Jocks\Sport-o\Roper\Non-geeks - do you find the lyrics (1 Viewer)

I was listening to Spotify this morning, and song "The Geeks Will Inherit The Earth" came on. Below are some of the lyrics:

I remember trying to talk to you in highschool
Couldn't even get a look cause you were too cool
But now we're older were playing by the new rules
We lived and learned!

'Cause as time moves on
We find we belong
And then in the end

We were the ones you used to make fun of
We stayed at home alone instead of fallin' in love
We never got the chance to be prom king
We didn't even dance but here's the thing:
We got the cars
We got the money
We need some sun but I'm tellin' you honey
That the geeks will
Ge-ge-ge-ge-ge-ge-ge-ge-ge-geeks will
We will inherit the earth
{The geeks will inherit the Earth}
The geeks will
We will inherit the Earth
{The geeks will inherit the Earth}
I was really curious if non-geeks found those lyrics insensitive or offensive?

I think true geeks would find the lyrics offensive. Most geeks I know really don't care what jocks think. It's not like they were sad all through high school. Most of them are perfectly happy being geeks.

I wonder if that is a generational thing? Most geeks from my generation would have given their best 20-sider to be popular for a day.

Were/are you a geek, or are you relaying how you think geeks felt? I think most people think geeks want to be "cool," but really, most don't and most realize that being smart will pay more dividends in the long run than being able to catch a football.

Maybe we are defining "geek" differently. I was a geek in high school (played on the chess team, in the drama club, really good in math/science, etc.). Most of the kids I hung out with would probably be considered geeks. But we weren't "losers" and we didn't get picked on all the time. We were just smart guys that didn't play team sports but had other interests. None of us ever pined to be the other guys, and in fact, we thought they were pretty lame.

My son is in a similar spot now. He's 20, studying computer science, and plays piano and drums like no one's business. He's never been considered "cool," but he's totally good with who he is.

So I think a lot of the misconception of geeks is done through movies and through "cool kids" thinking that everyone wants to be like them. It's really not the case.

Not offensive.

The thing about this though is this person's attitude is crap. They now have some sort of perceived step up on the people who they hated for having a step up on them in the past and now that they have it they act like a #### about it.

"Geek" in my experience = someone who is on the outside, and most likely has been put down, ignored, or marginalized for things that make them different or things that interest them. In the case of this song, i think they are probably speaking more toward the traditional geek, who spent more time with computers and have parlayed that into a lucrative career.

General - I agree with you that the sentiment is bad. If someone who was marginalized turns around and does the same to their former tormentors, there haven't really learned anything.
