Jeopardy Baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh (4 Viewers)

Little behind, we binged 3 shows tonight

Friday’s champ Robert Won, who revealed he in his interview he has an upcoming crossword puzzle submission accepted by the New York Times (it’ll be in a Tuesday?), has his own YouTube channel.

Robert VS NYTXW

Yep, live taping of him completing the daily crossword. Usually in 8-12 minutes, though some days take 20 minutes or more.

Math professor. My kind of nerd.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Steve $20,000 Ben $10,000 Tehmeena $3,200)

Steve: Bet $1. Your chances of winning are highest overall when you attempt to avoid a tiebreaker. Why not more than $1? Because the trailer often doesn’t bet everything; thus, exactly $1 give you the best chance overall to win. (Actual bet: $1)

Tehmeena: You don’t really have much chance to win today. Any bet that isn’t “everything” gives you the best chance of taking second place. (Actual bet: $3,200 aka "everything")

Ben: You have exactly one good bet: All $10,000. Anything else is terrible. (Actual bet: $3,000)

The show is definitely more lax than it used to be.  Dude gave Adams as the answer, and he wasn't asked to be more specific.  I guess it was Henry.

I was surprised at that one also, given the time range there were several prominent Adams.  Mayim seems to have upped the amount of answer goof ups lately.  Either allowing something like this, or declaring something wrong when the person had started to correct themselves.

Mayim is definitely not asking "be more specific" nearly as often as Alex did. I haven't noticed whether Ken is.

It had to be Sam Adams, as the question had a reference to drinking, and there's a beer named after him.

Another "fun finish" today. And I'll leave it at that.
welcome back, Ken!

So much to talk about…

13 incorrect answers, 18 triple stumpers

(5, 13 in the J! round, 8, 5 in DJ)

Judges rulings (4 questionable)

- the Stuyvesant ruling was harsh, he seemed consistent with his pronunciation there
- should have asked BMS in the Mt Rushmore DD (since both Rosevelts were born in the 1800s and alive in the 1900s)
- omitting an interior article has always been ruled incorrect: The House of 7 Gables was accepted, s/b The House of The 7 Gables
- finally, NFW you accept Godol for Godot if we’re being consistent; Sadie was denied “Tubma” bc she ran out of time writing Harriet’s last name. Erica Didn’t. Cross. The. T.

Worst game for judges I’ve ever seen.

Now let’s talk about Erica’s brain fart wager…she missed wagering 101, you bet to cover 2nd place doubling up, not 3rd.

I figured they didn't ask BMS because there is only one Roosevelt on Rushmore.
Obviously we expect anyone competing on Jeopardy! to have great general knowledge. Yet every night there are triple stumpers which I presume s/b easy gen knowledge (TBF I have huge holes and I'm completely glassy eyed in some cats.)

Yesterday featured these triple stumpers:

  • $200 GIVING YOU THE BOOT Buzzfeed featured these double-talk, thigh-high boots "that will look totally far out in your closet" (Go-go boots - 1 incorrect and 2 dnr)
  • $400 THE WOUK MOB In Wouk's "Aurora Dawn" from 1947, a young man works in this broadcast medium; Wouk lived to write a book partly in e-mails (Radio - 3 dnr)
  • $200 COLOR ME BAD This rhyming fictional "illness" involves police officers disrupting operations by calling in sick (Blue flu - 1 incorrect and 2 dnr)
Only 7% of Americans can name the four Presidents on Mount Rushmore.

Yeah, I think it warranted a BMS.

Or its companion, "A TRUE Daily Doub-ble!"

Today's FJ was one of the easiest opera questions I can remember seeing on the show. I know bupkis about opera but I got it instantly.
If you had told me on Monday that the first two FJ categories this week would be "Art and Theater" and "Opera" I'd have been about 90% positive I'd miss both. Instead, I got both by the time the music started.  They can make any category either unbelievably difficult or unbelievably easy.

Me, too! (on all counts, especially the weakness at Opera)

I always figure that these type of surprising correct answers make up for when I somehow miss a Final in one of my wheelhouse categories like Movies or Mythology.

Yes they had a couple categories this week where I thought I could run the board. Got the first 2 in each and missed the last 3 in both.

I “swept” 3 yesterday - 20th Century America, San Diego: news clues, and Let’s Build a House!

Now I know what Cliff Calvin felt like.

The song was from 1986, and the clue was most recent from 1993 so that threw me off.
My first thought was “Huh? He didn’t have any top 40 hits in 1993.” Then I realized they were asking “what was his most recent top 40 hit as of 1993?” And if it was played at an inauguration party in Tennessee, it had to be relevant to Al Gore somehow.

Graceland is at least a reasonable guess. From the contestants we got:

A. No answer at all.

B. A song not by Paul Simon.

C. A song from Paul Simon’s first solo album, more than 20 years before 1993.

Mr. Mojo said:
No one remembers You Can Call Me Al?
Barely and I don't recall it being a Top 40 hit.

I said Graceland

But I am pretty weak at Politics.
I had no idea who ran in 1993.

The problem isn't that no one remembers the song;  it's that Al Gore isn't exactly an exhilarating candidate.  He's dull as ditch water.

I guessed Graceland because it had to do with Tennessee.  And how the hell am I supposed to know when SImon's hits occurred?  Understand, I'm a major fan.  And "The Boxer" just turned up on my YouTube feed.

Two-Host Model "may continue" 👎

‘Jeopardy’: Mayim Bialik & Ken Jennings Poised To Continue As Hosts Of Syndicated Game Show

Jeopardy! would be sticking with its two-host formula. According to sources, Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings are in negotiations to continue to share hosting duties on the venerable syndicated game show’s upcoming Season 39. A source for Sony Pictures TV, which produces Jeopardy! would not comment on speculation.

Bialik, who previously was announced as host of the Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff series, and former Jeopardy! champion Jennings had been filling in as guest hosts of the mothership syndicated program following the abrupt exit of Mike Richards as host in August after one day of tapings. The two were subsequently named full-time hosts for the remainder of Season 38. The pairing seemed to work well, and was well received by fans.

Jeopardy! recently landed its third consecutive Outstanding Game Show Daytime Emmy Award. The eligibility period spanned the final episodes hosted by the late Alex Trebek as well as Bialik and Jennings’ tenures.

For Bialik, negotiations had focused largely on availability as the new season of her Fox series Call Me Kat is set to produce more episodes next season.
