It's expected to be the signing of free agent QB Jeff Garcia.

It's a done deal. Bumping up Calvin Johnson's number's.125-1810 18 TD's.
You must be assuming that Garcia has the starting QB role in TB all season. He has to beat out Chris Simms first. I don't see Chucky having Garcia starting Game #1, I think it'll be like last year, Garcia gets into the game once the #1 QB gets injured.Christopher

Sure Gruden will start Garcia in game 1. Why wouldn't he? He's never been that high on Simms anyway. Tampa Bay didn't go out to get Garcia to sit the bench.

Even if he isn't that high on Simms, having Garcia start the entire season does nothing to develop either Simms or Gradkowski given that they've both started games. I think at this point, the development of Simms or Gradkowski continues with them playing games rather than watching Garcia. Garcia is not the Bucs QB of the future, nor their leader to a championship.

Gruden is out to save his damn job in 2007. His head rolls with a repeat performance. Garcia is the week 1 starter, bank on it.

Wait a minute. We had a link to a story nonetheless or report that Garcia went to the Raiders...I don't understand. The next time someone screams about a link, I am going to link this thread. The report said it was a done deal...OOPS!

And now Jake Plummer has, in fact, been traded to the Bucs, too according to breaking news on ESPN.

Plummer vs. Garcia vs. Simms...in a cage match. :lmao:

In a move that can only be described as bizarre, the press release announcing the acquisition of defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson by the Broncos also states that quarterback Jake Plummer has been traded to Tampa for a conditional pick in the 2008 draft.

The release, which was forwarded to us by Adam Caplan of Scout.com, says: "The Denver Broncos on Saturday traded quarterback Jake Plummer to Tampa Bay in exchange for a conditional selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Denver also acquired defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from Miami in exchange for the Broncos' own sixth round pick (24th in round) in the 2007 NFL Draft."

Apparently, the Bucs have opted to squat on Plummer's rights. If he truly retires, the Broncos would likely get nothing. If Plummer decides not to quit, then the Broncos get a pick in 2008 based on, potentially, Plummer's playing time or performance.

So, as a practical matter, the Bucs now have Plummer, Jeff Garcia, and Chris Simms under contract.

And if Plummer follows through on his apparent plan to retire, the Bucs will have the ability to recoup the remainder of any unallocated signing bonus money from Plummer, even though Tampa didn't pay out the bonus.

Seems like it's a done-deal:

Jeff Garcia-QB-Buccaneers Mar. 3 - 12:41 pm et

Bucs signed QB Jeff Garcia to an undisclosed contract.

Terms haven't been disclosed, but Garcia was looking for roughly $5 million-per-year. We'd guess that Garcia will make more money than Chris Simms in 2007, which should give him the slight edge to be the Bucs' starter. Garcia and Jon Gruden have long been mutual admirers and Garcia has enjoyed most of his success in a West Coast offense, so it's possible he'll be a top-20 fantasy QB. The signing makes it more likely Tampa will target Calvin Johnson or defensive help in the draft.

If Plummer is traded to the Bucs also (meaning he doesn't retire), then I take back the guarantee that Garcia is the week 1 starter. One thing I believe is true for sure is that Chris Simms will not be the opening day starter.

Simms might even be cut at some point. If Garcia can command the offense well...Simms signed a 1 year deal, not much bonus in it, Bucs could scoot him out with little to no cap hit I would think.

I dunno, I think Garcia is still the clear-cut starter week 1. How long will Chucky put up with Plummers bad reads and INT's?? Garcia is the closest thing to Gruden's idea of an ideal QB since Rich Gannon. I also think the Bucs have a better shot at making the playoff's under Garcia than under the other 2 (which they will in the weak NFC) . But given Garcia's age, it's a nice luxuray to go to Plummer for a game or two.

I like that, for once, an ownership group is challenging a player to put up or shut up. I'm sure Plummer thought all that noise about his retirement would ultimately lead to the Broncos releasing him which, of course, would allow Plummer to pick his own destination.

The fact that the Bucs are willing to call his bluff is great stuff. Personally I hope he does retire, because for as good as Garcia was for my Birds last year, I'm a lot less frightened of what Gruden can get out of Garcia than I would be Plummer.

I'm guessing that Plummer is going to end up being traded to Houston.
 I think Tampa may be trying to force Oakland to take a QB by controlling all the FA QB's.

Hou wants Plummer, but now the Buc's are going to hold him hostage so they don't move Carr yet. :wall:

Who is in the running for Carr? Possibly Cle. & Oak.? 2 teams that the Buc's want to draft a QB.

Denver gets a conditional pick instead of a 4th for plummer? And plummer has to not retire AND perform to earn that pick?

I'm guessing that Houston may not have wanted Plummer that bad or didn't have much to offer. Otherwise why would denver agree to the conditional instead of trading directly with Houston?

No way does Simms start over Garcia week one. Garcia is a poor man's Rich Gannon and will fit in well with Gruden's short passing offense.

I've heard mention that starting Garcia doesn't help the development of Simms or Gradkowski. Why would Gruden care about that this season? The pressure is on Gruden to make the playoffs this year, or his job could very well be in jeopardy. Garcia gives TB the best shot at winning this year.

I am surprised no one mentioned this: if Garcia wins the starting job, I think this is a nice bump for Carnell Williams. Williams' numbers were killed by poor QB play last season, and a legitimate passer will make Williams a much more dangerous RB.

Yeah he should have, but IMO plummer and Garcia are better then Griese.
For damn sure.
When Brian Griese left Denver he took with him the Broncos ALL-TIME QB passer rating. When Brian Griese left Tampa Bay he took with him the Bucs ALL-TIME QB passer rating.I like Plummer and Garcia but Brian Griese has performed better than many realize.
It may be that Chucky prefers a Qb who is more mobile than Griese is. That is the only thing I see Garcia and Plummer offering that may be considered better than what Griese offered. That and Griese had a bit of damaged confidence having been the replacement for Elway and being injured after moving on to Miami and Tampa.

A little :lmao: but I like it.Anything is possible when Jon Gruden and Al Davis are involved.
IMHO, Garcia just visited Oakland so it wouldn't look like tampering. He was coming here all along.
tampering?
It obviouslly goes on. :) I am willing to bet Gruden was probably talking to Garcia as early as December about being a Buc. You already know this if you read PR, but he has visited Tampa several times, and it always comes out that everyone is great "friends".

GARCIA ASKED RAIDERS NOT TO DRAFT QUARTERBACK

We threw it out there last night as a possible explanation for the impasse between the Raiders and free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia. And we've now learned that, for a change, our closed-eyed wing-and-a-pray guess was on the mark.

We're told that quarterback Jeff Garcia didn't sign with the Raiders for one reason and one reason only -- the team would not give him an assurance that a quarterback would not be selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft.

It's really not an unreasonable request. Who would ever want to be the lame duck starting quarterback? If the Raiders were to struggle to start the season, the denizens of the Black Hole soon would have been chanting for the other guy.

It's also our understanding that the money in Oakland was equal to the money that Garcia is getting from the Bucs. We're told that Garcia will make $5 million in 2007, and that the total value over two years could be as much as $14.5 million, based on Garcia being the starter and the team making the playoffs.

For now, though, it's an open competition between Simms and Garcia, especially since the base value of their deals is identical. Indeed, we're told that Garcia has not been promised the starting job.

Of course, if he ends up being starter, his situation won't be much different in Tampa than it would have been in Oakland. The backup quarterback (as Garcia learned in Philly) is often the most popular guy in town.

BUCS TO SHIP PLUMMER TO RAIDERS?

There's speculation in league circles that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will eventually trade quarterback Jake Plummer to the Oakland Raiders.

The thinking is that the Raiders are interested in acquiring Plummer as a short-term starter while expected No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell gets ready to play, but that there's no way that the Raiders and Broncos ever could have done business together.

Enter the Bucs, who could end up being the straw man for a deal that puts Plummer in silver and black.

Stay tuned.
Denver would never talk trade with Oakland. Too much bad blood between Shanahan and Davis. Could Gruden still be in contact with the raiders, and is working to make a deal happen here?

interesting. what's his value, a fourth-rounder I guess? a fourth to tampa from oakland and then they send a sixth to denver?

God loves me after all. I'm going to church tomorrow.

BTW..."Per Schefter, the trade states that Plummer either unretires and plays for the Bucs, or Plummer retires and the Broncos retain the ability to pursue the unallocated portion of his signing bonus. "

Whats the over/under that he'll retire during the run back when Champ picks him off ? :bye:

I have no clue to the answer, but it might make a good trivia question.....How many QBs hold the all time QB passer rating for 2 or more teams?

I do not want any of the QBs primarily mentioned in this thread based on the teams they will be playing for. JMO. :goodposting:
