Jets announce press conf 3 pm EST? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Buddy sent me an email that the Jets have a press conference scheduled for 3 p.m. today. Anybody hear anything? Abraham being tagged and traded to SD for Rivers?

Usually turns out to be nothing.

I perused theganggreen.com fan site. Supposedly WFAN is saying that Bradway is out.

EDIT: MKB4 beat me to it.

Here are my guesses:

1. Bradway out, Tannenbaum in (this would be an improvement, and something I predicted last month, so I'm rooting for it).

2. The Jets have selected a new practice facility in NJ.

3. Curtis Martin is retiring

As a JETS fan, please let #3 be accurate!I am here to say the JETS are a big time sleeper for one of the FA RB's OR will grab LenDale White.

CMART is not who a 35 year old coach would like to build around IMHO

Didn't think about this one, but could be possible. For that matter, I don't think Vinny and/or Chrebet have officially retired, so it could be one (or both) of them rather than Curtis.

THE NEWS

The Jets will likely designate Pro-Bowl defensive end John Abraham as their franchise player for the second consecutive year, the Newark Star-Ledger reported Tuesday. Abraham held out the majority of training camp in 2005 after the Jets put their franchise tag on him. The one-year offer for franchise defensive ends increases to $8.3 million this year, although Abraham's top priority is signing a long-term deal.

Bradway is OUT.

Bradway out as Jets GM

Tannenbaum will take over as Bradway's five-year reign ends FROM STAFF REPORTS

February 7, 2006, 1:38 PM EST

The Jets are expected to announce this afternoon that they have reassigned general manager Terry Bradway and replaced him with assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum.

The management change, which will come at a 3 p.m. news conference, ends Bradway's five-year run as the Jets general manager. It is expected that he will be reassigned with the organization, possibly as a scout

Tannenbaum, a New York native, will take over after nine years in the Jets organization serving as a director of player personnel and senior vice president, among other responsibilities.

During his tenure as senior VP of football operations and assistant general manager, Tannenbaum was responsible for overseeing the team's pro personnel department, professional scouting, and contract negotiations. He was also helped managed the team's salary cap.

Prior to joining the Jets in 1997, Tannenbaum spent two seasons in the NFL as a player personnel assistant. He lives on Long Island with his wife and daughter.

Do the Jets have cap room to tag him?

Listening to the Press conference...

Bradway And Tannenbaum HUGGED.

Bradway will stick around and be..... a scout :lmao:

Not much info to give other than regular sound bites about "Building a winner".

So Eric Mangini Wins the Power Struggle!!! -

So this whole thing's going all backwards. Should presumably strengthen Mangini's hand but the Jets have still managed to make a simple GM/Coaching offseason change into a total cluster...

-QG

Man, as a JETS fan this could easily have been Mangini resigning.

I'm glad Bradway is out, but why now? Was there a philosophical difference between him and Mangini? Are the Jets runnig a college team here!! Where is the strength in this team, the front office, the coaching staff, the players? This season is going to be a train wreck.

At least I'll have some reason to watch college games in 2006. The Jets will be in the top 3 again.

We passed on O.Pace. We passed on J.Ogden. Please oh please learn the lesson and select D.Ferguson this year.

IMO Jets are gonna lose someone. The organization has made it seem like they could re-sign everyone but I don't see it.Curtis and Chad's injury are regrettably the easiest money saving cuts I'd guess. If that were to happen(or Curtis and Mawae or Chad and Mawae etc) that would be a HUGE blow to the organization in leadership and intangibles.

But a huge step forward to eventually fielding a competitive team.

they have a bunch of good players, don't ya think?the right GM could make them competitive in 2006 no prob.

I like Thomas some and think it's about time they trade a DE and get something of considerable value in return. Defensively they could field a good unit for several years IMO. Offensively, they need stars. Seems like the Jets got the lunchpail guys but no stars left on O.

Not really. I don't have the exact numbers but, Chad's contract is going to sting for a little while - I think they are on the hook for at least 12 million Guaranteed.I can't really see him being in their plans -Other than sticking around long enough to Free his contract $$$ the easiest way... They just hired an OC who says he doesn't like to Dink and Dunk and doesn't like the WCo - So, Where does that leave Chad? It's his 6th year and like 5th new offense, this one being the worst possible for his "Strengths".... A 100% health Chad might have trouble winning the job in this system.

Abe would be the DE to go.... And I think Mangini may want to mold his defense without being hitched up to a Top Salaried DE with an injury history who also isn't the best fit to play a 3-4..... This way he can spend that money as he sees fit. Also that Defense played pretty well last year. Won a playoff game on the road in SD and took Pittsburgh to the brink all relying heavily on Defense and all without Abe.

I'm hoping Mangini can make more out of this defense - Add a Wide Body in the middle and perform the secondary miracles they did in NE. The secondary does have young talent - The LB's are good - all they need is a wide Body and some spare parts.

Apparently the new GM is the guy who pushed for the hiring of Mangini and they are good buds. The new Jets GM is only 36! He also was the dude most in charge of their salary cap - Jets fans can read into that one whatever they want.

Tannenbaum was grilled pretty well by Mike and the Mad Dog about his potential credibility issues not having football experience (he's an accountant and a lawyer). He held up pretty well, but he sounds soooo young. So Jets now have a 34 yr. old OC, 35 yr old HC w/ no HC experience, 36 yr old GM w/no GM experience.

How many of you believe that franchising John Abraham is an effort to trade him?

Who here really believes Mangini wants Abraham on his team in 2006?

I don't buy it.

If the former, where do you think he goes and what do they get for him?

in today's NFL you may need a lawyer/accountant to figure out the contracts and salary cap ins and outsI don't care about the ages as long as they've done well at their previous job. Mangini was a fine DC and positional coach. Marvin Lewis, BB and countless others were too. Who care what age they were.

I think Gruden and maybe Shanny were young when they started

it's not cut and dry IMO.No defensive minded coach is going to NOT want a guy with Abe's talent. No one wanting to fit under a cap is going to want him to have a huge contract. Unlike other players mentioned recently IMO Abe is good enough to switch a D around so you can unleash him.

Any player that would be considerred "bradyway's guy" on the Jets? I hope Justin McCareins is gone now. I just don't like him and IMO some here like him way too much just like Bradway did. He's yet to have as good stats playing as a #2 as when he was a #3 for Tennessee and IMO 2 years enough of a fair chance to prove himself.

Coles would be awesome as a complimentary WR. He's too quick and sharp with his cuts, few teams 2nd CB could keep up with him. IMO the Jets need a stud wideout

I only saw a few Jets games this year, but Abraham looked far from a top DE. Why would a team pay $8.3 million for an average DE? The only way this makes sense is if they trade his rights.

I heard this as well on the ride home. Tannenbaum really didn't say much, but the questions being asked were not questions he could answer truthfully. (pennington's future, mangini hiring). The thing that cracked me up were the whiners calling in on the FAN and ESPN radio about how young they all are, how tannenbaum isn't a football guy, but an accountant/lawyer and how Woody Johnson (owner) is too secretive.

These are probably the same people who were whining about Edwards and Bradway in the first place. They got what they wanted and they're still not happy. just can't please some people.

If the Jets' youth movement is any indication of how the are going to address player personnel, I gotta believe they'll go after a young gun at QB (draft/trade) for Mangini to really put his signature on the team.

Overall I'm happy with how things are turing out so far. The Jets will be bad/average for the next two seasons and the coaching staff will go through some growing pains, but if/when they get things rolling they'll have a front office and a coaching staff for the long haul.

As a dolphin fan, I think this is what concerns me the most. The Jets will be getting younger, but perhaps they will also get smarter in teh way they handle things. If I was the GM of the dolphins, no way I trade for AJ feeley when both Volek and Schaulb were FAs the same year. It is better to get a slightly less talented player (assuming the grades had AJ> Volek) than a slightly better one and give up a draft pick. Older GMs don't think this way. These new guys might.

It's always dangerous to speculate on how guy will do his job based on who he used to work for. That said, I think the Jets are in a fairly clear-cut situation. Here's the breakdown:

O-line

The O-line has two young starters in Brandon Moore and Adrian Jones. Kendall still has a couple of good years. Mawae is too old for his price tag, and Fabini is probably done. My guess is that Kendall moves to center to try and extend his career. The Jets might draft the Brick and sign a guard, but I fully expect Mawae and Fabini to be cap casualties.

WRs

Coles will remain the #1. Cotcherry will begin in the slot, but will push McCareins for PT. Expect another mid-round WR to be drafted, or a 3rd-tier FA. I think the Jets think they can win with the WRs they have, and I'm inclined to believe them... I don't think you can judge Coles and McCareins b/c of the QB situation.

RBs

No real changes here unless Martin retires. If he does, I still don't expect the Jets to draft an RB, but instead I expect them to go the FA route and see what they have in Houston and Blaylock. At FB, Sowell is a cap casualty, and BJ Askew takes his place. The Jets will draft another FB on day 2.

TE

No changes. Baker will be back from injury and regain the starting role. Jolley will be in some packages, but won't get much PT if he doesn't learn to block better.

QB

This is the big one. I expect the Jets to try and slide down from #4 and then take Cutler, or to trade for Phillip Rivers. Before the shakeup, I thought the Jets would look to sign Jon Kitna or trade for Pat Ramsey and let that guy duke it out with Pennington. Now, I think the Jets are going to select or acquire a young guy, and let Pennington have one last go at it before turning the reins over.

D-line

Abraham will either sign a long-term deal or get traded for Phillip Rivers or on draft day. I think Abraham is the prototypical tweener LB/DE in a 3-4, and his flexibility is a real asset for Mangini, so I think they will make an effort to keep him. The Jets also need a DT, and I think Grady Jackson might be the answer (and will share time with Sione Pouha). I fully expect the Jets to draft another DE.

LB

With Eric Barton coming back, I don't see too many changes to this unit.

Secondary

Ty Law is a goner. The Jets will let Justin Miller take his place alongside David Barret, and will seek to add another corner, probably in FA. At safety, Kerry Rhodes and Erik Coleman will likely be the opening day starters, but Coleman seems vulnerable - he was beaten deep a number of times.

I expect the Jets to address QB, DE, T, and either RB (if Martin retires) or WR with the 4 first-day picks I'm projecting them to have (I think they will trade down and get another 2nd rounder in that deal).

These are probably the same people who were whining about Edwards and Bradway in the first place. They got what they wanted and they're still not happy. just can't please some people.
HUH????WHY do people think that if someone is Unhappy with the Management team in place, then they BETTER be happy with whoever the hell their replacements are...And THAT"S what they asked for.The people who Hate GW Bush - If Jeb Bush wins the next election are they shackled to now Having to be happy "THEY BETTER BE HAPPY, THEY HATED THE LAST GUY"What kind of reasoning is that? And who's to even say it's the same people?I didn't like Bradway's hire and I didnt like the way he went about building this team in 2001 as well a few assistant hires...At this point I have every right to question whatever the new Front office does - And there is a concern about Shottenhiemers experience at OC...Hey - If they Cleaned house and came back and gave us Ron Wolf and Bill Parcells, I just might agree with you but... I don't get it. We can also evaluate how they work the draft...It's a new Front office - they get graded by the fans and media with little bearing on what the last guys did. There's also still the concerns over the owner and what his intentions were in buying this team and if he was mostly in it for a NYC stadium - That didn't just go away.People have no reason to just be happy with.. Change just for the sake of Change..... We want to see actual Improvements and will evaluate every move as we see fit and as fans and the media do.

True. He just repeated his stock line: We're going to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to get this organization the best players for the team." They kind of reminded me of prosecuting attorneys: they'd make all of their (sometimes long-winded) points about youth, lack of experience, the football guy (mangini) getting last say over the finance guy...and then add "Isn't that right?" or "You could understand how people would think that, right?" to make it into an interview question. :)
