Karlos Dansby (1 Viewer)

Several weeks ago, I read something (probably here on FBG) about how Karlos Dansby was going to fill the Patrick Willis role in Mike Nolan's defense in Miami. In the "going forward" rankings, Dansby has been behind only Willis for the past few weeks (possibly just for my league's tackle-heavy scoring system, but our system is pretty standard).

Yet Dansby has been a pretty big disappointment this year. He's not racking up the tackles. He's not making the big plays he has made in past years. He had 4 solos (and nothing else) yesterday and 5 solos (again, nothing else) the game before.

I know he hurt his knee yesterday, but that was very late in the game and didn't cause the 4 solo performance. He seems like he'll be fine to play this week, but can I be confident starting him?

I put a lot of faith in the FBG rankings, but I just don't understand why Dansby continues to be rated so highly. Is he about to break out or is it time to bench him?

Miami seems to run the ball a lot which eats a lot of clock. Eating a lot of clock leads to shorter games and less defensive plays/opportunity. That would be my rationale.

1. Miami is a run team (as the poster above said) and eats up clock.

2. Last week GB was a horrible matchup because they don't run the ball.

3. The Miami home scorekeeper is very stingy with assists. (6.5 per game for the Phins at home) And GB's scorekeeper was very stingy with the Dolphins and only credited 5 assists to the Phins.

4. Last year Dansby had 109 tackles, 1 sack, 1 int, 1 ff, 4 pd. Through 5 games this year he is on pace for 109 tackles and 3 pd. And he already has 1 sack. So he is pretty much right on schedule to were he was a year ago.

That likely would have been me. I pimped Dansby as a top ten linebacker with upside for nearly the entire offseason. It's got me flummoxed, too. The tackle opportunity hasn't been great, but it's not been consistently below average. There's no talent issue or problem with the role in the scheme. The Dolphins front seven has played well and there's been no unexpected competition for tackles. I don't like the pace at all, but I think it's at least a little reassuring that Dansby is Miami's second leading tackler and has three quarterback hits, a sack and has made a number of plays around the line of scrimmage.

The odds may be against me now, but I'm still holding out hope that much better times are ahead.
