Just ate at Joe's Kansas City BBQ (2 Viewers)

love this thread being bumped.  brings back fond memories.  i won my weekly pick em, ATS, with 100 participants, for the first time.  the raiders won.  and we had lunch at the gas station on monday.  great trip!

KC #1 Destination for work/play combo

Kansas City — known for its barbecue, jazz scene and for having more fountains than Rome — is home to attractions including The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kauffman Stadium, Worlds of Fun and a bustling downtown. It comes out on top of 115 global cities in the ranking, which were chosen because of their prominence in the tourist industry and availability of “slow” travel options.

I dont want to go through 6 pages, so sorry if its answered somewhere. If one goes to Joe's BBQ, does the location matter?

The 'gas station' on 47th street is the original.  Some swear it's the best.  However I've been to the one in Overland Park (it's actually Leawood) a bunch and enjoy the food there as well.

Agree.

For someone coming into town I would go to the gas station. It's the original and so unique. Just be prepared to wait in line for a bit, but they move pretty quick and it's worth the wait. I work about 3 minutes from there.

I do completely agree with this part.

In the before times (pre Covid) I travelled to KC a lot for work and after several stops at the gas station on different trips I started seeking out other BBQ joints or even the Ice House in P&L that serves Joes BBQ.  I never noticed a big difference in the Joe's locations, but there is a special atmosphere about the gas station location.

I don't believe the bolded is correct.

And, with more than 200 registered fountains, Kansas City is said to have more fountains than any city except Rome, Italy, thus giving it the nickname the “City of Fountains.

Rome #1, KC #2

I will be back in KC the first week of June. Joe's, here I come! My mouth is already beginning to water...
You going to the gas station location? It's about 3 minutes from where I work.
That's the only location I have ever been to. I have taken an Uber there in the past and will likely do the same. I will be staying at the Westin Crown Center...not sure where other locations are with respect to that.

That will be your best location for sure from the Westin.

Not sure how far that would put you from the Jack Stack near Union Station - that might be another nice meal.

Great idea. He could probably walk there.

lol...I would be happy to meet up for a drink or two. Would have to be in the evening. I'll be there to grade AP Physics tests. They are slave drivers with the schedule....very rigid from 8 AM - 5 PM every day. 15 break in AM...3/4 hour lunch...15 min break in PM...ruin kids' hopes and dreams in between.

Jack Stack reservation set for tomorrow night with a few of my fellow Physics nerds.

You will love it. The restaurant is cool and in a really neat spot. Enjoy.

Another Joe's trip in the books! As great as ever. Had to stand in line for over an hour though. Z-Man, Burnt Ends and fries. Plus, I bought more of their Big Meat Seasoning and French Fry Seasoning to take back home with me.

Alright, I know this is a Joe's thread, but by association it naturally encompasses the broader KC BBQ scene. I ate at Q39 on Thursday. I think the burnt ends were as good, if not better than, Joe's. Oddly, the only way to get burnt ends at Q39 is to order the brisket plate (burnt ends + brisket + 2 sides). This is odd because you can order many other things from the menu and add a rib, or add brisket, etc...for a small upcharge. You can't add burnt ends, nor can you order them solo. They did have a burnt end burger on the menu. One of the guys I was with ordered it, and it disappeared before I could even try everything on my own plate, so it seems that was pretty good. The brisket, however, was just a touch dry. It was still tender and had a decent flavor, but sauce was a must. This was not too big of a problem because I really liked the sauce at Q39. It had a little zing to it. Now, when I have eaten Joe's brisket, it has always been on the Z-man, so I may not have a fair comparison, but from picking pieces out of the Z-man from time to time, I think Joe's plain brisket is better. I had baked beans which were OK, nothing spectacular. I thought the fries were also as good as Joe's...they were cut slightly thicker and had a similar seasoning and crisp to them. I had one pork spare rib at Q39 as well. It was very good.

IMO, the burnt ends are the best thing at Q39. Probably the best I've had anywhere now that I think about it. Just delicious. I also buy their rubs and use them at home - good stuff.

I am sort of bummed out. My annual pilgrimage to KC for BBQ (actually for purposes of grading AP physics exams) will not be happening. The test grading for physics has been moved to Tampa, FL. I am going to miss my Joe's this summer. I'm going to have to eat a cubano or something.
