Kamerion Wimbley (1 Viewer)

UnderRated

Footballguy
My league has added OLB as a postion this year so I'm checking out some players I wouldn't have otherwise...

What do u guys think about Kamerion Wimbley this year with the new Defensive Coordinator?

I see he is ranked pretty low around here. Hmmm

I use to think very highly of him based on his rookie season. His problem is that since then he hasn't shown that he can get off of a block. I guess that his speed moves are pretty well documented now that teams have plenty of film on him, so he doesn't get to surprise people and use the body lean around the edge anymore. He's been exposed and hasn't added enough to his game to force a counter.

Even with the new regime I don't know that he's really getting better, he seems to just get stalemated and blocked out of so many plays. I don't know if they intend to keep him at LOLB, but that's where they moved him for the first preseason game.

Personally I think that he needs to be moved around so he can at least use his speed against guys who aren't expecting it. I prefer him stunting or coming on a delay often, because he simply has trouble lining up and setting the edge and/or getting much of a pass rush. He's also a bit lost in space and doesn't react like an instinctive linebacker at all. On the plus side he can run pretty fast if nobody gets their hands on him. He looks strong and cut, but he doesn't really blow people up like you'd expect considering the mass x acceleration physics.

To make things more complex, I think that his problems are coachable things. I've been really high on him and now I'm really low on him for fundamental flaws. However I can't write him off as a bust yet because if things click for him he's going to be a bit of a beast.

I think in terms of fantasy value you can't rely on him to start, but you can certainly take him as a boom or bust type bench player and dump him after a few weeks if you don't see improvement. The specific improvement that I would look for is playing lower with better leverage and using his hands to put lineman off balance and counter back inside with quickness. He's got the speed and quickness to get a guy going one way, he just needs to counter and make stronger moves inside. If he starts throwing players aside after putting that outside move on him he'll be a star. I still prefer him moving around often presnap, but LOLB may not be so bad considering he's left handed. If he doesn't show an ability to get off blocks and/or set the edge on the strong side dump him.

I'll watch him vs the Lions and let you know what I think.

:confused:I'm not rostering Wimbley unless I'm in a very deep big play scoring league and have a roster spot to burn. He just reads like the kind of guy that doesn't make a statistical push until his contract year (which is 2010).

8/22 vs Lions

Most of the time Kam lined up at LOLB. I think he lined up as the RE/ROLB 2 or 3 times, mainly in some non base sets I believe.

The positive thing about his run defense is that he was able to consistently set the edge and hold up at the point of attack, even coming off some blocks and making tackles. Most of the time he was up against RT Gosder Cherilus and/or TE Will Heller. The couple times that he went up against rookie TE Dan Gronkowski he got dealt with, which could be a bad sign.

I did notice him using some different moves, he had some quick inside stuff. They weren't really counter moves, just slips inside. He appeared to lower his shoulder and hit the blocker at times, which caused him to not see the ball on a couple occasions. I don't know what he was trying to do with this tactic, except maybe collapse a running lane, but it really wasn't effective in my mind. Mostly it was the type of hit you see a linebacker use to blow up a fullback, but he was doing it against a RT who was set in front of him. He made one pass rush play where he got the blocker to lean outside then he tried to rip and counter back inside, but wasn't strong enough to move him. This is what I want to see from him, his speed and functional strength should be good enough to win one on ones pass rushes if he gets an average lineman off balance.

His coverage skills still disappoint in that he is rarely in position to shadow properly and his jam isn't that physical. He is fast in the open field, but in traffic he seems to be running at 90% as if he can't diagnose the things around him quick enough.

Overall I thought this game was a big improvement for him, because he wasn't getting blown off the ball and actually did his job at the point of attack. I think he even got 1 or 2 hits on the QB, no sacks though. The hits he got were mainly because he was the free man on blitzes. I don't think his quickness at the snap was very impressive, he needs to improve on this so he can get that bend around the edge of the pocket.

The question I have is does he continue to improve and I also wonder if much of his success in this game was due in part to the guys he was up against. Next week will be a big test for him against Tennessee. If Michael Otto starts in place of Stewart at RT Kam should light him up, he's got a very suspect outside shoulder. If he doesn't play well against Otto I think it would be a step backwards, a healthy Stewart will probably drive him into the ground though. It'll be interesting either way, and throw in some work against Alge too.

I genuinely saw some improvement fundamentally, although many areas of his technique need work to allow his raw athleticism shine through. A red flag in my mind would be a regression in the things he has improved on. I expect him to continue to make mistakes, the key is that he can't keep making the same mistakes.

One other point that might be worth noting is that the Browns RTs looked terrible to me. I assume he gets plenty of work against St. Clair, Foster, and Tucker. So I would take camp reports with some caution unless they talk about who he is matched up against. I respect Ryan Tucker, but he's just not back from injury and that's clear. St. Clair and Foster seem so sloppy and aren't complete packages. I don't even know what the Wimbley reports from camp are like, I'm just saying the RT situation is a real weak link on an otherwise very good line.

I didn't see all of Alex Hall's snaps. It seemed like he didn't play that much, but he was in early and seems to play with better leverage than Kam. He was able to hold up at the point and make a nice tackle, that's about all I remember about his game good or bad.

He has 3 sacks and doing ok in the tackle column too. We play 3 LBs and 1 OLB. Does he play all 3 downs???

I have Clint Session and was thinking about dropping him for Wimbley. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts on Michael Boley also?

i have boley and session. session seems to get tackles but that's it. boley gets tackles too but chips in with other stuff too.

So in the last 3 weeks Wimbley has now gone 5-0-1, 5-2-1, and 5-6-1. He looking pretty darn good and two of those games were against the Ravens and Bengals. He really hasn't had a poor game yet this season. Will this continue? The Browns offense should help out by keep him on the field plenty, but will they get behind too often to limit his pass rushing opportunities?

Looking ahead to the fantasy playoffs, you have to like his chances: Steelers, @Chiefs, Raiders (and Jags in week 17). Can someone talk me out of dropping DeMeco Ryans (who I've held on to for 4 seasons now) to pick this guy up?

hes looking great in big play leagues
I am new to IDP...here is our league scoring....Solo tackles: 1Assisted tackles: 0.5Sacks: 4Half Sacks: 2Pass Defensed: 1Interceptions: 4INT TDs: 6Forced Fumbles: 2Fumble Recoveries: 2Fumble TDs: 6Safeties: 4Would this be considered a big play league? I just picked up Wimbley and almost started him against the Bills. He seems like a player that can get about 10 - 12 points a game with a combination of tackles and sack points. I believe I read somewhere that sacks to tackles at 4 to 1 would be considered big play. Thoughts.

Jene,

I would love to hear your thoughts concerning Wimbley in a league that awards 1.5 per tackles, 0.5 per assist, and 5 per sack. Could you guys possibly touch on this in the IDP roundtable? I'd hate to drop DeMeco, but my patience is wearing thin and it is starting to look like a repeat of the last couple of seasons for him.

Big Ben likes to hold the ball a little too long, this might be a good start for Kim
:yucky: Can't agree more. I think he's a great play this week. I've had him rostered for 3 weeks now, mostly because our league has him listed as a DE and that really bumps his value IMO.

I have demeco and wimbley but i think wimbley is going to be my trade bait and here is why.

1. Bad teams (cleveland you can't deny it) go down early and teams run the ball so the mlb gets the tackles hense jackson in cleveland second in the league in tackles. If cleveland is getting killed no sacks for wimbley.

2. I have had ryans since rookie year and yes he makes me mad but he still gets his. He will end up with more tackles then wimbley and a pic so he will be ok. Ryans is more of a consistent lb not a outside 25 then 5 week that is why he is valuable. Down year for Vilma so far and that is because teams are down to fast against the saints.

3. Wimbley and his shoulder problem. We start 4lbs in our league he is my 5 slash 6 (Ryans,Durrant,Poz,Hayes,Sims,Wimbley) once my squad is healthy.

I like both guys and yes ryans has injury problems but he makes the team he is houstons defense. Plus i am in a keeper league and he is still young enough to hold on to.

Good stuff in the IDP roundtable this week on Wimbley. Thanks guys! I'm considering starting him over Durant or Ryans as both are banged up this week.
