Jets sign former Cardinal Wadsworth

Erik Matuszewski

Bloomberg News

Mar. 26, 2007 06:02 PM

The New York Jets signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth, a former first-round draft pick who hasn't played in the NFL since 2000 because of knee injuries.

Wadsworth, 32, was the third overall pick in the 1998 draft after quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. He played three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, totaling 119 tackles and eight sacks in 36 games.

Wadsworth underwent four knee surgeries, three on his right knee and one on his left, before being released by the Cardinals after the 2000 season. The Jets didn't disclose terms of his contract in a news release.

not too many players that have had successful returns after over a half decade layoff come immediately to mind... if he can even make the team it would be a notable achievement...

 Mentioned it in the IDP forum, but his age (32) and inactivity (less experience and not being in shape) is all going against him. I doubt he even makes the final roster. Makes for a nice story if he does, but highly unlikely IMO.

Interesting signing. Worth a shot, no risk really.

I guess it's fair to assume a mini tryout of sorts went OK.

If he's in top shape and was all determinned to do this.....eh it'll be interesting.

White and Smith played until they were around 40 right? He could still have some years left in him.

BUMPing this because he did well in minicamp as an OLB (maybe tweener DE/OLB type but it really seems OLB guys) and word is he's in phenomenal shape. His close friend is a well known trainer named Brett Fisher so probably that has something to do with it.

One point which might make him edge someone out when roster cuts get tight is "everyone" is already commenting on how well he gets along with everyone and will be/is a great lockerroom influence.

Still a longshot but it seems the reactions have gone from: "eh, it's worth a short" to "wow maybe he really can do this."

FWIW DEEP IDP league guys might have to pick him up now and see how it pans out.

There's a good amount of articles on him recently if ya feel like googling. He's going to get the press so if he does well first week of preseason, he'll be picked up ASAP.

Good for him...I love these stories. :lmao:
He's certainly a "driven" individual. There's some neat stories about him being a walk on at Florida State, about how he learned all he could about cars+selling them to be a successful dealership owner and not just an investor, and of course about just how much he had to work out and rehab to get to this position he's in now with the Jets.

email I got "Wadsworth looks real good so far and even knocked Tony Fisher's helmet off with a vicious hit. I'm sure people will be talking about that hit weeks from now."
