Karen - The Movie (1 Viewer)

In near-future American society that reaches a kind of racial détente, a film like Karen would be enjoyed ironically as a cult classic.

So far, it's unclear whether or not the filmmakers were going for raw parody. But going by the trailer (which could be unreliable), that's what they ended up with.

It would seem that people wouldn't take this seriously, and/or realize that this is an extreme stereotype.......but there are a lot of dumb, and excitable folks in this country just looking for more reason to be fired up.....and so it goes

 
The Director and Star's comments about the movie...

“Last year during the global pandemic and civil unrest, I — like many of us — felt anger, despair and hopelessness. The overwhelming amount of support from people around the globe, who want to see change, has been such an inspiration,” said Daniels.

“I felt a social responsibility to take on this role. Even if I had to play the villain to affect change around the globe, then I was more than willing to step into the role. What’s been going on is devastating. It’s time for change and for me to be a part of the bigger picture, meant a lot to me,” added Manning.

Almost makes me want to have BET.  

But come on, they couldn't even give her the proper Karen haircut? 

 
Not going to attempt to put words in Max's mouth, so my attempt at actual discussion is: 

Isn't this a natural extension and chessy/low budget, 0 subtlety, made for cable version of what movies like Us and Get Out were going for and were insanely popular?

The preview is full of classic dog whistle false racial stereotypes that are marketed to draw in a target audience.  Since I am an open minded non racist person, the preview does not resonate with me. Others that get joy and entertainment from such racial stereotyping and terrible acting obviously think differently.  To each their own.

I'm not an expert on racism, but the bolded is certainly true.  I'd even remove the word false to eliminate any need for argument around that...its still bad.

Yes, I am guessing they are trying to make a thinly veiled point.  

Like I said, I think it's a natural extension of J.Peele movies (admittedly it looks like it lacks all the subtlety).  Something hits, gers kudos, and then the cheap carbon copies get green lit.

I don't care what reasoning you provide to justify it.  I don't care that its "their right" to make the movie.  It's unhealthy and I don't have any interest in defending it.

I'd say the same if LaShonda came out tomorrow and was full of stupid stereotypes.  Would your first reaction be to say its just an extension of New Jack City or something like that.

FWIW I thought "get out" was good and personally it didn't cross a line...I like to think I give a pretty wide birth to artistic license and humor.

But Get Out also had stereotypes about white people too, right? 

I get it, I give a very wide birth for movies and music.  I doubt many are going to watch this POS.

Yah as with everything in life there is not clear definition or rule but I'd hope there's a lot of obvious.  Get Out didn't reflect well on white peeps.  Neither did Django Unchained as an example...a good deal worse.  I wouldn't say "neither of those should be created".  I wouldn't say a movie that specifically is a story about slavery shouldn't be created.  I wouldn't say New Jack City shouldn't be created.  For all of those titled movies...I didn't go in or come away thinking "the intent here was to demean a gender, race, religion".  I don't have to watch "Karen" to know its intent...and thats coming from someone who "despises" Karens.

What I mean by unhealthy is that people think based on what they watch, what they read, and what is repeatedly put into their heads.  There are a lot of people right now with burning fires in their heads around "racism, sexism, genderism" and as you point out there are a lot of people looking to make money off those fires and to pour gasoline on them.  I don't have the stats handy but have shared them here before...its why so many black people think police kill 1,000+ unarmed black men every year...when the number is like 15.  Its why so many white liberals think the same.  Its why "Hands Up Don't Shoot" became a thing with Michael Brown.  Its why a lot of people think liberals hate our country.

Thats why its unhealthy and it should be obvious.  Media.  Social media, news media, movies, shows.  Unhealthy.

imo the people who think this way don't need a crappy fictional movie to feel this way.  people who don't feel this way probably won't bother watching the movie or I have enough faith in humanity that this won't turn them.  

Dude, most in these boards joke about and don't like "Karens".  A reason this movie looks even dumber is being a Karen has nothing to do with not liking black people.  

 
and to your point DJ, if I'd have to guess I don't think Max stumbled on this trailer while browsing the fall movie releases.  I'd guess SM or a website came into play along with some "omg look at this racist movie" type of messages.

Why do you think people already "feel this way" or "don't feel this way"?  They are born that way? 

They are developed by the environment around them.  A few really big factors in that development....to name two...  Parents, which in aggregate are slipping in todays society in terms of influence and particularly the presence of both parents.  Offsetting the parent gap is social media.

So no this singular movie is not the tsunami, it is a few gallons in a tidal wave.  When I see something that might drown me, I don't get too hung up on which gallon of water will be the final wash down by throat....I fairly easily identify it all as "unhealthy" and I understand that it is all working together.

You are trying too hard to reframe my position.   you yourself said this was targeted for a certain people.  I agree, and some of those people might be people that already think think is prevalent.  this dumb movie isn't changing that.   people that don't like the obvious message probably aren't watching this anyway.  

it's a big nothing burger in the scheme things for those reasons.  plus, it's fiction and it's not trying to hide that fact.   

of all the things you listed- parents, environment, experiences, SM, news, etc.   some crappy BET movie isn't even a blip on the radar.  it's a movie.
