After signing with the Jets as a free agent in late July, Lavarenues Coles said that New York would be his last stop and he planned to retire with the franchise he'd spent seven of his previous 10 NFL seasons. Coles' retirement might come sooner than he expected, though -- the Jets released Coles on Sunday in their latest round of roster cuts.

Coles, 31, saw a quick drop in his production last season with Cincinnati. In his lone year with the Bengals, Coles hauled in 43 catches for 514 yards, the worst numbers he'd posted since his 2000 rookie season. He then sat untouched on the free-agent market for much of the summer, until the Jets came calling. Coles, who played for the Jets from 2000-02, then again from 2005-08, came aboard this time in New York as an expected Santonio Holmes replacement at the start of the season -- Holmes is suspended for the Jets' first four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Instead, Coles didn't even make it out of the preseason. Assuming that interest for him hasn't picked up unexpectedly -- and his four catches for 19 yards in the Jets' three preseason games didn't turn any heads -- Coles will find himself waiting around to hear from the Jets again. He could come back as an injury replacement, or he could opt to sign a one-day contract with the green and white, and call it a career.

Not a shocker here, but I thought he would have stayed through the Holmes suspension at least as a 3rd down option.

Had to check that he was still just 31.

Appears to be 32 now, but his career went downhill quick. Tt appears he may be resigned (Jets didn't want to guarantee his salary)

I saw nothing last year to show he'd be a real asset in any capacity.

Greg Buttle (sp?) was speculating today that he could likely end up on the final roster, but was cut so Jets could look at some other bubble players.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said it's "a real possibility" the team could re-sign Coles after the first week of the season.

"He did an outstanding job for us," Ryan said. "He's a leader. He came in here and I know he knows the system. He's tougher than nails. He's a great teammate."

Not sure there is any value here either way unless there are some huge injuries, but some additional info from the team...

I didn't want to belive Darrell Jackson was done in his late 20s but Coles has gone down hill so fast. I thought whne he signed with Cinci that it might work out and then I was reading reports where that system didn't fit him and I still thought he would catch on somewhere. In 2006 he had 90/1,098/6, '08-70/850/7Tds...then he went to Cinci and just vanished.

other than his contract disputes, i really liked Coles.

He just got laid out too many times chasing Pennington's ducks.
