KC QB Cassel Misses Practice (1 Viewer)

Matt Cassel Has 'Illness'; Chiefs' Todd Haley Not Saying Much

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel missed practice on Wednesday with what will be called an "illness" on the official injury report submitted to the league. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley addressed the situation at his Wednesday press conference (audio via 810 WHB).

"We'll put the injury report out and he'll show up as illness and that's as far as Ill go on that. But like I said this time of year nobody feels 100 percent and that's why we're working as hard as we do. It's so important to continue to have everyone ready at all times and today I thought we had a fairly crisp Wednesday practice. We were in pads for a good portion of it and then out of pads in the back end of it."

OK, so will he be back on Thursday?

"He'll be on the injury report as illness today and then we'll just take it from there as we do all injuries."

OK, so does he have to practice to play?

"I appreciate and understand the position [of the Matt Cassel questions] but I'm not going to get into it. Philosophically, we need our guys to practice, we have to practice to play. That's my policy, our policy. And then how much practice they need to have to play is determined by me ultimately and whether we think our guys are already to go."

But....

"That being said, I feel like we've really become efficient offensively, defensively and special teams and we've resisted the urge to do a whole bunch. We're doing less more and that always helps the guys because they're getting multiple reps in the same place."

The Chiefs also signed a third quarterback -- Tyler Palko -- from the practice squad on the same day Cassel missed practice. The timing of it all is a "coincidence", Haley says.

"No, it's actually a coincidence. It really is. We had to make a move in another area and so somebody...we were able to get somebody up and that determination was made -- it's actually a total coincidence. I said it's illness and that's what it is."

Love this from Haley on bringing up the practice squad QB today.

Joe, can you share where you are hearing it has anything to do with appendix?

Hi PH, it's a guy that would prefer not to go on the record. So for me, that makes it pure rumor. Now lots of times, that's how these things start off. If a guy really does have an appendectomy, the team doesn't immediately call a press conference. It leaks out over the course of a few hours. From a guy working at the hospital to his buddy that's into FF to a guy that sends it to me to a guy like Adam Schefter or Jay Glazer getting the full story. If I had to put a guess on odds this is true, I'd say 25%. We know for a fact he's got an "illness" and we know for a fact they signed the #3 QB from the practice squad. Those all fit. But it could be that he really is just sick and that Palko's signing was a coincidence as Haley says. All I want you guys to do is have it on the radar and be thinking about it if Cassel is your guy or if you have a guy in your league that depends on Cassel and you can get something of value out of him in a trade for a QB you can give up.We'll know soon. 810whb here in Kansas City just reported that Cassel had an appendectomy today.

www.810whb.com - and they are talking about NBA now.

610sports.com - talking about it now.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel underwent an appendectomy this morning, according to a league source. Big question mark for Sunday now.

confirmed appendectomy. Chiefs expect him to be ready to play.

Crazy, but not out of the question.

I missed a game in college when I had an emergency appendectomy and I was back kicking the next week with very little pain.

However, being a QB is a little different.

Appendectomy via laproscopic surgery per Schefter.
That's thru the navel, right?
That's the largest incision yes. However, there are at least two other ones used for a camera and a grasping/dissection tool. The worst part of the surgery to recover from is the pain in your abdomen. Your gut is inflated with C02 in order to give the surgeon room to work. Basically feels like the worst ab workout routine x 10. Doubt he'll play this week though. GDB having to roll with Brodie.

How much does this hurt the passing game and running game?Bump SD DST vs. KC this week?
I think it goes without saying that it hurts Bowe, Moeaki, etc. However, I think you maybe bump Thomas Jones. I know they played week 1 in a driving rainstorm most of the night, but don't forget that Cassel only threw for 68 yards in a KC win.

I think you slightly downgrade the entire KC offensive team.

I also think you might downgrade Phillip Rivers for this weekend as the threat of KC putting up a lot of points may not be there. If KC can't score, you won't see SD winging the ball around in the 2nd half, where Rivers often puts up a lot of his numbers.

As a Phillip Rivers owners in 3 leagues, I would much rather have Cassel playing this weekend that not, bummer.

Your gonna have to rethink your percentages on the "guy that would prefer not to go on the record" going forward.

I don't think this hurts KC passing game that much. I never thought Cassel was that great of a QB.

Also, why does KC/Haley say that he won't miss the game? Does he REALLY expect people to believe him or fool the other team? Dumb.

So this Haley is just a flat out liar?

How much does this downgrade Charles? Last year Cassel sucked and Charles was awesome anyway.

I heard an interview on NFL network today and he said this type of surgery is not that bad and as long as he isn't in pain he should be able to play. Truly bad timing for me with Bowe and Charles my main guys that have taken me into the playoffs.

I think this helps Charles and hurts TJones. Charles is clearly the better back, and the Chiefs will lean on him more if Cassel is out.
