My wife and I saw KWS at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in MA last night, co-headlining with Jonny Lang. I haven't been so thoroughly impressed by an electric guitar player in a long time. The energy, passion, intensity and tone were off the charts. The band was tight, the singer (Noah) complimented Shepherd perfectly, and Chris Layton on drums was an awesome surprise. Not much talk, or buttering up the crowd, just a focused band intent on making their presence felt in a big way. Multiple standing ovations starting after just the second song. Kenny's playing, just so f'ing good. He almost seems to play with a chip on his shoulder, and I hope it never goes away. His incredible tone deserves to be in the discussion of the greatest guitar tones of all time. In fact, KWS deserves to be in the discussion of the greatest electric blues guitar player of all time. Yes, that good. My wife, who couldn't pick KWS out of a lineup prior to last night, was blown away and nearly moved to tears by one of Kenny's many breathtaking solos. Those that may have dismissed him as a SRV clone, or just a "young gun", need to put those tired misconceptions aside and go see KWS perform live with an open mind and open ears. KWS is a blues guitar master and is still getting better. I couldn't be more thrilled to be able to go along for this ride with KWS and look forward to many more nights of electric blues with a legend in the making.
What about Jonny Lang? My wife was originally more excited to see him. He played second. Poor guy. Suffice it to say that co-headlining this tour with KWS may just kill his career. My wife agrees wholeheartedly. We left in the middle of Jonny's set, as did others.
