You would think he is not fully healthy based on his stats the past few weeks. However, he practiced in full on Friday and yesterday while preparing for Thursday's game. I was planning on benching him for Dustin Keller this week. But why do I get the feeling if I do so he will regain his top form on Thursday?

What is everyone else's plan for this week and going forward?

Facing the exact same decision and I know if I bench Witten he will go off. I just don't like the fact he hasn't finished a game healthy in his last two starts. Keller is also becoming fairly dependable and has a decent matchup against Denver.

LOL, make is a third for the Witten/Keller decision. I already locked up a playoff spot, so I'm goint to roll the dice and start Keller. He can't be worse than what Witten has been giving me....

I have Witten, but now I need an insurance policy for the playoffs. I'm looking at Lewis or Carlson as a backup. I'm already in the playoffs, but would like to have a team in which I have healthy alternatives for each position.

If I don't get either of those two, then I'll have to make a trade for a somewhat reliable TE.

Bench?

I have Witten in a no mandatory TE league and I was just looking at who I could add for him to help bolster my WR3 position for the playoffs. If he doesn't show me something on Thurs... he's WW fodder for sure.

I would expect him to gradually improve over the next 2-3 weeks. I would stash for the playoffs and start other options for now.

Did Baker and Franks play in the Jets game this weekend? Will their role be expanded this week?

I just don't want to get burned starting Keller if his value has been overly inflated by the lack of health for Baker and Franks.

I saw Romo really trying to get him involved last game and a few were just off his fingertips. He'll be fine and finish as TE1.

Starting him. Full practice yesterday. Took a huge hit on Sunday, left the game briefly because of his jaw, then came back in. Jaw is OK, the ribs held up.... why would you sit him? All systems go. Romo almost 100%, timing will only get better. He could have had a huge game this past Sunday. Could have had a nice reception on the sideline that was called out of bounds but it seemed he tapped his toe but they chose not to challenge. On the huge hit he took that could have been a big gainer. On the Bennett TD, Witten was clearly the first read and ended up getting wide open in the back of the end zone but Bennett caught Romo's eye getting open running right in front of him. Not sure why someone would bench him for any other TE, not like there are others who are going to be guaranteed points. At least Witten always has that explosive potential. I have a feeling he scores this week. Just a hunch.

The problem though is that it likely hurts like heck when he extends or raises him arms. He should be better in a couple of weeks but I would start with caution for now.

I am very concerned about Witten. His matchup is good this week...really good. I really think that rib injuries are a season killer. Since the player can walk and run ok they try to play. But one good shot to the body and I gotta think it is serious pain. I messed up my ribs a few times buyt never broke one....that alone hurt like hell, granted I dont get pain injections, but it was a long healing process and I'm not getting beat up every week like he is.

I'm rolling with Boss this week....hopefully even if I lose, I am still in the playoffs.

Keller is an interesting option, I myself have Boss and he's outscored Witten of late, but I look it from the perspective of the Cowboys. They will be pedal to the metal as a team to make the postseason from here on out and I think Witten will be a big part of that each week. He's always been that underneath safety net, and should only be moreso with Jones out for the season. Keller's been hot though, and I guess you could have had Owen Daniels paired with him if you got him late in a draft, but other than that, other than that original big 3 of Gonzo, Gates and Winslow, I can't see too many guys worth starting over Witten at this point. He's a gamer and he'll give his all to see their way into the playoffs, which benefits the fantasy player.

Witten vs. Billy Miller vs. Vernon Davis here.Thinking of throwing a dart.
I would go with Miller. Brees is the best QB of the 3, is going for Marino's record, is playing in a must win division game and Bucs are one of the best teams at shutting down WRs (Ronde Barber; Talib etc) with the cover 2 scheme. The TEs should do better against the Bucs.

Witten vs. Carlson for me. If I win this week (and another guy loses) I am in the playoffs. If I lose, the season is over for me. I NEED to win. That being said, I don't know how I can bench Witten this week, primetime on Turkey day with Romo at as close to 100% as he's gonna be. If I bench him, its a mortal lock that he will grab 6/100/TD.

I don't know either I've got to decide between him and Daniels. I like both of them but both have had decreased production.

The real issue to me is that before the injury Tellus was running Witten's drag route and got a TD on it. This is pretty huge that they don't want him going over the middle like that for fear of injury. That's his bread and butter play and he's not going to get it anymore, or at least for the next little while.

This is about where I would stand as well. Targets have been down of late that tells me they're relying on him more as a decoy than anything else right now. I wouldn't count on him for Thursday, but I would begin giving him serious consideration at Pittsburgh 10 days later. He's still Romo's guy, or "bread and butter" as someone mentioned, and he'll be looking for him against the Steelers. Witten should be feeling much better by then as well.

I have Witten and he has been obviously dissapointing the past couple of weeks. I dropped Olsen to pick up Keller and will be starting Keller the rest of the way until I see Witten have one of his"usual weeks". Keller and Favre have been connecting the past 3 weeks.....

I am leaning toward sitting Witten. My thought is the Boys get an early lead and he goes to the bench for safe keeping when they need him next week against Pittsburgh.

 i didn't get to see the game, so having someone relate these facts is huge in making my decision to keep him in the lineup (esp. the Bennett TD comment). not that i had any room on my roster to make a change anyhow...

This is my toughest decision of today. Do I roll with him in a must win and chance taking another 1-2 points, or go out and get a middle-the-road TE to replace him? With Romo starting for me, I'm having trouble sitting this guy.

In the same boat. The last couple of weeks with Witten have been brutal and cost me at least one game. My other TE is Carlson, who's good for 6-8 pts a week but I need more upside this week. That said, I'm rolling with Witten today -- hopefully the thought of a big mound reward of Thanksgiving Day stuffing will be just the motivation he needs.

I've had Witten and Scheffler pissing away a position on my roster each week for most of the season. These guys weren't even getting Targets, much less Catches

Sooo, I picked up Heath Miller this week to see what he can do. I think Big Ben likes Miller and would prefer to spread the ball in the 7-15 yard "bread-n-butter" range (along with Hines) instead of the bombs to Holmes and Washington.

3 TE's on a roster of 16 is painful though (keeper league) - I've only got 4 WRs.

Like others, the toughest decision of the week. I picked up Boss from the WW earlier in the week, had him slotted to go, but reversed course and am hoping for some Romo-Witten magic today.

Witten will play today. Also looking at the injury report Martellus Bennett has been limited in practice and is listed as QUESTIONABLE. I think this has to bump Witten up some.

He's looked great so far, but clearly isn't taking the big hit for the extra few yards as usual - those ribs are definitely hurting him.

I hate the cowgirls, but he's a great player.

 Props.

I think Jason Witten is tied with Tony Gonzo as the #1 tight end heading into the FF Playoffs. He may be preferable to Gonzo, actually.

Good analysis here, Nips. I didn't really have much choice but to start Witten, since I didn't bother drafting a quality backup after rostering him to begin with.

I had the misfortune of having Dustin Keller available on my ww a few weeks ago. After watching Witten do almost nothing for me and Keller post solid stats I decided that this would be the week I started Keller and waited for Witten to get fully healthy. Still have tio wait for Sunday, but I'm not liking my decision at the moment.

got outbid in this exact situation... "had" to start Witten. :P

same here, I'll take wittens upside over any back up tight end out there.

Doesn't it kill you guys benching studs, for "match up guys"?I'm pretty sure early in my FF career I got burned bad doing this, and swore never to bench a stud again. Even the best guys struggle for stretches. Teams focus on them, take them out of the offense, make someone else beat them. But in the end, you're still better off locking them in the lineup. If I missed the playoffs by benching Westbrook/Witten this week, it would eat me up for months. I also think I get emotionally attached to guys who win me $$$. LJ won me a bunch a few years back, and I never benched him for 2 years. *lol* Injuries do tend to scare me, but Witten has been so money for the last 1.5 years you couldn’t convince me to bench him. If you draft him, play him. If you're going to play WW TE matchup game all year, don't waste the pick on him. Not to call you out, this is just in general. I see guys benching studs for very average players, and it's just beyond me. I don't think I'd be physically able to bench Witten for Boss.

AHHH i benched Witten for Keller yesterday before reading this thread. I guess I feel better that there was at least some discussion on the matter. I suck.

started Witten over Zach Miller this week. Obviously, I'm happy with it. I've already clinched a playoff spot and I'm playing the first place team this week, so i decided to go for maximum upside. I'd much rather lose because of a witten two point performance than lose because i left a 20 point witten perfomance on the bench. If he's active, he's in my line up no matter what.

Although I subscribe to the start your studs theory, I disagree that it's the right thing to do all of the time. If it's a banged up Witten or some third rate option with a decent match-up, then I'm easily starting Witten. It's a different story if you have a good back-up. I've been using a combination of Dallas Clark and Keller (I know, I'm carrying three TEs) with no regrets. How many weeks did Witten put up less than a handful of points?

If either Clark or Keller don't put up a huge week, then it hurts this week, but these games are too critical to get stuck with a 2-point performance.

Witten (and Romo) has shown that he is healthy, so he's back in my starting line-up next week.

Nice job over thinking Witten guys. ALWAYS start your stud TEs.
Everyone always remembers the time they benched a stud and he went off....They never remember all the bad games that went into that benching decision. The points lost from starting a player during the bad weeks rarely offset the points missed out on by benching a player when they finally have a first good week back.Up until this week, Witten's FF points have been poor for the 4 previous Cowboy games.A much better philosophy IMO is "Always start the player YOU think will score the most this week"
