Porter Heads To Miami

Former Steeler Agreed To Contract With Dolphins

POSTED: 8:32 am EST March 6, 2007

PITTSBURGH -- Former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter has a new contract.

Overnight, Channel 11's Alby Oxenreiter learned the Pro Bowler has agreed to a five-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

Sources said the deal includes about $24 million in guaranteed money and a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $12 million.

Porter is expected to sign his new contract on Tuesday in Miami.

His final choices were between the Dolphins and the Cincinatti Bengals.

This year, the Steelers play the Dolphins at home.

The date for the game has not been set.

I guess Pittsburgh isn't an important enough town to require all it's anchors change their names to something that reads well on billboards.

We have an anchor here in Austin named Judy Maggio. Seriously.

Z. Thomas, C. Crowder, J. Porter  :drool:Now if we could just fix that secondary.
So if Zach is in the middle and Crowder is the WLB , that leaves Joey at SLB ?What projections do we see in that spot for him or does the way Miami play D allow for more flip-flop of WLB & SLB or .. does Crowder go to SLB?Thoughts?

They play a 4-3/3-4 hybrid, so Jason Taylor is a DE and OLB depending upon their alignment. I think Porter is the ROLB and will have heavy pass rushing duties, and Crowder and Thomas will fill the two ILB positions.

Good job eagles for going after him
I don't agree with your criticism. Porter's a classic ROLB in a 3-4 defense, with a skill set geared heavily towards rushing the passer. The Eagles run a 4-3 and have some pretty good pass rushers. He's not what they need.

Joey Porter's mouth is bigger than his game. I thought Miami was going to go after high character guys, not just characters?

I'll guess Porter ends up like most LB's the Steelers let go to greener pastures...as a disappointment to their new team. In this case $20 million dollars in contract guarantees richer.

The AFC East keeps getting stronger. I think they have been the busiest division so far this year. I initialy was excited to see the Bills get a leg up on the division when they pounced on those offensive linemen. But every team in the AFC East has done something pretty dramatic to improve thier team. As a Bills fan I'm not excited to face Adalius Thomas and Joey Porter twice a year. Nor am I glad to face Thomas Jones twice a year either. I think the AFC East could be a very tough division this year. At least better than they were last year.

I'm pretty sure they bring Taylor off the open end, so it'll be interesting to see how they use Porter. I wonder if they'll be playing more traditional 3-4 looks after all. I'm probably guilty of underrating Porter's all-around LB skills, but I think he's just an okay fit as a straight up replacement for Donnie Spragan in last year's schemes IMO.

X

I have never been a fan, but Joey Porter is an animal.

And now the rest of NFL should get to know James Harrison a little better. He performed at or near Joey Porter's level when he filled in for an injured Clark Haggans in 05, and the Steelers have him signed long term for pennies on the dollar.

And yes, Porter's play never really did live up to his talk.

 Porter was a good player while he was here and had some monster games, but there's no way the Dolphins get out of him what they paid for him. Another good move by the Steelers to know when to let a guy go.

This signing confuses me due to the guaranteed money. Miami has some key players on D that are aging. They need to get younger. Porter while still effective appears to be getting a little long in the tooth. Committing 20 mil to him seems to be excessive. If they were a player or two away I'd understand this but on the surface you would think this money could have been put to better use. Miami has some decent holes to fill and with other holes on the way due to age it may have made more sense to spend this type of coin on a younger player.

I have had Harrison stashed since last year thinking this day might come. Harrison is a beast and will help the Steelers fans forget about Porter. I am biased though since we went to the same school (Kent State) and I have met him several times.

Actually he's not. Porter has the instincts and skills to play any LB position. He may have been originally thought to be a pass rusher when he first came in the league, but that has changed. He's just as productive in coverage as he is in chasing the QB. His weakness has always been technique.

Jesus, Porter and Taylor rushing the QB will be a nightmare for opposing QB's....
 Oh God I pray that Brady doesn't get injured by these crazy bastards
How the hell did this slip past the language filter?

A little pricey for me.

But, considering the buying frenzy out there right now, I guess its market value.

I think he will be a good fit for Miami.

Bump for MNF.

There's no way Miami is getting their $20 million worth.

Joey Porter is one of the worst offseason signings of 2007.
