Jeopardy Baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh (6 Viewers)

Ryan played for a tie today, which was an interesting decision. Ended up not mattering because the second-place player got FJ wrong.

On Monday, he also bet conservatively with the lead and would have lost if the second-place player had gotten FJ right, even if he had also gotten it right.

Relying on your opponents not to know FJ doesn't seem like the most sound strategy. But he's won 8 games so

Was his right glasses lens foggy all episode?  I did not notice it in his past episodes, so I don't think it was a weird reflection from a light.

8 time winner, eh? Haven't been watching.  Can't stand Bialik
Big man, little podium. He looks like an NFL nose tackle. Or maybe a little wider.

He’s not the most impressive champ of this insanely great year of amazing champs. But he might be my favorite.

Very chill dude. His resting heart rate must be around 40.

Very likeable champion. Maybe least accomplished school-wise, career-wise. Avid reader, but no prep for Jeopardy.

Austin Rogers was a memorable champ (12 games?) - NYC bartender, been at the same Hell’s Kitchen dive for 15 years

But he has an MFA & is an actor

an Uber driver taking down Goliaths in the ToC would be epic

When Austin was on, given the way he was comporting himself, I was like "there's no way this guy is just a bartender."

But Ryan looks and acts exactly like you'd expect from a Philly Uber driver. I even said to my wife -- I wouldn't be surprised if I've had this guy as a driver -- I've certainly had people who kind of look like him.

After seeing the responses to last night's final, I'm amazed that most of them never watched Braveheart - especially the champ.

It seemed like such an easy final...

I'm not sure how many people remember that Robert the Bruce became king.  Or that Bruce is the family name, for that matter.

Anything interesting happen yesterday?  We had bad storms going through so all I recorded was 30 minutes of tornado warnings moving across the area.

BTW you can find bootleg recordings of episodes on YouTube starting around 5pm. We stopped watching live last year. No commercials, it’s usually about 18:30 start to finish.

This is why I record them and watch at night.  Skip the commercials and the "lets get to know the contestants" part.

The closing scene talks about Robert The Bruce receiving his endorsement as king.

My friends that are also Braveheart fans were all talking about what an easy final it was.

But I am probably not very objective on this one since it's one of my all time favorite films.

Ryan becomes the 14th Mega Champion, and now stands 22nd in winnings.

5th seed for the ToC at the moment.

He’s been commenting every day on r/jeopardy, first Mega Champ this year to do so. The other four waited until after they were beaten. He’s engaging and friendly, always a kind word about someone (other players, producers, etc.)

Not the most impressive stats but good dude.

Also, it's a 17 year old movie.  I have no idea what the end scene was.  I kind of checked out when it became non-historic twaddle.

I got the answer because I know my Brit history.

Fun fact: Ryan was once a bouncer at a bar attacked by a raccoon.
another day, another runaway

Today was only his second Coryat score over 20K. Correct on 58% of DDs and 53% for FJ (both are low for ToC qualifiers.) Bets conservatively - but kudos for knowing his comfort zone abs not trying to be something he’s not.

Does enough to win though so who cares, eh?

After the one contestant wagered "5" on the DD and got it wrong, I kinda wanted to see her complain that they deducted $5000.  "I only bet 5!"

I wanted to complain about the contestant being ruled wrong for the grouse answer.  That was an Atwater's Prairie Chicken, but it's actually a grouse.  (They are very endangered and live not far from me.)  I get the feeling Ken would have known that.  At least they fixed it during the break.

I'd say, for a punny murder mystery title, "Irish creamed" is just as acceptable as "Irish stewed", if not moreso.

I like this current winner.  He just seems indifferent to the whole thing.  Kind of like he's tired of being there.
Returning champs already have an experience advantage and this guy doubles up on it with his laid back approach.  But I think he wants to keep winning, it has to pay better than driving drunks home from the bar.

One of the things he seems to me to have in common with the other big champs is that he gets mad when he gets one wrong and then goes on a run.  It stood out to me yesterday when he got the Kangaroo book symbol wrong (answered Penguin) on the DD and then a minute later had already more than made up for it.

Time to gripe some more about the quality of the contestants.  I get that an American might not know a battle led by an admiral happens at sea, but how does the Brit not know this?  She didn't even know about the Thames.  What part of the UK is she from? Kansas?

She knew it but was afraid that if she won she might miss the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

"England expects every man to do his duty."
- Admiral Horatio Nelson

I think that's one of the most famous quotes in English history, something every U.K. child learns about. Trafalgar Square is well known to both Londoners and tourists. Majority got it right in the FJ poll at r/jeopardy.

Prior to eeking out this win, Ryan had runaways din 4 of the last 5. The game before that streak was a lock-tie (he had exactly 2x 2nd place), so that was 5 out of 6 were dominant wins.

Ryan is now solo 10th on the Leaderboard of Legends with 14 wins. 9th place is 19 wins. He is 13th in regular season winnings.

Ryan Long, career statistics:
336 correct, 54 incorrect
10/17 on rebound attempts (on 45 rebound opportunities)
42.93% in first on buzzer (340/792)
12/19 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $19,000)
7/14 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $16,957

for context, the stats of the previous Ultrachamp (23 games):

Mattea Roach, career statistics:
661 correct, 63 incorrect
33/39 on rebound attempts (on 93 rebound opportunities)
46.02% in first on buzzer (625/1358)
29/36 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $57,200)
17/24 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $20,275

Amy and Matt, who were just otherworldly, had far better stats than either.

Still, they're all Top Ten all time, all in the same season! Amazing.

All three said Waterloo, which blows my mind.

True it has "water" in it, but there were no Admirals in that land battle.

Yeh, I know, not everyone knows history that well, but still.

The first word in the clue was “Admiral”

THE EARLY 19th CENTURY

Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve signaled "engage the enemy" around noon & surrendered at 1:45 PM during this battle

Very difficult FJ clue tonight.

(UNESCO World Heritage Sites)

I’ve been there & It took me a good 20-25 seconds. It was nearly 40 years ago but dang. Aw, the joys of middle age.

My fiancée said she knew it right away from The Amazing Race.

I knew it almost instantly. My first thought was Mecca but I figured it was unlikely a woman would say that about Mecca, so then I went right to Petra. I do love when I get FJ and all three contestants don't.

I could not come up with Trafalgar yesterday, but I knew it wasn't Waterloo.

Not from Indiana Jones?

One of my college professors dug there, so I knew it from her pictures of the dig.  And Indy, of course.  It helped that I knew who Gertrude Bell was,.

It's more like an orange red in person. I really feel for the two who answered Jaipur, since it is literally nicknamed the "pink city".

Terrible betting by all 3 players on Thursday's Final.

I've seen The Last Crusade multiple times and from that film and pictures I've seen of Petra, everything looks more beige than pink to me. Needless to say I whiffed on it.

Hard to believe @Mrs. Rannous hasn't made it on Jeopardy and been a multi-time champion yet.
I've passed the in-person test six or seven times.  Also the online test.  You still have to be picked for the show, and there are a ton of applicants.  I'm not getting any younger and I no longer play up to my standards, so I doubt I'll try again.  I'm just a bit slower than I used to be.  It was fun, though.

Wow, that has to be frustrating after passing it that many times. I would have thought that they would have had you on the show by now.  :hot:

I tried out once (in person) 30 years ago but didn't pass the first test (close, but no cigar). I know a lot more than I did back then, but as you said, I'm definitely slower in responding.
