Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna is preparing for the 2006 season like he will be the starting quarterback. "To be honest with you," he said Wednesday, May 31, "I'm not even thinking of it like I'm going to be anything but the starter." Kinta is not seeing the battle to be the team's starter as a competition. "I'm not looking at it as a quarterback competition," he continued. "I'm approaching it as I'm the starter until somebody tells me differently. And so I'm not every day counting my completions. I'm not doing it. I'm just going out and trying to be the best quarterback I can be." Head coach Rod Marinelli has not named a starting quarterback, nor has he given a timetable for naming one, but Kitna seems clearly in the lead. He took the first snaps at the minicamp in April, and he led the No. 1 unit Wednesday. "He's doing a good job," Marinelli said of Kitna. "We just let it play out. That's all we're doing. All of them are doing a good job right now, so we feel good about it."

funny, i'm seeing a news posting here in F'Guys, hype on the other message boards.... about Kitna's "sheer" numbers catching Scott Mitchell and some great ridiculous pace.

um, both from regular and fantasy perspective... yards and completions are fine and dandy...

despite a slow start at 0-3, almost 0-4, Scott Mitchell wasn't "on pace" to go 0-16. they finished with 10 wins.

Moroever, Scott Mitchell tossed 32 TDs. Kitna is slightly trailing Mitchell with a TD pace 16 TDs.

With the schedule they have, I could see him besting Mitchell in yards, but who cares if the Lions suck, and Kitna can't find the end zone more than 20 times?
