Jen Psaki appreciation thread (1 Viewer)

She's been good so far in the limited time I've seen her. I expect softball questions in the beginning but we'll see how she handles tougher times. I would have no problem with 4 years of boring.

It will be.  Thankfully the press will be much less agressive with Jen as we have seen already. That is OK with me.

She also looks good because we are comparing her to Trumps last 4 press secretaries.

The only one that was OK was Stephanie Grisham.

Oh I don`t know.   Just know I like the media being less hostile and agressive.  Before you could see the hate in their eyes and feel it.   Now it is easier to watch.

Probably so...as I am less hostile to people who are less hostile to me.  Seems a reaction to how they are being treated by the administration.

Really popped in because her last name just reminded me of a girl I knew long ago whose last name also started with Ps.  *sigh* :tips40:

Where to start

It is amazing hearing her stand and take questions.

She's... competent.  That shouldn't be the bar but here we are.

She takes questions and doesn't fight with the media but she is not pushover either. Loved this https://i.redd.it/qzg90dhy9yc61.jpg

That look is amazing.

And if she doesn't know she just... says so... and comes back to it?

And that hair. As the kids today say it is fire.  I had no idea the cause of smart red headed women needed advancing but she has done more for it in three days than anyone I can remember.

Share your favorite Jen Psaki moments here.
Wait, she has hair?

Short interview with her on the back end of the latest Pod Save America podcast.

"White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki talks to Tommy about being back in the briefing room and the first week of the Biden Administration."

Sounds like they had worked together some in the Obama White House.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki struggled to explain Monday why President Joe Biden’s travel ban on South Africa was not “xenophobic” — which is how then-candidate Biden described President Donald Trump’s ban on China last year.

Muslims are an ethnic group. There is a term "Islamophobia" which would probably be more appropriate to be used in this context.

The Muslim ban started in beginning of 2017 and had nothing to do with the pandemic. It was about national security and (perceived risk of/threat of) terrorism. Doocy didn't ask about the Muslim ban.

Clearly Biden put Psaki in a box on this one. She can't use media spin on something that is clearly hypocritical. She was not well prepared for this question. And it's one that anyone with any experience in PR/Crisis Management could see coming a mile away. Notice her tone, body language and cadence. Observe her increased rate of speech. Poor use of timing. Did not control the narrative. Lack of dominant eye contact. Weak posture. Psaki has no excuses. She has time, resources and a full staff. She also has nearly the entire MSM leaning her bosses way with a massive number of softballs.

You are supposed to hit slow fat pitches down the middle of the plate. You are also expected to hit an average curveball too.

Let's see if she gets better. I liked McEnany better by far.

VIDEO: Psaki caught on hot mic calling her own statement ridiculous •Dec 6, 2014

https://www.rt.com/usa/211871-psaki-hot-mic-egypt/

( AP journalist Matt Lee asked then US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki to comment on the Egyptian (judicial system's) decision to legally acquit former President Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted from power in a 2011 revolution, of murdering 239 protesters who rose up against his regime. The US, at the time, supplied Egypt with over one billion dollars in aid annually and (made it a specific point to) steer completely clear of criticizing Egyptian policy. Mubarak’s acquittal (incited) hundreds of demonstrators (to protest in) Tahrir Square. )

".....(Psaki).....'Generally (speaking), we will continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of (clear) accountability..... will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability.... and (also it's) economic growth depends'.....”

"....(Lee)...'What does that (non statement) mean?'....'I don’t understand that (statement) at all....What you (just) said says nothing'......"

“...(Psaki on hot mic after press conference ends) ....'That Egypt (prewritten) line is ridiculous'......”

*****

Psaki reads a canned statement but is not prepared for the inevitable and predictable questions that follow. Strategically she placed the statement at the end of the press conference, hoping to avoid invasive questioning by prompting a possible exit. However this violates basic understanding of primacy/latency, which is the widely accepted understanding that people will tend to remember the first things and last things said to them in a mass of information. Psaki is not at fault for being a mouthpiece for her administration. They make the rules and decisions, but she has to spin it to shovel it down the public's throat so it doesn't taste so bad. It is her fault for ignoring basic primacy/latency reality in PR/Crisis Management.

Part of dealing with the press is building relationships with allies and neutralizing your clear opposition before you even walk to the podium. Horse trade something for the kind of softball you want, control that narrative, then move on. Or deep dive/hard vet the established press corps to leverage them out of opposing you. Only a small part of the game is in front of the camera. Psaki fails here again because she repeats THREE TIMES that she will outright refuse to answer any questions. You can't speak to "accountability" when the US is sending a billion dollars a year to a place where people are slaughtered for protesting. Then doubling down and speaking to economic growth just makes it a money issue. It's tantamount to just saying it's all blood money, going in and going out. You take a bad situation and you make it worse. That should get you fired.

If the "Egypt" line was ridiculous, don't use it. Your job is to control the narrative and handle actual media spin control.

Immediate flaw in Psaki's technique is she's speaking to the reporters in the room and NOT the audience viewing from their homes. That's a failure of basic PR 101.

Is this the point where someone here reiterates they think she's awesome because they have a thing for gingers and love the idea of trying to climb into a red head's yoga pants? Are some people really that thirsty that they need to simp over a Press Secretary who can't handle PR 101?

Maybe she gets better at this. I honestly doubt it.

VIDEO: Matt Lee Destroys Jen Psaki on Obama Admin Transparency •Jul 2, 2013

State Department Briefing July 4, 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_mNnwNpIoM

Psaki shows another failure here. You don't say you don't have an answer. It's not a position of strength. That's even worse that pure 100 percent deflection. Saying transparency is not relevant within a question about actual transparency is horrible optics.

There are teenagers in high school debate teams that understand you can't say you don't have an answer. You say you'll follow up. Of course, Psaki can't follow up since she allowed a reporter to frame the narrative on her and corner her. Same guy over and over again. She should have leveraged him a long time ago to neutralize him by means of his publication/employer/brand.

People don't like liars, but they despise weakness even more.

VIDEO: State Department Announces New "Long-standing" Policy Against Backing Coups •Mar 11, 2015

After Venezuela accused the United States of plotting another coup, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki rejected the claim as "ludicrous." She said, "As a matter of long-standing policy, the United States does not support political transitions by non-constitutional means." The response from reporters may surprise you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frO1T3vZNrA

*****

Psaki makes several mistakes here. First, she's reading from the page instead of referring to her notes. Her tone inflection and volume is not commanding the attention of the room. Second, she never uses her hands to emphasize her points or frame her overall body language. Third, she is not curating her own words or the statements she's being given to read to the press. Part of the job is establishing boundaries with your administration. You don't walk up to the podium and pour out words you cannot sell to a national audience. She's saying the US does not participate in driving the internal policy in foreign nations which no one believes and nothing presented in modern human history would treat as a true statement.

It's one thing to "be cornered" in a press conference, it's another thing to corner yourself. Hiding behind "I'm just doing my job" is not enough. Because if you deal with the national press and a broad TV audience, you aren't actually doing your job if you can't sell your narrative.

This is not a career path for a sedate personality type. She's clearly there to appeal to the suburban female vote but that only actually works if she appears competent under actual duress.

The US State Department announced the launch of its third annual "Free the Press" campaign, which will purportedly highlight "journalists or media outlets that are censored, attacked, threatened, or otherwise oppressed because of their reporting." AP reporter Matthew Lee grilled Jen Psaki about the contradiction of its press freedom campaign and the James Risen case at the briefing, repeatedly asking if the government considers press freedom issues in the United States the same way it does abroad.

First video, she is not prepared for an obvious question. In a short engagement media scenario where she's going to be ambushed ( and she should know they are going to ambush her), she should have defaulted to "Agree And Amplify" tactics.

http://changingminds.org/techniques/general/more_methods/agree_amplify.htm

This is a bit beyond entry level PR, but this is the standard playbook. I have no idea what Psaki is thinking there. Don't hesitate, always go for the kill.

Second video, she is not at fault for Eric Holder trying to grind James Risen into dust. It's legacy of the old W. Bush administration to essentially profile and gut anyone who lifted the veil on the fugazi WMD situation. But since it highlights Obama's foreign policy when it comes to the US military, we can't have that. No, no, since Barack Obama is treated as some kind of political demi-god out there and even in here in this subforum.

But Psaki is flawed as her body language immediately reacts to the Lee's line of questioning. Never touch your nose when you are lying.  He made her repeat the key statement of targeted, imprisoned and harassed, which was a mistake. He didn't need it repeated, he needed to set the goalposts in one spot before he launched a flurry of pin down questions at her. Her job there was to see that coming and redefine the terms in place. As Don Draper always says, when you don't like what you are hearing, change the conversation.

Lots of weak or nonexistent fundamentals. This is like watching a running back have ball security problems because they can't understand the basic three points of contact standard with the football at the NFL level.

I see in her presser today she stated clearly that the $1.9B stimulus bill would not be split into separate measures.  I don't like the generic $1,400 checks, though.  Target the funds for those in need.

********

You are pushing the logical fallacy of false dilemma. There is clearly a middle ground between what Jen Psaki showed ( or didn't show) as spokesperson for the State Department and the goal of perfection at the White House podium.

Here in in the video above, she uses a term, "carousel voting" but doesn't know what it means. When directly questioned, she can't answer. Matt Lee of the Associated Press is a salty veteran of the press corps and he's literally playing with her. If you follow many of these videos, he's actually toying with Psaki because she's out of her depth. Part of the reason he's doing it is because one of the only ways to stop him is to trade him something ( i.e. one on one time with then President Obama) to  ease off the gas pedal.

Claiming political tribalism here is just plain weak. Psaki has a FULL STAFF at her disposal. Her job is the hard prep absolutely every possible contingency and question on matters that she's going to bring up. It's not like she's giving press conferences for 9 hours a day. She has all day to hard prep for the hour or so she's going to be in front of the camera. She can give or deny access at will, which is very powerful in her then position to keep the press in front of her pacified.

You want to burn me for tribalism because Psaki couldn't be bothered to Google or DuckDuckGo what carousel voting actually means and the context of it for then Ukrainian elections?

Cowboysfan8 said:
I disagree with her politics but find her quite attractive

Is that allowed?

If this was Major League Baseball, Psaki clearly has a "Double-A Version Of Carrie Coon" thing going for her.

She looks like she would be pleasant enough to take out for coffee and has a nice smile but this is not Match.com.  How pleasant she is aesthetically doesn't change the reality that she lacks the temperament and fundamentals to be White House Press Secretary. To be fair, this is an incredibly difficult job. But you are not paid to try your best here, you are paid for deliverable results.

If you want to stay as QB1 on the depth chart, you need to command the field and get your team into the end zone.

What's the problem here? Psaki can handle the press or she can't. Multiple times, in multiple examples I'm posting here and above, she's showing flaws in basic PR fundamentals. I'm actually discussing SPECIFIC POINTS where I see actual mistakes she's making that shouldn't be made at her current pay grade.

You know what good questions would be?

- How does primacy/latency, a basic psychology concept, play into handling an audience while public speaking?

- In crisis management, what's a "pin down" set of rapidly paced questions?

- What are the specific body language cues that will create a negative impression for a national TV audience?

- How do you differentiate playing up to your potential TV audience versus your on stage and live audience?

- How do you reset the narrative when you've been cornered?

- How do you avoid being cornered in a press conference?

- How do you neutralize a hostile actor like Matt Lee off the camera?

- How do you answer a question that is clearly indefensible on all levels?

Many opportunities to learn about how actual high level public relations/media spin works, but since I'm a conservative, the only thing that's important is to denounce me because my political leanings are across the aisle. How tragic is that?

In the first video with Blitzer, Psaki threw her predecessor under the bus. She also failed the DEER test ( Defend Explain Excuse Rationalize) that no competent White House Press Secretary should actually collapse under. We could talk about the DEER test but since it's only Orange Man Bad, I guess that's not going to happen now.

In the second video, Psaki has made the determination that there will be no determinations made at all.

I'm talking Psaki here and pointing out actual media optics and strategy, you are just shoveling more Orange Man Bad. He's not even in office anymore and you are still using him like a shield and battering ram. Is this your go to "one trick" to your one trick pony routine?

What's next? Go on, if you want some more, step up and come get some more.

Psaki Says Obama Doesn't Give Himself Enough Credit For What He Has Done Around The World (May 29, 2014)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyz_doLLoXk

*******

If you want flashback to 2014, let's do that right now.

Psaki corners herself by saying Obama doesn't give himself enough credit. Then when asked what specifically, she has no answer. Notice how she stumbles and looks for an escape. Part of the job is NOT giving the press an opening to create a negative headline for your administration. This wasn't some "red ball" controversial international issue that would give sleepless nights to anyone, this was Psaki literally putting herself in a corner and inviting attack from the press corps.

That she wasn't prepared to give an answer, a reasonable answer, to the predictable questions after she makes a statement like she did is either lazy or shows an inability to understand her job. No pathway speaks well for her.

Matt Lee, veteran of the Associated Press, came at her and was actually merciful to her. He could have hard pressed her and completely kneecapped her there but he didn't. That could have gotten real ugly real fast.

Would you like to pick another year in retrospective? Feel free to step up and come get some more. Bring a big bowl and a big spoon. I want to make sure if you decide to keep coming that you have all the tools required to eat the whole meal at once.
