Johnny Cueto, $player.pos - Reds

According to the Associated Press, Cueto has won a spot in the Reds' rotation.

Fantasy Source spin: He could be as high as the team's No. 3 starter. The word is out about Cueto in fantasy leagues as well, and he should be owned in all formats.

How do you guys think he will do?

good in keeper leagues. redrafts? overvalued.

In a deep redraft he's ownable, shallow one? Not so sure. I'm more confident in my late round pitchers (Greg Maddux, Brian Fuentes, Pat Neshek, Rich Harden) than I am in Cueto. If one of my guys gets sent to the DL before he's picked up I'll do a speculative add, but that's it.

I think the kid's going to be something special, don't get me wrong. I just don't think he's worth the risk in shallower leagues unless you have the bench space, the guys only pitched 22 innings of +AA ball. Next season's a whole different story, if he does well he may be set to hurl 200+ innings. We'll see if he maintains something close to the 1+ K/IP ratio he had in the minors.

Cueto is worth a late round flyer. His minor league peripherals were pretty special. He could struggle for a while at this level (and probably will) but his upside is higher than typical end of draft SPs.

I've been waiting for Yahoo to put this guy out there.

Is he worthy of #1 waiver in a redraft 20-team points only league?

I plan on trying to use my #4 waiver position to get him in a dynasty, hoping the top 3 go to sleep here.

Yahoo has done a pretty good job this year in getting prospects into their database. Cueto, Adenhart & Alexei Ramirez appear to be the only early season guys who aren't in the system yet. There will be guys called up later in the year of course but waiver priorities change a lot between March and September.Hard to say whether he's worth the #1 priority. It depends on the amount (and stupidity) of drops in your league. By taking Cueto now, you're giving up the opportunity to pick up somebody who starts slow and gets dropped early. That may be worth the risk in a 20 team league.

Yeah, tough call. Forgot about Adenhart too. If one gets added before the other, I might let him go to see if someone puts in a waiver for him...otherwise I can snag when he clears and keep the #1 waiver.I actually think Adenhart > Cueto in the dynasty, no? I'm putting in requests for both of them for sure in that league. I'm gonna post in my other thread about this...

today......not so good.

2/3 inning

3 hits

5 R

5 ER

5 BB

0 SO

1 HR

ummmm....I wouldn't push any panic buttons but that wasn't a good sign.

He's a rook, if you drafted or picked him up these types of outings will come with the territory. He'll also have outings that will remind you why you found room on your roster for him, just be sure you start him those days.

I'm sitting at #1 waiver priority in a 12 team 5x5 roto redraft league (standard rosters w/ 5 bench slots & 1250 IP limit).

My staff including bench slots:

King Felix

Myers

Cain

McGowan

Hughes

Meche

Soriano

Capps

Sherrill

Rauch

Is it worth burning the priority on Cueto when he gets added to Yahoo?

I'm currently leaning against the move. He's probably a spot starter at best on my staff. I have a couple of holes in my batting lineup (Drew, A.Cabrera, Towles) and I'd hoping somebody makes a dumb drop that will allow me to improve my team.

Tempting, but I think I'd hold it in this scenario.

I wish I was watching him pitch right now, how's he look? All I have are numbers and they're fantastic.

Ah, I was hoping this would not happen! My keeper draft is tonight and I've had Cueto targeted for weeks now. Not that he was really flying under the radar any more, but giving up only one hit and striking out 10 batters through 6 will definitely boost his draft stock.

I just watched the last couple batters, but he looks very good from what I saw.

Yeah I missed this great start thanks to Yahoo but at least I had 1st waiver priority in a keeper league and grabbed him!

Final stats of first career start:

7 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K

Love that Baker took him out after 92 pitches despite retiring another six straight after the HR. It'd have been nice if Weathers could have reinforced the good decision with a solid 8th.

10Ks with that pitch count is very impressive for a young pitcher

no way he gets to my #4 waiver crap ### expansion keeper team now.

looking to add him with #3 waiver in a 20 team redraft and #7 waiver in a 10 team redraft.

still debating using the #1 in a 20 team redraft on him. probably should in a 20 teamer.

I'm using my #1 waiver priority in a 12 team mixed. I wasn't planning to, but his outing today makes him attractive trade bait.

i don't want to jinx him early tonight....but there is something pretty cool about watching a kid strikeout the side.

we need a nicname for this kid.
