JPP, why? (1 Viewer)

JPP's best games last year (statistically) were weeks -

1 (5 solos, 2 sacks, 1 FF)

3 (7 solos, 2 sacks)

5 (5 solos, 2 sacks)

14 (6 solos, 2 sacks, 1 FF)

15 (11 solos, 1 sack)

16 (4 solos, 2 sacks)

In his other 10 games, he had 29 solos, 5.5 sacks, and 0 FF/FR/INTs. So what made those 6 games so special? Either Osi or Tuck (or both) was out. When all 3 were playing, JPP didn't have the best of numbers. So with Osi no apparently back and happy with his contract (and still in a contract year), how can we expect JPP to have a similar statistical season?!

On a per play basis, JPP has virtually no chance to replicate his stats. I think that those in redraft leagues are hanging their hat on the assumption that the coaching staff knows what kind of talent JPP has and will allow him to play more snaps at the expense of Osi or Tuck. I think we'll start to see more of a Tuck/Osi rotation this season to keep them healthy, in addition to getting JPP more snaps.

Oh, and little known fact. Last year the NFC East (which the Giants are in) were the only teams to face all 4 teams who gave up 50+ sacks last year (Rams, Cardinals, Dolphins and Seahawks). Just something to think about with those games being replaced with the NFC South (the least sacked division last year) this year.

One interesting point for JPP - The Giants were down a lot of DB's last year. This year they get Thomas back and Prince, plus Prince has another year experience. I normally equate good secondary play to at least a few coverage sacks.

I guess my question is "will JPP be the one getting them"? With Osi and Tuck there and healthy, how will the 3 be used? They can't use all 3 as 3-down DEs, can they? Will they still put Kiwi on the line on 3rd downs?

Hard to tell, but considering they like to move him inside on some downs I suspect he's going to get enough playing time. I think it's safe to assume that he's not likely to match his career year, but a coverage sack here and there combined with a solid offense I think will be enough to keep him in the top 5-7.

On passing downs, Tuck will probably get used at DT with JPP and Osi on the outside

agreed.

I expect more of the same from JPP. Without a doubt he plays with more heart than any other player on that defense. (And I love Tuck, Osi, Thomas and all those guys.) He just gives 110% on every single play. He never quits, he never gives up. I watched every single Giants game last year and it performance was simply unbelievable. He's an athletic freak that just doesn't let up. Far and away the most valuable DE in Dynasty IDP leagues.

I actually just traded Gronk and a 2013 4th for JPP, 2013 2nd, and $10 League cash. (IDP is weighted heavily in this league JPP outscored Gronk by more than 20 points last season)

The impression I get from OTA and minicamp reports is that JPP is the starter and won't come off the field. Osi will come in on passing downs when they go with 3 DE's on the line and Kiwi will be the 4th DE when they go with 4 DE's on the line. I see Tuck getting rotated more than JPP. JPP added weight, so it could be when Tuck needs a breather, they'll slide JPP to that spot and put Osi in at JPP's.

Took a little bit of time to think about this point and it is a very valid one, but look at the sackers that play in the NFC East- JPP and the rest of the Giant's ends, Ware, Babin and Cole, and even the Redskins had Orakpo and Kerrigan. So is it that these teams had horrific pass blockers or they just ran into a buzz saw of pass rushers. Most likely a combination of both as well as being pretty bad teams that fell behind and had to pass. Thinking of spending a pretty high pick on JPP in very heavy big play format. We start 3 defenders any position 6 points sack and 1 point tackle. What are your thoughts on him? I would like to see this post keep rolling. Also I am thinking of maybe taking a shot at sackers that are in the AFC East (Miami-Wake, Buffalo-Mario and even the other end forgot name,NE?, NYJ?) as they play the NFC West this year. Also didn't even think about it but all but Miami on your list played SF and Aldon Smith twice. His chances of repeating or performing above last years numbers seem very realistic. Football Guys experts have JPP pegged for 16 and 14 sacks. What are your thoughts about my ramblings?

Osi, Tuck, and JPP do not have an effect on each other. They all play plenty, often on the same down, and all are great DL options.

I'd say ol' matty (the OP) has some pretty good stats to back up his statement that they do have an effect on each other. At least last year they seemed to.

I think they do have a pretty big effect on one another, but is it enough to knock JPP out of his current "top 2 status", or Tuck out of his #1 type DL spot?

So far I'm going to have to say I called it. Tuck, Osi, and even Bernard are getting tackles and sacks and so far it's really hurting JPP's production. He's down 7 tackles and 3 sacks from this point last year. I was thinking a game against tackling dummy Cutler would help him out. He does, though, play the Browns this weekend.
