Kickermania (1 Viewer)

Okay - I know they're only kickers ... but still ...

Looking at Mike Herman's Kickermania analysis for Week 2, I noticed that Jay Feely is way down at #17 for the remaining schedule through Week 16. That caught my eye since I'm used to seeing Feely in the top eight or so on the FBG rankings and everywhere else I've looked. He's PK7 on David Dodds' latest Top 250 Forward. Quite a difference.

Last I checked, NYG are still supposed to put up a lot of points this year.

What gives Mike? Anybody?

He also hates Wilkins, who he had initially ranked like 28th. He's up to something like 18th now, which still seems really low.

Makes no sense for a guy that's probably been top 5 since 2001

people look at kicker rankings?

:o  :bag:

as for feely, he's potentially a couple of missed kicks away from getting released, so in that case, i could see a low ranking.

Are you talking about the kicker's "upcoming schedule" or a ranking? I can see why a guy who performs would have a crappy rating when listed by SoS.

Herman=God.Once you understand that, you can get that 4-5 point advantage on your opponent every week, too.

Well, now I know him to have gotten it wrong.

I hope this isn't destroying the no subscriber content rule, but I'll risk it:

Last week he had Wilkins at #27 :bag:

In answer as to why I have Feely ranked where I do for the year:

Last year he scored a lot of points. Looking at all teams that scored 140+ kicking points in a year since 1990, they didn't fare as well the following year. They averaged only 108 points the year after (high of 124, low of 91). In relative ranking terms, that equates to an average ranking of 12th the following year (high of 4th, low of 23rd).

Why do I have Feely towards the lower end of that range? He has a brutal kicking schedule this year. Of his 14 opponents between now and week 16, 13 held the opposing kicker below their weekly average. That factors in whether they were playing at home or on the road. Things could very well be different this year, but 13 of 14 is a pretty significant stat in my mind.

Of course that's just my take. Other people have other opinions. In fact, I asked Jay about this very topic last month:

FBG: Many of our readers play fantasy football, so the next question is for them... How many points do you plan on scoring this year?

Feely: I'll have to ask Eli how many touchdowns he plans to get, and ask Plaxico how many yards he's going to get receiving. I don't know. It's so dependent on how well your offense does. Although Neil Rackers… their offense was terrible last year and it got him a lot of points because he was kicking so many field goals. I think we'll be good again. If I was going to guess, I'd venture to say that I'll be in the top of the league in scoring, just because I think our offense is going to be so good. We've got everybody back from our offense last year, plus we've got Sinorice Moss who's going to help make us even a little more dangerous. I don't see any reason why we're not going to be a dominant offense again.
LINKP.S. I was way way off on Wilkins last week.

Thanks for the explanation Mike. Exactly the kind of rationale I was looking for. Other people have other opinions, but I'm sticking with you. Keys is right - I'm not shy about trying to grab a few extra points from my kicker each week. p.s. That Kickology essay you posted last month was extraordinary - you are a mad man.

Every kicker in the league is "POTENTIALLY a couple of missed kicks away from getting released". Feely is a top kicker if for no other reason than he's on a team that will put up points. And yes, I look at kicker rankings. They are the one position you are almost always going to get points out of. I've won and lost many a game because of kickers.

As a Stover owner, I can't understand how anyone can rate him so highly this week while he's complaining about a sore back.

some more than others... feely's been on a bad roll... if he costs them the game this week with a miss or two, i would put my money on him getting cut over say, vinatieri if he missed multiple tries.

whatever floats your boat
