Kevin Smith vs. Chris Ogb (1 Viewer)

DoubleG

Both are in similar situations:

Injury replacements that were at least 1 or 2 deep on the depth chart.

Both in the league for 2-3 years, both with fairly little success (Smith more success, but then the surgery)

Both in their mid 20s.

Here's the point(s) of discussion:

1) How do we see them producing the rest of this season?

2) Does either one grab the starting gig long term for their respective team?

3) Which is more talented (now)?

And no, this isn't a veiled "WDIS" or "WDIWW" - just thought they had interesting similarities given that in both cases their respective teams had drafted younger guys (Best/Hardesty) in front of them who either can't stay healthy or aren't producing (or both). Just curious where people are at with these two.

Really? Kevin Smith is not only more talented but on a way better offense. Besides, he doesn't have to worry about a Hillis or Hardesty coming back soon.

What? Maybe I'm a bigger fan of Chris O. than some. I just thought it was worth a discussion. Yes, Kevin Smith seems (seemed?) the more talented - but he has had one good game since his surgery. And imho, Best > Hardesty. Hillis is gone after this year. Does anyone see either being the long term starter (I mean adter 2011)?Sorry if I don't get all the silly one-emoticon answers. I thought it was a valid discussion - apparently some of you don't think so and that's fine.

I don't think there are that many similarities. The biggest factor right now is one plays for Detroit and one plays for the Browns.

I'm sorry - I am still not grasping this huge difference. While it's true that Clevland's running game ranks 29th, Detroit's is 22nd - averaging only 7 yards a game more on the ground.Yes, I realize Kevin Smith had a great game...against one of the worst run D's in the game. I also realize that Smith has better matchups the next few weeks - I've got the part of the answer. The question now is more related to the longer term. Does Ogbanaya have a chance to take over the starting job if continues to do well(over Hardesty)? Does Smith (over Best - long term)? Or will both slip back down the depth chart (if they are on the roster at all in 2012)?

If you just talking about who has a better chance fantasy wise now, its Smith and the offense he's in. Long term...too many unknowns. Hard to say who will keep the job, Best is closer to retiring, but Hillis could be gone next year. If Best comes back he could split with Smith, if Hillis comes back i think he gets his full job back. The rushing game doesn't matter with K.Smith because he's almost as good as Best in receiving.

side by side they are completely different talent wise. Kevin Smith was a high draft pick and had some good success until his injury, As others have stated Ogbonnaya has a rough schedule and he is 3rd on the depth chart behind Hillis and Hardesty who will one day be healthy enough to resume their roles. Smith will likely lose playing time as well when Best returns but he is in a situation where he still has value because I think they ease Best back and go RBBC unless one gets hurt.

This is my take, the big question being if HIllis is bsck. Ogbanaya actually has been pretty much under the radar so the long term prognosis is difficult--but I would think he's got good play against Monterio. Kevin Smith blew the doors off this past week and I'm wishing I took him off the wire last week when I considered it--but not even counting last year's injury plagued numbers, he's never had a game like this one. In 2008-2009 he was a midlevel RB2 averaging 10-11ppg. No doubt if he's out there he'll be the 1st off the boards in every league this week; it remains to be seen if he'll ever post numbers like this again.

Fair point, but keep in mind that Detroit is a much better team this year. Was he a midlevel RB2 before because he lacked talent or because he was on a team that was getting their butts kicked every week?I'm a Best owner that missed out on Smith (FA last week) by literally a minute. I hope you're right, but he looked darn good (much better than Best looked earlier in the season). Yes, I know they were playing Carolina. I just mean the guy looked like he had burst, agility, and good hands. Not bad for a guy that hasn't played a real game in a very long time.Talented and on a good offense. I'm buying.

Kevin Smith because he's on a better offensive team.

However, Carolina is one of the worst rush defenses in the league and as I was watching Kevin Smith tear it up at a local bar in Detroit on Sunday, I and a few of my buddies agreed that Kevin Smith will be the most overhyped player coming off the wire since Ryan Torain.

Now, he may not be Ryan Torain bad because that guy is a joke but how many times do we see a player have an outstanding game against a horrible defense and we completely thowout how he ended up getting that huge day.

Of course, I started Maurice Morris in 2 leagues because I knew/had a great feeling that a Detroit RB was about to have a big day and picked the wrong one. In no way was that a big surprise that Carolina was eaten up on defense, especially since they jumped ahead at the beginning of the game.

I'm not saying don't pick up Kevin Smith and keep some bums and don't give him a shot, what I am saying is temper expectations as they aren't playing the Carolina Panthers every week. I expect Detroit's running game to look much more like normal this week as they play Green Bay.
