Friday Sleeper Tip: Cincinnati WR Kenbrell Thompkins

I’m wrapping up my film study for the 2013 Rookie Scouting Portfolio this month. I watch multiple games of almost every player I study and I try to document at least 2-3 of those views for the publication so my readers can have play-by-play notes that shows the work behind the analysis. Yesterday morning, I watched another game of University of Cincinnati runner George Winn and tight end Travis Kelce. It was Thompkins who caught my eye the most – as did his story.

Thompkins is the cousin of Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown and the brother Kendall, a University of Miami wideout. When Kenbrell saw Kendall earning opportunities to go to college, he decided to ditch his life headed down a path of crime for football. Sports Illustrated’s Michael McKnight does a fine job of reporting Thompkins’ transition from drug dealer to JUCO star, leader, and in my opinion, late-round or UDFA sleeper.

I’m a fan of Thompkins because he’s not just a fine athlete with quickness, leaping ability, and fluid skill around the ball. The Bearcats receiver clearly works at his craft. I can see it with the way he runs routes. Just like Marvin Jones, he can hold a defender in suspense with his route running and plays bigger than his 190-pound frame indicates.

The practice tape has a pre-Goodell-smackdown quality to it, but it demonstrates a lot of refinement with routes:

• Sinking hips to generate hard, sudden breaks.
• Setting up breaks and releases with the chattering of feet and drumming of arms.
• The ability to dip the shoulder under contact at the line of scrimmage.
• Integration of feet and hands to gain a release.
• Suddenness to double moves.
• Flat breaks to prevent trailing coverage from undercutting the target.

When the ball arrives, Thompkins is fluid at turning to the ball in tight spaces between a defender and the boundary and extending his arms to catch the ball. This practice compilation shows a lot of what I’ve seen in games – and a little more, because the quarterback play hasn’t been stellar in Cincinnati this year.

Plus, whenever I watch a wide receiver focus on details most prospects don’t address – such as engaging defenders 10-15 yards away from the ball as a blocker with good technique until the whistle blows – it’s a good indication the prospect is serious about getting better and not just leaning on his athleticism. The 2013 class is a deep one, but talent-wise Thompkins is a guy I’d remember if you’re a fantasy owner in a deep league monitoring the summer waiver wire for buzz-worthy candidates. Opportunity is a different story.

Rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins was one of the bright spots in the Patriots' 40-9 loss to the Lions. One of the more impressive parts of his performance was his ability to get off the line of scrimmage and win early in his route.

We saw it specifically on two plays:

1. A 37-yard catch down the left sideline in the first quarter, with rookieDarius Slay (second round pick, Mississippi State) in coverage.

2. A 27-yard catch down the right sideline in the second quarter, with veteran Chris Houston (7th year, 79 career regular-season starts) in coverage.

Those are two pretty solid cornerbacks -- one highly touted in the draft, the other a solid veteran who has been around the block and knows some tricks of the trade.

To see an undrafted free agent win so decisively in those matchups, specifically at the line of scrimmage, was notable.

This was a topic that was brought up to Bill Belichick during his regular day-after-game conference call. Had the Patriots seen that ability from Thompkins when scouting him, or is it something that has developed since he arrived?

"I think that's an area that all rookie receivers need to work on and haven't had a lot of experience with; there isn't a whole lot of press coverage in college," Belichick answered. "There are a couple of teams that do it, but there's not a whole lot of them. So that's something that every receiver needs a lot of work on. I would say the same thing with the defensive backs."

As for the skills that Thompkins has shown to be successful in that area, Belichick didn't necessarily want to start getting into superlatives. After all, it was just one preseason game.

The point he made was that the challenge for a player like Thompkins will vary on a week to week basis.

"We'll have to see how that goes. He made a couple nice plays last night, but working against different corners with different skill sets is going to match up individually, whether it's quickness or speed, or size, or whatever it happens to be, technique. There are different ways to win out there. They may not be all the same, depending on who the opponent is that he's facing or the technique that they're playing. So that's why players have to be good at more than one thing, or have more than one skill, or eventually that one thing gets shut down by a particular technique or a certain type of player. Then the player loses his effectiveness.

"For KT, he just needs to work on the whole process out there, against different guys, and different techniques, and being able to deal with whatever the challenges he faces on the perimeter, be it the individual player or the technique that the guy is playing."

Bad wouldn’t begin to describe the Patriots’ performance on the whole on Thursday night, but Tom Brady still found a way to give it a silver lining. Four turnovers from the first-team offense, including a Brady interception and a trio of fumbles, highlighted the night’s offensive woes. Yet, Brady, who only played the first half, still managed to put a positive spin on the effort. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 185 yards, including that second-quarter pick, on nine drives. But, well beyond the somewhat pedestrian — at least for Brady — stats was the continued development between he and rookie receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson. Thompkins, who’s been a constant fixture throughout the preseason, enjoyed a breakout performance in the game, catching eight passes for 116 yards and consistently making the Lions’ top corner combo, Chris Houston and Darius Slay, look like chumps on the outside. His connection with Brady has been developing all preseason, as No. 12 has looked his way often in each of New England’s three games, and it finally seemed to come to a head in Detroit. With Danny Amendola out, someone in the Patriots’ receiving corps was going to have to step up, and Thompkins was that guy. Brady hooked up with Thompkins six times for 93 yards in the game, looking the rookie’s way on nine of his 24 passes and even connecting with him on a sweet 37-yard pitch-and-catch over the top of Slay for the Patriots’ play of the night. Thompkins was reliable with his hands, barring one inexcusable drop, ran clean and precise routes and even worked well getting off press coverage at the line. He excelled in pretty much every facet of the game, aside from blocking, where he still needs to take better angles in the running game. Even still, you can say with most definite conviction that Thompkins is the Patriots’ No. 2 receiver, behind Amendola, heading into the season. That No. 2 receiver role was originally expected to fall to Patriots second-round pick Aaron Dobson rather than the undrafted Thompkins, but clearly things in the NFL can change quickly. After an underwhelming preseason on the whole, Dobson had easily the best performance of his young NFL career on Thursday. He caught four passes for 50 yards, including three for 37 yards from Brady. Dobson is still having trouble breaking off of press coverage at the line, which could be plainly seen on a fourth-down pass to the goal line from Ryan Mallett late in the game. He also struggled to create any real separation out in space yet again on Thursday. Dobson continues to run tight, crisp routes on the outside, but he still seems to have issues exerting his strength or speed to help create space. Even while Dobson clearly has some deficiencies at this point, his chemistry with Brady is clearly growing with each passing week. Brady was able to connect with him on some well-timed comeback routes, which is a good sign for the highly anticipated rookie heading into the final week of the preseason. With a little over one week left until roster cutdowns, there’s no question that the Patriots have some work left to do before Bill Belichick will be fully comfortable trotting his offense out there and expecting mistake-free football. But, in the meantime at least, Brady’s development with Dobson — and, to a much greater extent, Thompkins — are encouraging signs that the good times aren’t too far off in the distance.

It is huge news. He's poised to have the rookie season that I thought Boyce might. 500-900 yards with possible WR3/flex value.

I didn't take him seriously at any point because his background is so desolate. Morris was a late pick, but at least he was a dominant college player. Cruz was a UDFA, but at least he was a small school guy and a standout athlete. Foster was a UDFA, but at various points in his college career he was thought to be a mid round NFL prospect. Thompkins just looked like a typical camp body. No college success. Undrafted. Solid, but not amazing tools. There's nothing there except the buzz itself.

The lesson here is to keep an open mind and pay attention to the practices. The tea leaves matter and whenever a rookie ascends up the depth chart, you have to stand up and take notice, even if there doesn't appear to be any fire behind the smoke. Every season brings at least one of these guys who comes out of left field and defies expectations. Thompkins has to be on the short list of 2013 candidates at this point.

Pretty decent odds on the Thompkins end of that. The best Jets' receiver in the past 5 years combined went for 904 yds, with no other receiver over 900 in that time frame. Not a lot about the NY QB situation showing any reason why that would change this year.

I don't know if you read news about pro football, but some things have changed since I offered that bet. If you want to pick a fight with some random person on the internet, that's fine.... just go find someone else.

Thompkins, future 2nd (likely mid round), future 3rd (likely early)

for

Future 1st (same owner as the 2nd I dealt, so likely mid round)

I'm stacked at WR with Megatron, Marshall, D. Thomas, Fitz, Miles Austin and Gordon and crunched for Roster space so I couldn't pass it up. Last year this guy's 1st was 1.07.

ETA: Dynasty league, 22 man rosters.

With all the talk of his value and draft position I'm surprised the trade I posted didn't get more play, as its one of the only trades for him that have been posted since games have been played. I couldn't pass up getting this kind of value for a WW pickup that was an UDFA, but if people are taking him in dynasty drafts over guys like Austin and Patterson, maybe I didn't get as much as I could have.

If I had Thompkins in ten leagues I'd do this same trade in seven of them. It would be nice to hold him and see how things go, but when I can cash in a WW pickup who lacks in elite qualities for a future 1st I'll do it almost every time.

The hype is insane. Was in a 20 team dynasty draft this morning and he went 6th, ahead of Austin and Patterson.

I could see that. When it comes to rookie WRs, there's a good argument that "Brady and Belicheck like you" puts you ahead of all but the most elite talents.

I wouldn't take him above Austin, for me it's been Austin going first in drafts this summer. I still have issues with he and Cook maybe splitting Amendola's/Clayton's targets on those same types of routes. I'd like to see a game where they both get enough catches or line up outside.

Patterson has concerned me. I don't think much of the Vikings WR corp and here we are getting near the season and he still hasn't caught a ball from Ponder in a game nor beat out Simpson for his spot. I don't know if "all the talent he has" Patterson is wrong at 6th; I'm not saying that, I just wish he'd done more at this point.

The other two rookie WRs (and Sudfeld even) with the Pats concern me about KT for long term value so 6th seems too high for me. He has to increase his distance over the other rooks. The little things he's done to seem like a veteran are great and he needs to do more of those to make him irreplaceable. Right now he's a bad game away from "let's see how (Dobson or Boyce) look in that role." We'll notice. All the articles context will shift to Boyce and Dobson opposite him and no longer mention replacing him.

The best thing going for KT, over those two, is he did something in a preseason game stat wise and the rapport with the QB. Those guys don't have those two for FF folks to hang their hat on. It's hard to be in August still repeating stuff ya said in April without much evidence to support it.

It's been my experience in FF that thoroughbreds shine eventually. Sure there's situation like the Saints backfield where Ingram should be "the man" like Trent Richardson, ADP and whomever else was adored coming out of college. All in all though the thoroughbreds usually come thru so if I were drafting KT would have to be selected after every "name" in the first. Even if suppose you saw either Austin or Patterson and didn't like what you saw, still the other of those two goes before KT IMO.

Admittedly, I have not had success applying this thinking to situations like the one in TEN where there's three young(ish) WRs with a lot of talent, but if starting seems very doable, then I go with the "name" everytime.

For redraft- I'd predict Austin, KT, then Patterson but this was dynasty talk.

I don't know if you read news about pro football, but some things have changed since I offered that bet. If you want to pick a fight with some random person on the internet, that's fine.... just go find someone else.
