Due to the Jewish holiday both teams are on at 1pm, I can't remember when the last time was that this happened. I'm sure it wasn't that long ago, no?

does the holiday only affect NY?
No, but both teams expressed concern that a large portion of their fan base would not be able to attend the game or watch, so they are both on earlier. The Giants even requested an away game I think, so it;s unusual that both NY teams are on at the same time. Was curious as to know when the last time was?

Last time the Jets and Giants played at the same time (other than head-to-head, of course) was 1984.

IIRC, the season ticket holders pushed for it, and the NFL realized they messed up making the schedule and gave in pretty quickly... the Jets & Giants make a request prior to the schedule being set for the accomodation.

Thanks, zamboni. I knew it was a long tome ago. Stinks but then again RedZone will take care of the 4pm slot
It certainly wasn't necessary that the team move the game earlier, but being Jewish, I do appreciate that they made the gesture.
i understand that you needed more time to atone for your sins.

Giants, Jets on at same time on Sunday because of Yom Kippur

There was no such thing as TiVo back on Oct.14, 1984, so New York football fans hoping to watch both of the local teams' games were out of luck if they weren't sitting in front of two televisions.

According to the NFL, that day was the last time the Giants and Jets played at the same time on the same afternoon (aside from head-to-head matchups), an extremely rare occurence that will happen again on Sunday, when the Giants play at Tampa and the Jets host the Titans.

Both games kick off at 1 p.m. because the NFL agreed to move the Jets' game up from 4:15 p.m. to accomodate fans who observe the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown.

In Week 7 of the 1984 season, the Giants played at Atlanta on CBS while the Jets played at Cleveland on NBC. Both games started at 1 p.m., but more importantly, both of the New York teams won - the Giants, 19-7, and the Jets, 24-20.

is this done for the fans or for the $$? (different starting times weekly that is). if you say the fans, i think you are wrong.

Obviously they are usually at different times for the viewship numbers and ad sales, NYC is the biggest media market in the country and the NFL wants all the ratings for 6 full hours, not just 3 hours divided between two groups of fans:http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...id=aLTj3ka761uI

This is the first time the two National Football League teams in the U.S.’s largest media market will play their games at the same time since 1984. They are usually staggered to help draw more television viewers.
Also, the Yankees-Red Sox game was moved from 8 pm to 1 pm on the same day for Yom Kippur as well, so the Giants/Jets/Yankees will all be on TV at the same time.
