Jeopardy Baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh (1 Viewer)

I had no idea who Evan Strong was.  Looked him.  I still don't know.

I had no idea Babe had been on the Wheaties box.
Didn't know him either, but based on the time periods of Babe and Roy's careers and the different sports, I decided pretty quickly it couldn't be the normal clothing/equipment brands, so that narrowed it down to the point where Wheaties seemed like a good guess.

Yesterday, on the other hand, was the type of FJ I hate: some reviewer somewhere said this about some book published in 1991. Yeah, once you hear the correct response, it makes sense, but there's very little chance that anyone can actually "know" about that review or figure out which one of numerous books it was about (especially when the correct response is known more for it's adaptation to television than it is as a book).

On the other hand, that's twice now that the current champ has won because she was able to properly calculate her FJ wager.

A rare 3 of 5 this week in FJ. They must be getting easier.
Today’s game was not very efficient. Lots of unforced errors.

Game Stats:
Megan $9,200 Coryat, 14 correct, 3 incorrect, 26.32% in first on buzzer (15/57), 2/2 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities)
Molly $6,800 Coryat, 14 correct, 6 incorrect, 26.32% in first on buzzer (15/57), 2/3 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities)
Sadie $9,800 Coryat, 17 correct, 4 incorrect, 28.07% in first on buzzer (16/57), 3/4 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities)
Combined Coryat Score: $25,800
Lach Trash: $15,400 (on 13 Triple Stumpers)
Coryat lost to incorrect responses (less double-correct responses): $12,800

Megan Wachspress, career statistics:
63 correct, 15 incorrect (80.77)
4/4 on rebound attempts (on 18 rebound opportunities)
29.96% in first on buzzer (68/227)
2/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $4,000)
3/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $10,050

But hey - 4 day champ ($51K) is still exceptional.

I sure could get Harriet Tubman from what she wrote there.
I believe the rules require that all letters be clearly visible.  I don't think they could see the last "man" part.  She could have saved time by just writing Tubman.  I know they reviewed it.  I'd be interested in a close-up of that one.

For lack of a single n it cost her 17K + a chance to return.  Maybe they will at least invite her back.

the light pen automatically cuts out after 30 seconds - whether they finished their answer in time is not a judgement call

r/jeopardy losing its collective minds on betting strategy.

ToC contestant with 52K after 5 is a little different.
Why the H E double hockey sticks didn't she bet $201?

Why did Bialik rule her wrong on the microscope question and then give the same answer as correct?  It's a scanning electron microscope, doofus.

This made twice in the past week that a mediocre contestant who had already missed a lot of answers bet outrageously high on a Daily Double and went down in flames.

Megan has broken a record, previously set by Donald Burgo in April 1986, for the lowest 5-day total in the history of the syndicated version of the show. (Burgo won $26,180 when the dollar values were half of what they are today; that translates to $52,360—$358 more than what Megan has won.)

*****************

Megan’s betting strategy has won her multiple games; one should be reminded of the well-known quote, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”; Megan has certainly made her own luck—her preparation and learning about betting strategy has certainly helped her win five games; for this, she is 100% absolutely a deserving five-game champion.

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions from thejeopardyfan.com:

(Scores: Tory $10,200 Megan $10,000 Ketty $200)

Megan: Bet between $401 (defending against Tory’s low-bet range) and $9,599 and you’ll guarantee at least second place. (Actual bet: $9,599)

Ketty: If Tory bets to cover and is wrong, he falls to $399. Bet everything and give yourself the best chance to win. (Actual bet: $0)

Tory: Standard cover bet today is $9,801. You should probably stick to that in order to force Ketty to go all-in to pass you. (Actual bet: $10,000)

Just 36 players have won 7 games or more.

Of the 25 who won 6 games, Megan has lowest total with $60,603. The next lowest was $94,752 by Christopher Short, $34,149 more than Wachspress.

Game Stats:

Megan $8,400 Coryat, 15 correct, 5 incorrect, 35.09% in first on buzzer (20/57), 0/0 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities)
Rob $16,600 Coryat, 18 correct, 4 incorrect, 28.07% in first on buzzer (16/57), 2/4 on rebound attempts (on 7 rebound opportunities)
Jenny $11,800 Coryat, 16 correct, 3 incorrect, 26.32% in first on buzzer (15/57), 2/3 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities)

Combined Coryat Score: $36,800
Lach Trash: $8,400 (on 10 Triple Stumpers)
Coryat lost to incorrect responses (less double-correct responses): $8,800

Megan Wachspress, career statistics:
96 correct, 25 incorrect 79.33%
5/5 on rebound attempts (on 26 rebound opportunities)
31.67% in first on buzzer (108/341)
2/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $4,000)
4/6 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $9,767

At one point all 3 had a negative score! Other than the multi day studs, what a weak season for contestants.

At least the champ had to get it correct to win.

And after 4 of 5 days of winning with the correct betting strategy, maybe the contestants will finally learn something about betting?

our short national nightmare is over

I kid, I kid

I liked Megan, she played the FJ bets well. less knowledgeable than most ToC qualifiers but crushed game theory. classic that she would have lost by two if she incorrectly bet all of it since she won three of six games by $2.

Amazed that Mayim ruled correct on Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum when the clue clearly specified the one of the pair that fit the category. Judges eventually got it correct but another contestant would have had the opportunity to ring in if Mayim had handled it correctly. She is truly awful at running the game.

It also seemed like she paused for a while before ruling the answer correct, as if she were waiting for the producers to tell her whether it was.

Why do we even rely on a host to say correct or not?

Judges are watching everything, give them a "button" to say yes or no.

If the judge says yes, the audience hears a pleasant "ding".

If judge says no, audience hears a "buzz".

It would be very mechanical and boring.  We just need a host with some personality.  Decent personality, that is.

Judges rulings are never shown, but it's not uncommon to have a game interrupted while they make a ruling. Not sure how long those delays are but verified contestants pop up on r/jeopardy all the time and make mention of it. They never show the process on the edited version which is broadcast.

I think she is getting more heat than she deserves over all. But, she does continue to make very similar mistakes time after time.

I think this is a classic case of....you don't want to be the one that follows the goat, you want to be the one that follows the one that followed the goat. The next host will be compared to Mayim and not Alex.

I read recently from a former contestant that any time there is a judge ruling, you can typically expect that there was close to an hour lost in taping that never airs on TV.
