally find them disgusting and believe possessing them should be a crime requiring some incarceration, the idea that somebody can go away for life for possessing some pictures is an injustice to me. So, I choose to fight the fight most others never would.
Yeah, people are idiots. Keep up the good work, counselor.

The idea that the state should be able to do whatever it wants to someone, completely unchecked, just because it accuses the person of child molestation, is pretty dangerous, IMO.

Criminal defense attorneys are the ones who stand in the way of that dangerous situation.

I've got a lot of respect for Zow as a lawyer. He is practicing law at its very essence. I certainly couldn't handle that kind of practice. Mad props to you from a lowly civil lawyer.

Been on this board for ages, and the first time I have ever clicked "like this post" was for Zow's.

Would have never predicted that.

You're doing good work, Zow.

Thanks. But the type of work biglaw guys like you and Otis do carry additional stressors and expectations that I'm not near good enough to handle. I find it incredible that you guys can do that work and still have time to be good family men and live out your hobbies. Don't know how you do it.

I figured the FBI had more than a few pictures on his phone. Really sick, just don't get why it took so long to take him down.

Why are they so stingy with their napkins? They give you one, maybe two with your meal and they're kept behind the counter.
It's because of slobs like you using too many of those expensive napkins that they don't have 5 dollar footlongs anymore.
I think KFC annoys me the most. They never give out any butter or jelly with the biscuits, you have to beg for it. Except when they do eventually give them to you, it is like a handful of way more than you can use.

This is a tiny little part of why this country is so ####ed up. We are so scared to talk about sex and topics around sex, plus we love celebrities and people in power that when one of them enters into that space be it a priest, a fat guy that lost some weight, or a defensive coordinator for a big10 school, or a black comedian people don't want to blow the whistle until the evidence is overwhelming.

Why will we throw people in jail over a joint, but can't make up our minds to even bring someone in for questioning for 4 years from this.

What the #### is wrong with people?

To be honest, I have no reason to check this thread again. I dont need to think about the dude no more....and for that reason, I am out.

They had him on tape basically saying he liked diddling little kids over 4 years ago, and needed him basically to be caught red handed to move forward.

From the story, the whole "FBI informant" angle seemed kinda murky. Was she officially an informant from the start of the recordings? I imagine that either they needed more concrete proof and/or were building at bigger case against more people.

It is shocking that subway wouldn't have reacted any sooner though.

That woman is wired differently than I am. I think I'd make it maybe 2-3 seconds top of listening to somebody discuss sexually assaulting my child or his/her friends before I threw my ####### fist and elbow through their teeth. Jail time be damned.

social media being what it is, you ruin this guy just leaking that out. Could even claim you were "hacked". She owns some responsibility here for everything that happened from that point forward.

That last page is classic reading....it goes from "Woz, you're a real hero, a defender of liberty" to "Let's kill Jared!!! Put a bullet in 'em" in about 2 seconds.

15.6 years doesn't seem like enough time
It exceeded the recommended plea deal worked out with the prosecution, which is really unusual. Comments from legal experts are that the judge threw the book at him.

Doesn't appear to be an example of "celebrity justice" that Nancy Grace always talks about.

Yeah, this is more than I thought he'd get (10-12).

For those wondering why the judge was able to go above the range in the plea agreement, that is a unique trait to federal criminal law. In most state jurisdictions (at least the ones I'm familiar with) the judge usually only has the option of outright accepting or rejecting the plea and if the judge accepted the plea he or she would be bound by the sentencing limitations in the plea agreement.
