Jay Ajayi to Eagles (1 Viewer)

For what it's worth Seguro's story says Ajayi was pissed about his usage after wins too. I agree his chances of being happy should vastly improve now but this is a guy who has now clearly displayed attitude issues in each of the past two seasons. It does bear watching.
I agree. And I think this may be a big part of why Ajayi was traded. Gase never seemed to like Ajayi and that strained relationship may be a big part of why he was traded.

You had Jay as a healthy scratch and did not even travel with the team week one last year because he was upset about losing the starting job to Arian Foster last year.

Then this year in the London game vs the Saints I saw Ajayi throwing a hissy fit on the sideline because he wasn't being used on passing downs.

He has immaturity problems, did not handle losing opportunity professionally.

It’s another lost two weeks for Ajayi owners who have already struggled this year in redraft. I’m sure most will start him against Denver but it’s not a great matchup and then he gets a second bye.
Denver wasn't viewed as a good matchup for Orleans Darkwa either, so sometimes things don't work out as planned.  The key is whether Ajayi gets the requisite touches.

I think they should rest him for 2 weeks, they will need him during the (NFL) playoff stretch. This coming from an Ajayi owner

i thought Drake looked surprisingly good in those few plays. he had nice burst. that said, it was a blow out and the end of the game. it's not the best proving ground for any player.
Yeah. Drake has speed, his measurables are good as far as that goes.

He did ok with some opportunity last year before Gase admitted he was wrong and rolled with Ajayi. Drake can run and catch. He isn't terrible.

In college he had the tendency to bounce plays outside too much and as a rookie last year he was not ready for pass protection, but he may end up being decent. We really haven't seen enough of Drake yet to really judge.

Those carries at the end of the most recent game are not a good sample to judge him by though. The defense was playing soft at that point.

pass protection.  We just lost our starting LT and Ajayi is significantly better at pass pro than Blount.
They traded for better pass protection out of their 1st/2nd down back? Do we even have any data to back up the claim that Ajayi is better in pass pro than Blount? I won't pretend to be an authority on the subject, but I thought Ajayi was struggling with this aspect about one year ago.

If they dont cut a RB, one will most definitely be inactive on game days. My guess is Blount, but they may trade him for peanuts to a team like the Patriots for a conditional 2019 7th or something.

yes and no. defenses, especially those with a reputation like Baltimore's, *really* value the the shutout. If Miami had even a field goal then they would have been playing soft but they were looking not just win the game. I'm not saying that they were playing with incredible intensity but they were enjoying being in control like that.

His stats prove how bad he is. Maybe you should look at those and the results of a Dolphins team that continues to feature him and continues to lose.
You're doing a really weird job of bringing up specific stats without fact checking that end up actually working against you.

First you say his YPT is worst in NFL history when it was actually better than most of the league's elite WRs in the last season where he wasn't playing on a complete dumpster fire of a team.  Now you say the Dolphins "continue to lose" when they are 13-5 in their last 18 games.

Landry is a good slot receiver on a bad team.  His numbers are pretty good considering that.  I bought into the narrative that he was just volume garbage heading into this year but actually watching him this season (since I'm an Ajayi owner) he actually looks like a very talented player.

i wouldn't start him this week even if there wasn't Blount, Smallwood, et al in the picture to muddy it. Denver's playing tough.
Denver shut down Hunt and Gordon the last 2 weeks, and completely eliminated Elliott earlier this year. Le'Veon Bell would be a risky start against them this year.

So they are 13-5 the last 18 games but also a dumpster fire? His YPT is garbage this year. If you view Robert Woods as a good WR then I guess Landry is a good WR. I wouldn’t want my team treating Robert Woods like he’s Antonio Brown and that had happened for 3 years now with Miami. People like him because he wins them games in PPR. In real life he stagnates the offense and is a bland WR who is more compatible to an unathletic RB that can catch then a true WR. He’s a volume play, I own him in spots but let’s not make him a hero and say he should be getting what he gets.

Are people really going to pick up a Dolphin RB after what we saw the past 7 weeks? The team does not have one rushing TD from a RB this year. But by all means, hurry to scoop up a RB who might share time on the worst offense in the leagues with a stud RB, who has been shut out twice...then come back and give us advice on football with a serious tone and see if you cant even crack a smile.
In deep dynasty leagues, absolutely.

I just mean that the game was well in hand and they were playing some lighter boxes at that point keeping plays in front of them.

I agree the Ravens have pride and did not want to give up any points, and they didn't. Just saying that the situation was such that they were not playing the run as tightly by the time Drake came into the game.

Ajayi was going to face Denver with the Dolphins later this season. I'd say it's a huge plus to give him a legitimate bye which he wouldn't have gotten with Miami. So from that perspective I'm very pleased about this trade as an Ajayi owner.

He actually isn't stone handed at all. Very capable receiving RB that Miami just never used in that capacity much.

He doesn't have good yards per reception numbers as a pro, but he can catch the ball.
Hehehe... there WAS sarcasm in my parenthetical comment.... meaning that my non-parenthetical comment was also...sarcasm....  ;)

We're way off topic here so I'll leave it at this and then get back to Ajayi.

I am a Dolphins fan who owns him in zero fantasy football leagues so I have zero motivation to enjoy his volume in PPR fantasy and every motivation to be in favor of a guy that helps the Dolphins win football games, which Landry does.

And yes, this team is a dumpster fire this year and anyone can see that.  I'm not going to hold Landry's YPT (which is well below his career average) in this 7 game stretch against him any more than people think Jay Ajayi is a 3.4ypc running back because that's what he's put up this year there.  It's a miracle that he even has time to get open enough to catch a short pass this year with as bad as this line is and as inaccurate as the QBs are.

If you can just watch the guy play you can see that he's very good at what he does, which doesn't have much of a chance on this year's team.  Put this guy in the slot on New England and no one will remember who Julian Edelman was.

Anyway, all of this belongs in a Landry thread, so back to Ajayi...

That's part of the reason yes.  His pass pro is better than Blounts... Blounts is not very good at all and Smallwoods is awful.  Losing a LT, it's an added bonus to get someone in who can potentially help out there.

That's icing on the cake though... it's a pro bowl RB who had a bad year behind an atrocious OL and awful offense, for a very late 4th round pick.  This is an easy win.

As an Ajayi owner I'm actually OK with the bye.  He looks tired out there with all the volume he's gotten and he needs a rest.  With this Denver game not looking like a good matchup (and most of us probably being scared to start him there anyway) I actually kind of hope he gets limited play in that one too so he can essentially have two weeks of rest and come back fresh.

That said, I can understand how teams on the border of playoff contention are disappointed that they'll essentially be without one of their RBs for two weeks.

To be fair Ajayi did have some drops in preseason last year and there certainly were some issues in practice that caused Gase to not be excited about Ajayi as a receiving option.

I think Gase isn't a very good coach though, especially how he didn't use Ajayi as a receiver enough, which made their play calling when Ajayi was in the game too predictable and made life harder on themselves and Jay as a result of that.

I think the ball placement by the QBs is poor and didn't set Ajayi up for success as a receiver as part of the reason for his poor yards per reception numbers, but Ajayi hasn't shown to be as good a receiving option with the Dolphins as he was in college. No doubt about that.

I think the reason for that is a combination of factors and Ajayi does deserve a good part of the blame for that.

Will be interesting to see how the Eagles use him and how he does with improved QB play and likely better offensive line play as well.

and orleans freaking darkwa put up almost 100 yards...

I get it, it's not a favorable matchup, but weird things happen. My options are Abdullah or Ajayi...

He needs a second bye. And I do think DEN is a bad matchup, but if it was MIA vs DEN I'd probably still start him just because, why play the matchup game... just play your studs

Yeah Jay has had soreness in his knee and could use some rest while getting acclimated with the new team and playbook.

I think it would be best for all parties if they limit him in the upcoming Denver game.

Ajayi is RB36 in PPR. He's averaging fewer points per game than Marlon Mack, Andre Ellington, Frank Gore and Matt Forte. He's nowhere close to being a stud or an automatic weekly start.

Yes, true. However, my "start your studs" statement was directed toward where he was drafted. No one drafted him to be a RB 3. He's performing as such, but he wasn't drafted to be.

He was drafted as a stud. He hasn't performed at that level, but he has potential to. Andre Ellington isn't likely putting up 20 points any time soon. Ajayi could put that up any given week. Especially on a better offense.

Like I said, my options are Abdullah or Ajayi. Abdullah was drafted as my RB3. So obviously I'm between a rock and a hard place, but I can't imagine people who drafted Ajayi are perfectly content leaving him on their bench... because I imagine their bench is not much more attractive than Abdullah.

He also blocks well, finishes plays hard, and is a danger as a returner.  A lot of Hines Ward in how much effort he gives.  Combine that with the most receptions at this stage in his career in NFL history.  It will be a sad day when the Fins stupidly move on from him.

Ajayi was massively overrated in drafts this year. He never should've been drafted as a RB1 in my opinion and his production has born that out. Can that change now that he's on arguably the best team in the NFC? Perhaps but I still think he'll need an increased role in the passing game to reach that level and I'm not sure that's gonna happen.

Not to turn this into a WDIS thread but I'd probably go Abdullah over Ajayi this week given the brutal matchup for Ajayi and current uncertainty over his immediate role.

FWIW, you are correct about this. This is what I found:

FWIW, Jay Ajayi ranks 19th out of 44 RBs in pass protection this season by @PFF.

(Blount 33rd, Smallwood 44th) #Eagles

Still not sure how often that will come into play for a non-3rd down role, but it is at least worth noting. I'll still be surprised if Ajayi betters Blount's 4.7 ypc, though.

Eagle fan here:

There is 0% chance Blount is getting cut or traded - he will be involved still. The Eagles are very happy with him. This is more of a move for the future. This year will be the Ajayi/Blount show. Next year expect Ajayi to be the every down back.

When I watched the game this past week the commentators were talking about how much Wentz has been hit. This makes perfect sense.

As a Cowboys fan I absolutely hate this move.

As a owner of Wentz and Jay I love this move.

Combine the two it’s the reason being a fan and being a owner is a love/hate relationship.

Why would he not get an increased role in the passing game?  Philly needs a pass catching back and since Sproles went out, they didn't have one.  This opens up all kind of new options for Doug and that offense.

Landry is a very good player. He has very good hands, catches everything. A bit limited as far as his speed, but he is all grit and polish, fights hard and earns every yard he gets. Great football player in my opinion.

The ajayi thread wasn’t good enough for this?  I kept checking his thread and no discussion only to find this one.

Anywho, not sure if this makes ajayi reach his potential this year hutnits definitely an upgrade over the Miami dumpster fire.

Eagles have been passing a lot even on first and 2nd down... it isn't a traditional 3rd down offense.  Pass Pro will be important on 1st and 2nd downs too.  And even if it is on 3rd downs, it's still a plus.  Carson has been taking WAY too many hits and I think that played a huge part in this.  We have more protection for him now, on TOP of a potentially elite 3 down back, who can catch passes like no RB we currently have.

Blount's 4.7 is inflated.  He has good spurts for sure, and a good YPC but is a 12-16 carry/week type of back (Every game this year he's been between those numbers).  Getting into the gruelling part of the season, I love for him to keep about 8 carries per game to Ajayi's 20.

He hasn't shown much as a receiver despite a clear need for more passing game weapons in Miami. Could've been poor coaching. We'll see. I'm a big Pederson fan so if he thinks Ajayi can be useful he'll get receptions. I would be thrilled if it happened. I'm just not gonna bank on it.

I am a huge fan of Ajayi and have been for a long time, but he was drafted too high in my opinion this year, which is somewhat understandable based on what he did last year.

I don't have Ajayi in any leagues this year because the price was too high. Still think he is a great player though. Hopefully the Eagles can make better use of him than Miami did.

You know this better than anyone, last year and this year there was countless postings in his thread about how he was under-utilized and not used well enough. Factor in that the OL was terrible, I believe he was averaging behind the LOS for first contact. I think he's very talented and has the ability to do well in an offense that will use him fully and block fairly well. PHI offers some significant promise. Is he a RB1? No, I think you're right, he was over-drafted and likely should never be in the RB1 conversation. However, he should be a high end RB2, especially on the eagles

Ya but again you're using Miami's offense as the standard.  You can't say "he's rb 36 he's not very good".  He was rb36 behind a bottom 5 Oline (now goes to a top 10 Oline), a bottom 5 offense (now goes to a top 5 offense), etc.  His TD's should go up, as well as receptions and yards even if he isn't featured.

Blount should still seee 8ish carries a game though so I think Ajayi is limited to about 20 carries a game.

he had 50 receptions his final year at Boise State. Career 10.6 YPR in college. This was the biggest puzzle in the last year and a half in MIA... they don't use him in the passing game in spite of his success in college catching the ball.

Everyone says James White catches the ball very well, and did so in college... his final year he had 39 receptions.
Darren Sproles is the epitome of a receiving RB... his best year in college was his final year and he had 32 receptions.

I've talked about Ajayi plenty in his thread dating back to last season. Not gonna rehash it all here. I agree his situation has improved considerably in terms of the new team he's on. I am concerned about the split between him and Blount (although Caplan's Tweet lessens that for me) and whether his role will increase in the passing game. As I said, I'm hoping it does but I'm not gonna bank on it. Based on what I've seen from Ajayi in the NFL as a receiver he hasn't shown much. Perhaps with a really good QB, something he's never had, that will change. I hope it does.

So, if we break this down properly then we should not worry too much about blount other than culturing short yardage and gl carries.

If they were so happy with blount and Smallwood, why give away a 4th RD pick for another Rb?  Why not try to acquire another area of need with that pick?

I think they traded for ajayi to play ajayi.  Blount is on a tiny 1 year contract.  They have very little invested in him and he’s old for a Rb.  He’s done well INC spurts this year but ajayi is a more complete back in the prime of his career.  Smallwood sucks.

I don't think I've ever heard Blount called a 12-16 carry back. If anyone was ever built to carry 20+ times per week, it's Blount.

Again, I own him nowhere, but think he's criminally undervalued so from a football fan perspective, I don't see Ajayi has a big improvement. But he's got a year left on his rookie deal and it only cost a 4th so I don't think it's a bad trade. Gives them a lot of depth at a position with the highest turnover.

Again, most are calling it a steal.

Blount's role was to come in as a bruiser... he can finally be used in this role.

Blount a 20+ carry back????   Blount has carried the ball over 20 times in just 11 of his 108 career games.

If Caplan hadn't sent out his Tweet earlier today I'd be more concerned about this from an Ajayi perspective. But Caplan is really dialed into the Eagles. I think it's a near mortal lock the info he got came from the coaching staff.

ETA - Blount starting this week with Ajayi having a minor role and then coming out in Week 11 as the starter after the bye does make a ton of sense as I said earlier.

Eagles VP of Football Operations Howie Roseman said LeGarrette Blount remains the team's starting running back, even after acquiring Jay Ajayi from the Dolphins on Tuesday.

We're not really buying it, though it's possible Ajayi could take a backseat to Blount in Week 9 as he learns the Eagles' offense. Roseman said the team liked what it saw from Ajayi in joint practices with the Dolphins this summer and despite rumblings of a knee issue, the Eagles did not find any red flags after going through his medical records. Ajayi has been largely unproductive this year but should benefit from a change of scenery behind a better offensive line in Philadelphia. It wouldn't be a surprise if he took over the lead role from Blount following the team's bye in Week 10.
Yep what Packersfan said.

This week i'd buy that he's not the starting rb, but likely will have a package set of plays.. But as others have said, after bye the job is his.
