Jeff Ireland asks Dez Bryant if his mom is a prostitute (1 Viewer)

Considering that Jeff Ireland called and apologized, I think he realizes that it was a poor question. Those of you that were defending it should really take a second look at yourselves. You might be a jerk.
He called and apologized because it became public. I'm sure he felt there was a good reason to ask Bryant the dreaded question. We'll never know the true story, hence why I'm not up in arms over it.

It's this line of thinking that contributed to the ####ification of America. If this keeps up, in another twenty years, the NFL is going to stand for the Nerf Football League. If I'm going to potentially pay you twenty million dollars, I want to know if asking if your mother is a whore is going to make you snap... And if it is, I ain't drafting you.
:goodposting: WE NEED REAL TOUGH GUYS!

Wow, that is way over the line. The sad part is, if Bryant had done what he should have done he would have been disciplined severely for laying out an exec. Jeff Ireland should have been fired on the spot. I honestly can't believe that people in here are condoning the behavior. You just don't talk about someone's mother in that light. Ever.

Well if you want to ask a question like that be prepared to get your ### kicked free of charge.

You should then be prepared to lose millions of dollars because nobody is going to draft you if you can't take being asked a question without resorting to violence.

If a complete stranger walks up to you with that question, then yes. If you're a draftee in the NFL who's expecting unusual questions from GM's then you do what Bryant did and just answer it in a calm manner.

Your postings suggest you had an impoverished intellectual background. Was your mom a whore or something?TIA,Jeff Ireland

I am suprised by peolple in this thread. The question should not have been asked. There are out questions that he could of ask to gauge his reacation (if that was his purpose). I am sure Ireland did not ask Tebow if his mother was a prostitute.
There were a lot of interesting posts in this thread but Donny lands the plane here. I'm kind of ashamed that Ireland did this and it speaks to his immaturity. He has a long way to go if he is Parcell's next of kin for Miami when Billy Boy leaves town. The question should have been answered with a straight forward "I'm not gonna dignify that question with a response...and if there are no other questions I'd like to leave."Then Roger Goodell should make sure that these blue chippers have his cell # on speed dial so he can be alerted to this crapfest and enforce discipline. If we are going to hold Big Ben responsible for conducting himself like a gentleman than at the place of business where everyone actually works, there shouldn't be anything like this going on. This is actually harrassment and if I were Dez Bryant I might see what legal grounds there are to pursue the matter. If not Dez Bryant, perhaps the Cowboys need to lead the investigation on this. I think there should be a ground movement on this starting with the fans in Miami. Ireland has done a few questionable things since being here in Miami, and I'm not sold he is ready to hold the title he has now.

1st home opener the fan that can get a sign in the stadium with this..."Jeff Ireland, was your mother a prostitute?" should be awarded at least a bucket of suds for this.

When you are investing millions of dollars there is no questions that are out of line.
Strongly disagree.Just curious, Dez, how often do you masturbate? Any tips on some good websites you frequent?

Yeah, I suppose there are some questions that are stupid and out of line.

Yes because it is easier to be a jerk in private. What is the saying? Character is what we display when no one else is around?

When you are investing millions of dollars there is no questions that are out of line.
Sure there are. Are you a muslim? Is your mother african american? etc.

All of these questions can get you sued. Asking if your mother is a prostitue just makes you a jerk.

I highly doubt that because I guarantee you some team would have loved his display of fierce loyalty to family.

I think Ireland's personal conduct was very questionable but something tells me a certain commish won't see it that way.

Then that guy isn't going to be able to handle the trash-talking on the field. And if they deck someone in an interview...welcome to the CFL. Blount punched someone after a game and didn't get drafted. The NFL isn't a normal company and this wasn't a normal interview. But if you want to play hypotheticals, it would make sense to know what illegal activity his mother is into. A prostitute crack-user might have some bad connections who might want to use her son for unlawful gains.Let me take it a step further. Suppose you suspected the family had organized crime ties. Would that be an appropriate question for a professional sports franchise? Would the player be commended for punching the person who asked that question? The guy apologized because it looks bad and PR is more important to the NFL than anything. But when teams are investing millions and their jobs are on the line based on whether draft picks pan out or not, they're going to be very, very thorough in their questioning. Maybe it's over the line, but they're looking for any indication someone is or isn't going to work out. That's the business of the NFL.

Please, trash talking on the field is a totally different ball game. It's much different coming from a suit & tie that has authority over you vs. peers. I will also add that it doesn't matter if your mother is a crackhead or a lawyer, the player will ultimately make his own decisions. If you're hung up on it, assume the worst and leave the man his dignity. He had no choice how he was brought into this world so deal with it one way or the other.

This is yet another example of the NFL, with the support of all too many of its fans, thinking that the usual rules don't apply because of the high salaries paid to its employees. The league could use a good dose of humility now and then. Or a kick in the pants.

Does anyone know every question asked at these interviews? I have a real hard time believing this is the only questionable question ever asked to a prospect.

Just my :goodposting: but the only real story is how Dez reacted. He seems to have reacted well which IMO is a positive sign for his future.

It's not the amount of money paid that makes these questions "more okay" than in the normal workforce, it's that they live in the public eye 24/7 and teams need to protect their investment - which includes their public image. Of course, the Dolphins organization will be seen by some in a lesser light now so it may have been a mistake from that perspective.

When you are investing millions of dollars there is no questions that are out of line.
I totally disagree. This is getting blown out of proportion. However, I am happy to see that Ireland apologized, but I do wonder if he would have, if the story had not hit the public.

That's funny. I was just thinking that an NFL where teams don't want players to get mad about anything is a sign of the ####ification of the league. If a Steelers GM asked Jack Lambert that, I'd guess the GM would be in the hospital and the public would've applauded Lambert for defending his mother's honor.

I agree with this. Bryant would have been justified walking out of the interview. Hell, he would have been justified ##### slapping Ireland in my book. Ireland is a tool for this move. Unbelievable. I agree that it is a shame that in this day and age you can ask someone if their mom is a whore, and they can't do anything. What a shame. And Ireland was only able to say that because of the apparatus of the NFL. If Dez even threatens him at all by even standing up quickly or anything, Ireland smears him to anyone who will listen. I hate people like that and hope he gets canned.

How is there no thread on this? What a horrible question to ask. Dude should be fired IMO. Completely unacceptable
Why? You don't think a CB would go there. Needs to get used to hearing comments like this. A pissed off WR doesn't always make a thinking WR.
If someone asked that on a regular job interview it would be grounds for dismissal. Theres just some questions you dont ask.
When's the last time you had to give a 40 time or bench press during your interview process for a job that will pay you millions of dollars per year? What might happen in your interviews really doesn't have anything to do with what should happen in an NFL interview. He was being questioned about his background and there's some troubling stuff there...and I'm sure that his reaction to that question was what was being tested.I give him credit and it actually diminishes some of my concerns about him. He handled it well...so far anyway.

If he only apologized because the story became public, what was the point in apologizing at all since that type of apology would be more about his reputation than over any real sense of remorse he might have felt.

No way I hire a guy that just rolls over when I suggest that his mother is a whore.
What if she is?I can't believe a Roadhouse reference is coming to mind. And he didn't suggest that she is, he asked. There's a certain amount of that type of thing that goes hand in hand with the drug trade. You think "crack whore" was coined out of thin air?

This is what background checks are for. The only reason he asked the question was to get a reaction, he could have done that without being a total dirtbag but failed miserably.

Even the almighty NFL has its limits and in this case Ireland exceeded them.

Interesting that this is what's making the news about the interview questions and not the questions asked to Toby Gerhart. These were mentioned on the radio the other day.

"Do you feel entitled to something because you were successful as a white running back?"

"Do you feel pressure to do well for all the other white running backs out there?"

Now, replace 'white running back' with 'black quarterback' and imagine the ####storm that would have brought forth.

No way I hire a guy that just rolls over when I suggest that his mother is a whore.
I agree. The question should not have been asked in the first place, but once it has if the player just rolls over he's not the kind of guy I'd want on my team. I'm not saying I'd want him if he lost it and jacked the guy either, that too would be a mistake. But that question is clearly out of bounds and should not be tolerated by the player or the League.

"Is your mom a prostitute?"

"Is your wife a widow? Ask that question again and find out if your answer changes."

Why has no one taken into account that maybe the question wasn't worded "is your mom a prostitute"? Sure that may have been the gist of it, but maybe he asked "Hey Dez, I know that when you were a kid, your mom was involved in drugs and prostitution. Do you think she's still doing those same things today?"

I have a hard time believing any GM would just come out and ask if your mom's a whore.

People sure are quick to judge without having the whole story.

ETA: I don't think he should have entered that line of questioning knowing how sensitive a subject it must be. Personally, I would have avoided it, knowing how potentially offensive it could be.

The question was unnecessary and should not have been asked

Everyone already knows that his mother was a drug user and was convicted of drug trafficking

Knowing those two things is adding prostitute to her resume going to make a difference in how someone views this kids family background? Is his mom being a prostitute the deal breaker? “Oh Dez we were alright with your mom being a crack addict and drug dealer but now we know she is a prostitute too …well THAT is just too much we can't draft you”

Please share the appropriate wording for asking someone if their mom was/is a hooker.

IMO the question was asked to see what sort of response they got from him. Can he control his temper? Is he a loose cannon? He'll hear much worse from his opponents on game day.Ridiculous story and completely overblown.

It was included.
Oh that was it?
"Hey Dez, I know that when you were a kid, your mom was involved in drugs and prostitution. Do you think she's still doing those same things today?"
So in your version you don't ask if she was a prostitute, you call her one and ask if she still does it? I actually think that is less appropriate then just asking.

We understand you had a difficult childhood. What kind of man are you today as a result of having to overcome personal challenges in your family and childhood?]The question that was asked is completely out of line and quite possibly illegal. He should be fined at a minimum for embarrassing the league and the team under the leagues conduct policy.

Which is why I would have avoided it personally. I'm just giving an example that the question may have been worded completely different than "is/was your mom a prostitute."

Out of line, sure. I'm not sure how it's illegal, embarasses the league, or violates any policy though. I think there is too much being read into this story.

What a bunch of pansies we have in here...get over it.And for the record supposedly Dez is none to happy with his mothers sexual preference from quotes in the Dallas newspaper

That's how they worked through Angela's change in sexual orientation. Dez was in high school when he learned his mother was no longer interested in romantic relationships with men."I didn't like it. Really, I still don't," he said. "I dealt with it and now I'm comfortable with it."
So discussing his mother in a sexual content doesn't really seem too offensive to him.

Stupid stupid thing to do and say to Dez Bryant...

He could've done something different to get that sort of reaction, but what if Dez had hopped up and punched him in the face. What would be our reaction now. We still would call Ireland a #####, but Dez would get in serious trouble. So a DB says something horrible to him...and Dez goes off and punches. 15yd penalty...and possible ejection. I think Dez looks a LOT better after this.

Ireland would be fired if he worked for me, but I would've wanted him to push in a similar manner during the interview to get a reaction. Tough thing to do if we're now #####footing around with what is acceptable and unacceptable.

Tough job.

If he chooses to discuss it with the media, its his right and it would lead to zero job related repercussions. Not the same at all when you're asked about it in such a blunt way knowing the person whose asking it is someone who can influence you're future employment opportunities. Thats why there are laws about conduct during a job interview and should Bryant decide he wants to test the legal system, the NFL might find out how those laws apply to these pre draft interviews.

I think it should be standard practice to open all job interviews with "So your mother is a whore? What is that all about?" from now on. It really shows how classy you are and is definitely a strong tool in finding your next employee.

I'm going to have to go ahead and say there were no laws broken in that interview. And if Dez wants to "test the legal system" to find out, Dez will probably be working as a dealer for his mother before he knows it.
