Holy hell...anyone ever replace one of these for their car?  I am searching for one online and the cheapest price I have seen is $180...and then it still needs to get programmed by a dealership.  I haven't priced that service yet.  Why are these so expensive?

Was going to replace one 5 or so yrs ago. Refused to pay the price. It's insane

Some higher end cars (like BMW or Audi) can be over $400. Consider yourself lucky.

I've done two so far.  One for my 2009 Corvette and one for my wife's (soon to be my teenage son's) 2008 Honda Accord.  So, on the Corvette (this was a few years ago so I'm going from memory) but I had dropped the key fob and it just broke into pieces.  I bought a brand new one (either off e-bay or an online Chevy dealership) and I think it was $100?  Anyway, on that specific key fob, that car is keyless, the only key it has is an emergency key.  Anyway, I disassembled the old fob and replaced the guts into the new key fob and it was good to go.  I think that was a 10 minute job.

On the Accord, the key fob is integrated into the key if that makes sense?  That was more involved.  On that one, I bought a new uncut key and fob from Amazon for $20 or $30 or something and then I tried the same trick.  No joy on that one.  I was able to reprogram it myself, that part was simple but when I swapped out the integrated keys and fobs, the car started up and then immediately shut down and flashed a security message/light.  So, with the old fashioned key + fob types, you can reprogram it yourself but you cannot swap the keys / fobs between each other.  They key and fob are married to each other if that rambling makes sense?  I took the new, uncut key and fob to the dealership and had them cut the key and even though I already had it programmed, they still charged me $95.00 to cut the key and program it, which I thought was kind of a rip off.  If I were to do it over again, I would have gone to a locksmith to get it cut, the guy in the video said he went to Ace Hardware, I went to Ace and they were pretty useless.

Here's a link to a video I followed for my Honda.

Mine is for a Toyota 4Runner.  It is a keyless system.  I had 2 fobs.  One has gone AWOL.  I blame my wife.  I suspect she either swept it away into the garbage or scooped it up and unknowingly put it somewhere as she cleaned up for a party at the house a few weeks ago.    I was thinking I could survive with one, but if something goes wrong with it or it gets misplaced, then I am SOL.

What year?

Was able to find a used fob with a blank key for my maxima.  Had it programmed and the key cut by a local locksmith. Cost about $90 less than new.

I did a quick search and I found they sell the oem 2010 Toyota 4Runner fobs on e-bay (for example for $100) and then it looks like a locksmith or batteriesplus can program the fob for you for $35 - $50.
Still way overpriced for what it is.  But thanks for scouting.  I see the ebay ones are used/refurbished.  I guess I don't really need new as long as it works.

Brand new one for $130.55 from a Toyota dealership out of Georgia.  Your part number is 89904-35010 if you wanted to shop around for it.

Just keep in mind that most of the time if you only have one and lose it, the vehicle will need to be towed into a dealer to reprogram the new fob because of the anti theft system.
