Kerry Collins signs with Indy (1 Viewer)

Colts backups are awful. KFC is awful. This move wreaks of desperation and that doesn't bode well for Manning's prospects for at minimum week one.

The last time Manning missed the entire preseason he threw for 4002 yds 27 TD, 12INT on way to earning his third MVP. The Colts did start out slowly that year going 3-4 before ripping off 9 straight wins. In those first seven games Manning was definitely sub-par completing 171/275(62%) with 7TD and 12INT. Yet in the last nine he went 200/280(71%) 15TD and 0INT.
I heard Joe Montana talking about this situation on Mike and Mike this morning. When told that Manning hasn't even been able to throw in practice, he said not only would it take time from whenever he gets on the field to get timing down with his receivers, but also to get his throwing arm in shape. I thought the latter point was interesting, as I haven't really heard that discussed before. He said it would likely take at least a few weeks, maybe more than a month for Manning's arm to be up to where it normally is by this point in the preseason. He also said that there was one time when he was in a similar situation and rushed his comeback, which led to him tearing the tendon from the bone in his throwing arm.Not saying this means anything definitive for Manning, I just found it to be an interesting perspective.

Brett said, "let me get this straight, you want me to be a backup? I don't care who this Manning guy is I'm nobody's backup." ;)

If anything, Favre would say "Let me get this straight.....I get to personally stop Manning's consecutive-start streak? Where do I sign up?!"

The OL is not very good and Collins has a slow release.
Yea, this is going to be a huge issue behind that oline. While it has been apparent that the Colts oline sucks at run blocking, Manning's lightning quick release hides the fact that this isn't a a good pass blocking line either. I can see Collins getting killed behind that line. Finally, factor in that without Manning the Colts aren't just losing their qb, but also essentially their offensive coordinator too.
Does this bump Collie's and Clark's value if Manning misses more than a few games
I don't see how losing Manning helps anyone's fantasy value, except for the opposing defenses'.
Agreed but my point is they will still be throwing the ball; if Collins doesn't have the time does he just hit the underneath stuff and avoid an athletically gifted but weak receiver in Garçon?

I thought Joe said it so very well today in the email.

Ignoring Peyton's injury, Kerry is better than the other two backups and it's almost a rule that you need to have a veteran backup in the playoffs. KC can definitely do that and experience wise, not many NFL QBs have played in as many big games as he has.

Just a random thought on this whole situation (big picture). If Collins starts week 1, he and Addai are going to have a rough game. I would not be surprised to see either of them go down to injury. Good news for Delone Carter owners

just me speculating here, but IMO there is a chance that Peyton does not play at all in 2011. Neck injuries are nothing to sneeze at. Why not take the year off, and come back in 2012 for a final SB push?

If that happens, I think Indy would be a serious candidate in the "suck for Luck" race...how great would that be, to have Peyton mentor Luck, and be able to hand off the reigns in 2013 or 2014?

At the very least, I think Manning starts the season on the PUP and doesn't play until week 6.

But, I believe the issue that has extended this recovery time is the fact that Peyton was unable to receive treatment from team doctors until 1 month ago.
You believe that Mr Peyton Manning wouldn't have received proper treatment from some of the best doctors in America, instead waiting on team doctors? Ummm.. no?
Apparently in July Mr. Peyton Manning believed this as well. Peyton Manning: Without Team Training Staff, I'm Taking Rehab Slow

"I've had a couple of other surgeries in the past that I have rehabbed successfully with the Colts personnel, and that one thing that I think these owners didn’t take into account,” Manning said. “For a guy rehabbing, the fact that you can't use your training room or your trainer does provide some obstacles, so that’s been a challenge. I’ve been very, very cautious and I’ve been taking it slow because in some ways I’ve been on my own."

Though Manning has enlisted his own support staff to help him recover, he stressed the fact that the familiarity he had built up with the Colts’ staff is not something that can easily be replaced.

Peyton Manning says NFL lockout is having an adverse affect on his rehab

"It's one thing these owners didn't take into account, the guy rehabbing can't use your trainers or your training room,"

"It's really hard for me to give myself an evaluation," he said. "I really need my trainer and my doctors to get their hands on me and work with me."

Indianapolis Colts 2011 NFL Predictions

It will be very important to see how Manning comes back from the surgery, which has taken longer to heal due to the fact that during the lockout, players could not meet with team doctors or trainers to rehab their injuries. Manning was very upset about this, but like the true professional that he is, he will shake it off and play at the top of his game again in 2011.

Teams expect players to return as soon as lockout is lifted

Teams wants to administer physicals as soon as possible, especially to players that have had offseason procedures performed by surgeons other than team physicians. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning recently expressed concerns about his return from neck surgery because he has been unable to consult with team trainers and doctors because of lockout restrictions.

Peyton Manning: Lockout slowing rehab from neck surgery

"That's one thing these owners didn't take into account. You've got a guy rehabbing, and you can't use your training room and can't use your trainer," Manning said. "When you find a good trainer and a good rehab guy that you like, it's a pretty special bond. These guys kind of know your body. So the fact that I haven't had access to my guys and I've been somewhat on my own, I've been extra cautious and extra slow and making sure we don't have any setbacks."

Random Thoughts on the Lockout and Bears Training Camp

Without access to team doctors, why risk injury? A few weeks ago Peyton Manning (who’s recovering from offseason neck surgery) said he has been “very, very limited as to what I’ve been able to do and what I’ve allowed myself to do.” “The fact that I haven’t had access to my [team trainers]” who really know my body, “I’ve been extra cautious and extra slow.”

I think he plays during the season but I don't think he will play for the first couple of weeks. IMO, he's a mid-round pick now and you also need to reduce the value of his teammates as well.

Cover-ups and ploys. The injury is serious.

I think it means there's a high probability Manning isn't ready for week one. His surgery was over 3 months ago and was billed as "minimally invasive" with minimal recovery time. He's not even practicing yet. I think we're looking at a serious long-term problem. Maybe he misses half the season. Maybe he retires. I drafted Collie in a few leagues already and am pretty pissed.
If Manning struggles or if they roll with someone else, I'd think that Collie might be the best play of the WR's.

Kerry Collins' contract with the Colts is for two years and $14 million. The deal includes $4 million guaranteed in the form of a $2.5 million signing bonus and 2011 salary of $1.5 million.
- from rotoworld IMO, it's a terrible signing by Bill Polian. I wonder if he is the highest paid backup in the league.

Pretty cheap if he's the week one starter.

4 M guaranteed for the possibilty that he plays one or two games. Not cheap.

He's making the money of a guy who is likely playing/starting in a few successive games.Just saying...

A little off topic, but this makes me seriously consider riding with Cleveland's Defense to start the season.

1- home vs. Cincy

2- at Indy

3- home vs. Miami

4- home vs. Tenn

Three home games vs. weak offenses and going to Indy to face either Collins or a version of Manning that is still working on timing and arm strength? If they can control the clock with their running game, they should easily be able to keep scores low.

Manning is without a doubt the single most important player in the entire NFL. They should rename the MVP trophy the "Peyton Manning trophy."

That exact roster probably goes 3-13 every year without him.
As to my first point, the game this week opened as a pick 'em. When it was clear Manning wouldn't play, Houston became 9-point favorites. As the article I posted in the gambling thread in the FFA says, no one player has ever moved a pointspread that significantly.Regarding the bolded, it would certainly suck if Manning is gone for the year. But it'll be interesting to see if my theory is true.

surely someone has moved a spread nine points before or I guess ten is more appropriate.Do you buy that line?

Favre's dad passing had a similar last minute change. I don't gamble to recall but just that it was news when he was playing. Monday night game guess of 2001 or 2002 probably week 16, it was FF championship week.

Your first post made me wonder about Barry and a swing in the point spread.

Also, FWIW I think there's some Foster negativity swinging that line too and Peyton's getting all the love.

Absolutely. I've been gambling for a LOT of years and I've never seen such a big line move. Here is the article:
Peyton Manning never misses an NFL game. Point spreads never move nine points in the NFL. Apparently, there is a first time for everything.

Never before has the likely absence of one player moved a line nine points - but this is Peyton Manning and the fastest growing sportsbook in the US, BetOnline.com, says that changes the game significantly.

"Never in the history of the NFL has one player's absence had such a huge impact on the point spread," says Dave Mason at BetOnline. "Usually when a star quarterback is expected to miss a game, the spread will move somewhere between three to five points; never has it been anywhere near nine points. Maybe if half the squad was injured, or arrested the night before...."

Why such a drastic move? "Take a look at the Colts and what else do they have? Their defense is average... their running back is a glorified third down back... sure they have a nice receiver corps, but will 38-year old Kerry Collins -- Manning's backup -- be able to get them the ball consistently? Doubtful," Mason explains.

The Colts are always a team that the betting public loves to back, but don't expect that to be the case this year if Manning isn't healthy.

I can't believe how bad Kerry was in Indy. No one expected Peyton but how did he look so much worse throwing to those WRs than he did throwing to the Titans WRs

Collins was officially placed on IR today. Season over, probably career over too.
His career was already over until the Colts decided to throw 14 million dollars at him for no reason other than panic.
It certainly does seem like a panic move in retrospect. $4 million for 3 games -- biggest waste of money since Jamarcus Russell?
Especially when you consider that he was so much worse that Painter. I mean, there's spending millions on a crappy vet, and there's spending millions on a crappy vet when you've got a better QB on your roster. Just a brutal move by the Colts.
