Katrina (2 Viewers)

The officials seem to be doing the best thing right now - get everyone they can the f out, and wait until the breached levees reach an equilibrium with the water, and then go in and start repairing. Nothing else is going to happen until the levees get repaired, and you cannot repair a levee while water is still moving/rising.

Get out, wait, figure out where to start. Sad state of affairs when that's the best option.
agreed. It's a damn shame about all these people who were too ignorant to not leave. Resources are being wasted on them instead of the people who really had no choice.
I thought it was determined that some of those people didn't have any means to leave the city.

HOLY ####

ALL RESIDENTS ON THE EAST BANK OF ORLEANS AND JEFFERSON REMAINING IN THE METRO AREA ARE BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE AS EFFORTS TO SANDBAG THE LEVEE BREAK HAVE ENDED. THE PUMPS IN THAT AREA ARE EXPECTED TO FAIL SOON AND 12-15 FEET OF WATER ARE EXPECTED IN THE ENTIRE EAST BANK

LINK
Just saw Nagin talking about the sandbag situation not working. Apparently, it never started to begin with. He didn't know why and didn't appear to happy about it. He said that levee would be breeched tonight and the and at least another 9 ft is expected to cover that part of town. This is getting exponentially worse. :(

This is going to be a huge humanatarian crisis. I hate to say this but there seems to be some lack of orginazation on the part of the decesion makers. Most of New Orleans is going to flood and yet there is no public plan of what they are going to do. The Superdome evacuation should have started today. The levees should have been dealt with today. Time is of the essence, and we need some folks to start making some hard decesions.I have witnessed and been in a few natural disasters in my time, and I know how difficult it can be for officials to always make the right decesion. I hate to be critical, but I would rather see someone making the wrong decesion instead of no decesion at all.

Just gave $1000 to the Red Cross. I know it isn't much in this humanitarian crisis, but its all I can afford right now. GB everyone affected by this horrible disaster.

Here is a list of blogs on the hurricane. There is one from Slidell for those who were asking. I have not read through many of them so I am not sure how good they are.

EDIT: The Flickr link has 2,000 pics linked in.
Thank you Philly Sports dude for that link.I was able to call my Dad and read some of the Slidell blogs to him. He is in Baton Rogue now. One of the bloggers actually described how he got into a subdivision there, the same one my Dad lives in. When the blogger arrived, he was able to make a land line call. My Dad is relieved and may try to get home in the next few days.

Thanks PSD!

Just made it out of the city. In Baton Rouge at a washateria weighing my optionsIt's not a pretty site.Had to abadon the resteraunt b/c the front of the brick building collasped crushing 7 vehicles. Mine was parked elsewhere. The entire city is blacked out as well as the surrounding areas.St. Bernard/Lower 9th ward is under 12ft of water. As well as the Gentilly area and Lakeview. My house in University City is inaccessable. Don't know what condition it's in.The law enforcement/emergency workers are all working on one communication channel due to the cell phone network failure. It's bad.

for anyone who doesn't know - http://www.wwltv.com/perl/common/video/wmP...&props=livenoad

is the local feed - absolutely horrifying
For anyone not wathcing this - put this on now
Listening to the press conference now. Talking about working with hotels to be sure people do not get gouged and give discounts. How can they even charge people now? Sad.
They are going to have to pay the people that work for them so they have to charge. Hopefully they will discount dramatically.

I hope everyone here will give. Whether its $1 or $100,000, every little bit helps. We all have extra money we can spare. How about we help those that are in need? How about all the people that complained when we gave to the tsunami victims? Those who said, "We need to take care of USA first", etc. Well....here's your chance. Take care of others that through no fault of their own, are in a truly humanitarian disaster.

Tipsy, add me to your restuarant list. Whereever you open it whether you re-open in NO or elsewhere. You can count on me making a trek to support you.Peace.

Headed out. My hour's up here and my clothes are done. Gonna try to hunt down a friend here in BRPray for eveyone down here.

this is f'n crazy can't imagine a big city being shut down for weeks
i seriously think weeks is a lowball estimate if it hits this hard. Seriously, this storm could make NO uninhabitable for months & possible leave it in such bad shape, nobody will move back.

Just got an email from a college friend who lives in slidell. Said he and his wife evacuated, but her parents didn't :( and they haven't heard anything from them since. Anyone know if there is any information specifically on slidell, as he's scouring the net for information?

No deaths reported in Slidell.

Just found out my uncle didn't evacuate NO. He has a mild schizoid disorder - not exactly a survivor-type.He lives on Esplanade near the racetrack. Any info on that area?

12:15 p.m.: Looting Continues Throughout City

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter this morning, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers. When police finally showed up, a young boy stood at the door and shouted a warning, and the crowd scattered.

A tourist from Philadelphia compared the scene to "downtown Baghdad."

Nearby, looters ripped open the steel gates from the front of stores on Canal Street. They filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation. -- Associated Press
While New Orleans has so much charm, it unfortunately has this subhuman underbelly. Just more proof that Darwin's theory is not extensive enough. I have seen the footage. As someone on TV described, most of the looters are acting like its Christmas.

I can understand it for food and water. But according to TV footage, those things are being stolen in small numbers.

What the #### are you doing stealing a TV? You can't use it, since there is no electricity, and no one can buy it. Barbarians.

Smoo, I nominate that these people are put at the top of the extermination list.

At this point, everything in those stores may be as good as useless if the flooding continues....if these supplies help keep these people alive then theyre doing what they have to do....Being in the same situation, I might do the same...If youve lost everything, youll do what you have to do to survive...The coverage and footage of this disaster is horrific and surreal as the 9/11 attacks.

Words just cant describe it.
Wingnut, for basic human neccessities as food and water I can understand. But not anything else. It is barbaric. They are the lowest forms of human life.

Recovery will take so long, he said, that some workers could spend their entire career working on Katrina. "This is the most significant natural disaster to hit the United States," Lokey said. ..They will eventually end up in the Superdome, where he estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people already have taken refuge and where rising water is threatening the generators. Among the evacuees are 5,000 inmates from New Orleans and suburbs that need to be moved. Officials were trying to figure out how. ...Blanco asked residents to spend Wednesday in prayer. "That would be the best thing to calm our spirits and thank our Lord that we are survivors," she said. "Slowly, gradually, we will recover; we will survive; we will rebuild."

Just as an aside I am really upset about the big 3 networks coverage of this. All major networks here in Colorado are just acting like business as usual and the regular shows are on here in prime time. No offense but America's Shocking Videos or Something About Raymond can be shown sometime else. We need news coverage of this on now in prime time on the networks and something else besides cable. My wife got home today from her school job and had no idea how bad it was there because the radio isn't even mentioning it. This is a huge disaster and we need to start getting the people of the US mobilized. I also worry that the cable networks are really focussing on the looting and I am wondering the effect that will have on the amount of money people will donate. People tend to say, "Hey if they are stealing, screw them, I am not giving money to help people if they are going to do that." I just think they need to downplay that angle a bit--to me there are enough other things they can cover.Sorry just a few things that have bugged me since I got home tonight.

Let's keep in mind that people are stealing what they need to survive. Hardly TVs.
I suggest you are not seeing what I am seeing. Jewelry and clothing stores are being raided all along Canal Street. If you have an infant, and I can understand diapers being classified as a human neccessity. But adults stealing clothes???? Oh come on...

SLIDELL ?? Any news on Slidell? tv networks don't know anything, and I don't see anything on wdsu.com
Hey 2112! I just heard from a friend of mine that their house in eastern Slidell, off Military Road is fine. A few broken shingles, but the roof is not leaking any water. It seems to be the case throughout several of the subdivisions in that area.

Stealing clothes and material things isn't the biggest issue, they're hijacking cars from people who are leaving town, some are shooting at others, a cop has been shot by looters. I read somewhere that most people are just ignoring the looting for now because saving the human lives is more important. Let them take the stuff, what are they gonna do with it over the next few days? Water, food and shelter are the most valuable things there now.

yikes... someone posted this on NOLA.com

CNN is reporting people jumping from the upper deck of the Superdome. Mass chaos inside with water now flooding the entire city. Gulf of Mexico can not be stopped. CNN saying there may be sixty feet of water in NOLA by six pm.
(sixty feet, is that accurate??, i only thought i was tops 8 ft below sealevel)
The entrance paths to thedome lead to a mezzanine which is where access is. If he jumped from that mezzanine, that could be sixty feet. I would have guessed 40 feet, but it could be 60.

Lookk up the page, there is a link I posted to a blog on Slidell.

Even if you steal what you need to survive, the law will still come down against you.  I remember this buddy of mine who stole a loaf of bread and some candlesticks during the French Revolution.  He got busted and was pursued for the rest of his life by a meddling detective named Javert.  despite his subsequent rise to prominence, the crimes of his past came back to haunt him.
Who is this man? What sort of devil is heTo have me caught in a trap and choose to let me go free?

It was his hour at last to put a seal on my fate

Wipe out the past and watch me clean off the slate

All it would take was a flick of his knife

Vengeance was his and he gave me back my liiiiife.....
Ahh...thanks for the entertainment. Les Mis always lifts my spirits.

I'm sorry. I don't understand what you're saying here. Can you elaborate?J

The footage on CNN of the man (Harvey Jackson) whose house split in half and he lost his wife was heartbraking and one of the saddest things Ive ever seen....
I agree. That brought tears to my eyes. So did the reporter.

I do not condone looting. But, consider that much of the stuff is going to be submerged. Just a foot or 2 of water in a clothing store will ruin the clothes on the racks, 6-9 feet or more of water is going to destroy most of the stuff in the stores. I think the police and guard are better used focusing on rescuing people and getting in the needed supplies.

There was lots of wind damage to the racetrack. And honestely nothing looks good at this point.

btw saw on Foxnews ten mins ago that there was 9" flooding in the French Quarter, but

a) not serious damage considering other parts are under 10 ft.

b) sounds strange since FQ is above sea level.

{:-\
How is FQ above sea level? Or is it above sea level but below lake level?Im confused
I didn't think it was either. FQ is also below sea level, just higher than most places in the cityl.

How is FEMA handling food distribution?

J
I don't think they've said yet. They've only rescued 3000 people so far. I know the Coast Guard brought it MREs to the Superdome - but now they are evacuating the Superdome - so I don't know where they are bringing people

On CNN, Mayor Nagin just said the people will be at the Superdome for another week!! :(

Stunnning video on MSNBC - police taking part in the looting. Reporter asked a female cop what she was doing. Police responded "You're in the store""But I'm not taking anything""But you're in the store"This is awful
