How is there no thread on this? What a horrible question to ask. Dude should be fired IMO. Completely unacceptable

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized to Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick Dez Bryant on Tuesday for asking whether his mother was a prostitute during a pre-draft visit.David Wells, Bryant's advisor, told ESPNDallas.com on Tuesday that the former Oklahoma State wide receiver was asked about his mother during a visit to the Dolphins before the NFL draft in March, as reported by Yahoo! Sports last week.On Tuesday, Yahoo! Sports revealed that Ireland who asked the question to Bryant.Wells and Bryant declined further comment."My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I'm considering drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions," Ireland said Tuesday in a statement released by the Dolphins. "Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him."Ireland received permission from the Cowboys front office to speak with Bryant on Tuesday.Yahoo! Sports reported last wek that during one of his pre-draft visits, Bryant was asked by a high-level executive of one NFL franchise -- during a extensive conversation about Bryant's past -- whether his mother, Angela, was a prostitute."No, my mom is not a prostitute," Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. "I got mad -- really mad -- but I didn't show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them."The background of Bryant and his mother -- including her lifestyle and past legal troubles -- were widely reported prior to the draft. Angela was only 15 when Dez was born, and she served time in jail for selling crack cocaine.

Why? You don't think a CB would go there. Needs to get used to hearing comments like this. A pissed off WR doesn't always make a thinking WR.

I'm guessing he was just testing his reaction to see how he handled it. Relax. You don't think opposing fans or opposing teams are gonna trash talk Bryant?

I doubt he was looking to "score". Just wanted to get an idea of total family income and how he would handle success. If she was part of the Heidi Fleiss troupe, he is used to the "better things" and should not be a concern for someone getting a ton of money and going out of control.

P.S. Typical Dolphin...

If someone asked that on a regular job interview it would be grounds for dismissal. Theres just some questions you dont ask.

Pretty sure playing in the NFL isn't a regular job.

Wow, that is way over the line. The sad part is, if Bryant had done what he should have done he would have been disciplined severely for laying out an exec. Jeff Ireland should have been fired on the spot. I honestly can't believe that people in here are condoning the behavior. You just don't talk about someone's mother in that light. Ever.

This/thread
Very inappropriate question IMO. And what would his reaction really indicate to Miami? He can bite his tounge when money is on the line? What about after his payday? There was no point to that....

It's this line of thinking that contributed to the ####ification of America. If this keeps up, in another twenty years, the NFL is going to stand for the Nerf Football League. If I'm going to potentially pay you twenty million dollars, I want to know if asking if your mother is a whore is going to make you snap... And if it is, I ain't drafting you.

These kinds of questions are common. Well, maybe not this specific one, but I've read that throwing hard questions likely to piss off the prospect is pretty common. They just want to see how they react, what kind of person he is.

This one's obviously a little rude, but it's not like this guy is in the media, he asked him a question in a private interview to try and get a rise out of him to see how he reacts.

Did he ask the same question to other prospects to "test their reactions"?
Usually there has to be some basis for a question to get a real reaction.

I think that part is key here. Being asked on national TV after being selected would be a whole different ballgame.

So what. He asked if she was a prostitute he did not accuse her of being one.

Was listening to Norm Hitzges on The Ticket yesterday. For those of you who don't know he's a long time Dallas area radio guy. He was saying that Dallas got a talented player in Dez he also alluded to the fact Bryant went through a lot of crazy things as a kid the result of which has rendered him on the same mental level as a 13 year old. Norm is not really a vindictive kind of guy and he'd not say these kinds of things without some type of knowledge. So my point is maybe Ireland had a few reasons to ask the question like he wanted to know what kind of stuff did Dez really undergo as a child.

Oh BS. One of the dumbest postings I've ever seen around here...and I've seen a lot.Totally inappropriate and offensive question.

Dude, you're crazier than your avatar.

I don't see the problem with the question. We're talking about someone that was crackhead. Prostitution is extremely common among crackheads.

A lot of guys in here with a low opinion of their mothers I guess. The question serves zero purpose.

Actually, what went down is the ####ification of America. Back in the day, Ireland would have been swung on.

They were talking about this on the radio here in KC this afternoon.

There were other ridiculous ones that were asked to other players from other GMs/Coaches as well.

- One GM asked a player if he wore a thong.

- Another had Weatherspoon sing.

- Someone asked a player if they were on a bus and Brian Orakpo wanted his seat, would he give it up or want to fight.

Some of these are just stupid. How do they expect people to answer these things? I'd look at them as if they were stupid. Wonder if that would get me drafted?

Defensive players are going to say worse things to him on the field. I don't see any problem with trying to find out if he is going to overreact and commit a penalty if someone trash talks in an offensive way. This kind of thing goes on every year and with most teams.

If Dez punched him in the face, would that be the response they were looking for? Because frankly, that is the only way to respond to such a question.

This is what he should say to the referee when opponents say it on the field.

I have no problem with trying to trip a guy up in the interview process but this was over the line. Also, it doesn't tell you squat about what a guy is going to do on the field after he has signed his contract. It is a pointless question and it is out of bounds. The more I think about it, it is just downright stupid.

I see your point. He should be offended. How dare he get asked that question? A whore? Come on. Now, a crackhead? Sure. Did jail time? Of course. But crack and whoring? They don't go together at all. Never. So if someone understands why that question would be asked, obviously they have "a low opinion of their mothers." Because that somehow relates to their own mothers, who have never done crack or been in jail.Your conclusion is spot on.

It's not your fault.

It's not my fault that I see your point? :yucky:

I am suprised by peolple in this thread. The question should not have been asked. There are other questions that he could of ask to gauge his reacation (if that was his purpose). I am sure Ireland did not ask Tebow if his mother was a prostitute.

Considering that Jeff Ireland called and apologized, I think he realizes that it was a poor question. Those of you that were defending it should really take a second look at yourselves. You might be a jerk.

Tim Tebow's mother did not give birth to him at age 15 and serve time for crack cocaine.

Shouldn't this guy and the team get fined by the league for conduct detrimental to the league? What kind of business thinks this is "normal"? This is the kind of hypocrisy that bugs me because there will be no official punishment for this.

I don't see a big issue with asking the question IF Ireland asked the same question to every single player he interviewed. However, I suspect that isn't the case.
