I may (or may not) be getting let go later today - complex story, but I've essentially had enough of the bull#### where I am, although I do have some minor equity participation which I'd like to keep. That said, after being in and out of work over the past 5-6 months with my health ####, our Company's founder has been kinda dicking me around - knowing him, he has put me in a corner to take away my options so he can leverage whatever ongoing "solution" for our working relationship is in his and only his favor.
Well, this became ever so clear (I had a feeling it might come) last Thursday as he somehow thinks I can live without a paycheck, but still able to do work here and there. He's an all or nothing guy, namely all things must work for him and nothing else is acceptable. So, during our meeting at that time I told him that we should discuss alternative options as opposed to my current role as employee (pretty nice, though not quite Otis-esqe compensation package, unless the equity plays out which could be big, very big - or not). He said put something together.
Handed him a three page document / proposal thursday and he's been essentially avoiding me since - looks like we will be meeting in person today at 4:30. What he does not know is in less than a weeks time I have worked my ### off (best I can in my physical state) to do the following:
1. Already started a local Political Action Committee - non partisan focused on supporting candidates who forward an agenda of responsible economic development. So happens the person that I thought about setting this up with already set one up but had no bandwidth to do anything. Im now his co-board member as he's already registered with State Board of Elections and we are planning the first fundraiser.
2. Starting a local 501c4 - Long Island Chamber of Innovation - A major focus of mine will be on the growing innovation economy (which I played a strong role in as a developer of large scale suburban downtowns, essentially building an innovation ecosystem). So I grabbed the URL ChamberofInnovation.org (and .com) and am looking to pull some exec director stipend.
3. Began business plan with a well connected colleague of mine in California for a "Doctor Downtown" concept where we, collectively, strategize on behalf of a municipality looking to revitalize transit oriented downtown areas as between the two of us we know the top experts in each of the 12-20 disciplines that must be coordinated for successes revitalization and economic development. He has his own development and planning strategy firm, is 15 years my senior, and on HIS dime is flying out here so we can launch this new business over the coming month or two. Grabbed www.drdowntown.us just in case. What is your collective take on the .us - I don't mind it, especially in an innovation space looking for a national platform
4. Reached out to a colleague in texas, we are talking tonight, about something similar to the above. Each of those may be anywhere from 2,500-5k a month short term, but long term ownership in a new venture that could really take off, not to mention be fun as hell
5. Re-ignited my existing LLC. and working on webpage etc so I can pick up a couple clients based on my downtown strategy or, more likely, public engagement experience for large scale development projects. Grabbed www.communitycommunications.us and also www.3BLcommunications.com (3BL stands for Triple Bottom Line / economic, environmental and social responsibility or as some put it people, place, profit.
6. Developing potential working relationship with GWU real estate program to assist with some research - maybe I can parlay that into setting up a role as paid speaker, which ties in with two books I've just started.
7. Started writing two books - one is a "treatise on futurbia - from Suburb to Supurb, the future of the stalled american dream. Finding balance between the bedroom community and the innovation economy to transform underperforming suburbs into vibrant and sustainable SUPurbs. The other is currently called "Terms of (Community" Engagement" - detailing what I've learned in my time getting some of the area's largest projects approved and entitled through crowdsourcing and other community building and engagement strategies
So, Hopefully I will be able to find a smooth and friendly transition, stay on at my current firm in a consultant capacity at 1/2 or even 1/3 salary while making that up in short order through the above efforts. But this guy is a firebomb waiting to happen so who knows. I could be fired. I could just say #### it, #### you, suck it (he HAD all the leverage, I was sick, and willing to sign a long term arrangement that gave him what he wanted so i'd have security, but he dicked around with it - now I just don't give a ####. Oh, and got 25k last week from my uncle's estate out of the blue, so that's now my short term salary if needed.
Wish me luck!
