KP's top 100 movies of the 00s -...and WE ARE DONE!!! (1 Viewer)

Thanks for posting these...lots of interesting movies that I haven't heard of before.

Indeed - definitely enjoying your thread
This started off by just entertaining myself, but I would be happy if people got walked away with even one or two movies they haven't seen and end up digging.  A lot of it came as I was looking through my movies and thinking about what type of stuff I needed on bluray.  I figured if I couldn't say that it was a favorite of the year/decade, I probably don't really need to own it.  It really helped me trim down my collection and get some focus to what I am spending money on.

Hell, even posters like Walking Boot who think my movie taste sucks, this gives you 100 movies you don't have to bother watching.  ;)

68. 25TH HOUR

Trailer

Very rare to see a Spike Lee joint on any of my best of lists, but here we go.  Love the story, but what carries this is the performances from a fantastic ensemble cast: Ed Norton, PSH, Brian Cox, Barry Pepper, and others.  Plus I think it's one of the least "Spikey" of Lee's movies, which helps a bit.  I actually didn't know until I was just poking around on the wiki page that this was based on a book by David Benioff of GoT fame.
I find it a very odd movie.  Some parts are pretty good, but overall it just feels off to me.  Maybe it's seeing downtown filmed so soon after 9/11.  I agree its one of Spike's better efforts, but in this time period I prefer Inside Man.

64. THE RING

Trailer

Wife and I saw this one in the theater, and it's still one of my favorite movie experiences.  Very rare movie in the genre for a couple reasons: 1. an actual creepy/scary pg-13 movie, and even more rare 2.  a remake of a foreign horror movie that I would recommend over the original.  Come to think of it, I think it's the only remake I might like in general.  Usually we do a piss poor job of matching the build up and tension of the originals, and go with the f/x.  NEVER a good idea in horror movies.

Looks like one more fun one before it gets a little dark again...

63. FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

Trailer

This was definitely one that kept growing on me over the years, mostly as I grew to love the side characters running around - especially the newlywed couple.  Like the best rom/coms, there is enough sweetness at the core to make it worth it as well. Touches on truths to those uncomfortable moments of having to run into your exes.  Plus Mila Kunis is gorgeous, so there's that.

unfortunately this (and every movie/TV show in which he plays a major role) is ruined by Jason Segel. There aren't many actors I cant stand or will avoid but he is #1 on the list. Just horrible. The only movie I enjoy with him is Jeff, Who Lives at Home. Apparently the writing/directing of The Duplass Brothers is the only thing that can overcome his terrible acting/personality.

I get that completely.  I actually usually like Segel, but his character was a big reason I didn't love the movie the first time around.  No way around it if you hate him that much though, and that would kill most comedies (for me that person would be Melissa McCarthy.  I find her horribly unfunny).  For me the repeat viewings had me focusing on the rest of the characters and loving the movie more and more in spite of Segel.

Just in comparison 2000 vs 2001

In the year 2000 I can list about 25 films I really liked. In 2001 I have a hard time finding 5 that would make an all time list for me.

Out of those 20-25 films however I don't know that any of them are a true #1...or maybe I simply like a lot of films that year equally.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was ground breaking and I remember running to Mann's Chinese and I was blown away. One of the rare films I wanted to go buy another ticket. It had the epic feel and thrilling chase scenes, incredible fight scenes and people walking on top of trees which felt new at the time. I loved this movie.

This would be in my top 20 if I had to guess. It's a beautiful story with amazing cinematography and the special efx only enhance and do not distract.

Quills is a masterpiece and Geoffrey Rush eats up the screen. This movie did less than $10M at the B.O. I believe. Strong performances from all the lead actors in this film and Michael Caine is a wonderful antagonist for the film.

Snatch is like comfort food and I have a few of those where I don't know if they are truly great films but I can quote them back and forth and never seem to tire of them playing in the back ground. I haven't seen this one in a few years, might be time to re-watch it.

Traffic is one of two Soderbergh films he was nominated for as best director. I prefer this to EB but both are quality made films.

Then you have a lot of indie films or felt like they were such as You Can Count on Me, Requiem for a Dream, Almost Famous, Wonder Boys, Best in Show, Shadow of the Vampire, Boiler Room, High Fidelity, and I could keep going.

Great thread idea KP, you're doing a good job of showcasing the films you seem to think are superior to prior generations. I had moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and I went to the movies a lot when I lived in SoCal and got to see a lot of films that maybe didn't even see a wide release. So many amazing theaters to catch a movie in Southern California/West LA

62. MONSTER'S BALL

Trailer

Back to the dark side of humanity.  Fantastic performances about of group of truly awful people.  I remembered him from that 10 Things I Hate about You movie, but this is the first time that I remember seeing the greatness that was to come from Ledger.  We just might see him again further up the list.

My top films of this decade was more of a "stop #####ing about nothing good coming out anymore" thread.  Tried to focus on more original stuff, etc...  This honestly was more out of curiosity what this list would look like, and is more fun/my favorites.  While I did start a little bit in college, it was between probably '98-'04 that I really starting digging into movies more, so this decade will always have a soft spot for me. Not trying to prove that something is better than others in here, just having fun and hoping for discussion.

I think my list of 2000 vs 2001 would be more even, but I do expect to get flamed more later as people realize what isn't on the list than what is.  There are a quite a few movies from 2000 that I think are quite overrated.

holy smokes... I just googled films by year and per MOP jumped into 2000- a ton of movies I liked that year (in no particular order):

Snatch, American Psycho, Proof of Life, the Princess and the Warrior, Time Code, Filth and the Fury, Nurse Betty, High Fidelity, Dark Days, Cast Away, Shadow of the Vampire, Before Night Falls, Best in Show, Pollock, The Gleaners and I, Sexy Beast, Requiem for a Dream, Dancer in the Dark, Almost Famous, Memento, Amores Perros, Gladiator, Yi Yi, In the Mood for Love, Crouching Tiger.

See, it's not too hard to get to 100. ;)

There are several you listed that are still in my 'need to see' queue as well.

I'll have to do this when I get more time to concentrate and/or have more time. how would you feel if I dumped the list in here? doubt I'll write anything up as you have- just a list or two.

btw- those last 3 in my post above are all likely top 20 for me- without having looked at other years. YiYi in particular was amazing.

61. HUNGER

Trailer

Sir Davos sighting!  I can't think of many better debut movies from a director than this one by Steve McQueen.  Fantastic movie about the IRA hunger strike in a prison in the early 80s.  Mr. Fassbender gives Christian Bale a run for his money as he starved himself for 10 weeks for this role.  There is an amazing long take (I believe about 20mins) in the middle of the movie between Davos and Fassbender that is about as good as anything you will ever see in the movies.  Unheard of for a first timer to plop the camera down and let the 2 go head to head for that extended amount of time.  Been a fan of McQueen and Fassbender since, but I think this is each of their best work.

Yep, and two of those are on my need to see list.  Don't care if you or others put up their lists - it's all about the love of movies in here...

Wow, sorry everybody - I type as I go, and really wasn't paying attention to what the list looked like overall.  Seems like sometimes there are strings of similar movies in a row, but wow - I am not sure you could put together 3 bleaker, hard to watch movies than I did for #s 62-60.  Please don't watch these back to back if you are playing along at home...

60. 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, 2 DAYS

Trailer

Just one of those movies I have never been able to shake since watching it.  Powerful, powerful stuff.  Here we have the struggle of two college women in 80 Romania as they try to get an abortion for one of them.  It is a fitting movie to place by Hunger because they are similar in the unrelenting nature of the movie and filled with long takes, great acting, and realistic dialogue.  You feel drained by the time they are over.

You and I have very different tastes in film at times. I am not a fan of Steve McQueen and have a strong bias towards his films since this one, namely the Slave film which I felt was total exploitation especially as a student of history.

He has cast Fassbender a few times it seems.  And this isn't a fun movie to watch, sometimes they aren't. For example, I hate Passion of the Chirst, it did $400M+ in US alone. At the same time it's a well made film, I simply hate the material.

59. A TALE OF TWO SISTERS

Trailer

Somebody making me watch Audition set me off on a spree of watching all the foreign horror movies I could get my hands on.  I have vivid memories of watching this one by myself late at night, curled up on the couch, and having the impulse to hide under the blanket .  Very rare that a movie gets to me in that way, and it has stuck with me since.  It's one I need to revisit, so forgive me if it doesn't hold up.  Remembering it creeping me out and a couple of the scenes that stick in my head justified the ranking without the rewatch for me.

58. CASINO ROYALE

Trailer

I am probably not the person to talk about this movie, as this was the first Bond movie I had seen. :bag:   Don't know how it stacks up in the series or how he is as Bond, just think this was one of the best action movies I had seen in this time.

Most Bond fans love this film. It has a good villain, poker was all time high as well when they made that the center piece during parts of the film. The ball torture scene seemed to get Daniel Craig major props as Bond. Craig has done 2-3 really strong Bond films now, this was one of the best.

57. SUPERBAD

NSFW Trailer

Every decade needs the token High School "gotta get laid" movie.  Love everybody in this one, and it keeps getting higher and higher up the list the more I watch it.

There's a lot of good comedy in this decade. Dodgeball anywhere on this list? Maybe if we were listing top 50 comedies of the 00s.

Superbad is like Old School, it has to be on a short list of better comedies in this decade.

56. SYRIANA

Trailer

I am usually a sucker for movies that juggle multiple intersecting storylines.  I don't tend to get my panties in a wad about if political messages are or aren't in the movies.  Even if this is loosely based on Bob Baer, a former CIA agent, and his book, this is still a movie.  Just love the ensemble cast and the tension that this movie has.  Was written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, who wrote the screenplay for Traffic.

75. BLACK HAWK DOWN

Trailer

This was the director I was referring to in the other post - one of the few of Scott's that I love lately.  An odd mix of actors that made for a great ensemble cast, great action, and a great story (I admit to being a sucker for the 'based on a true story' movies.).  Not much to say here - one of the better war movies of the era.
Very well made, Scott did this after Gladiator I think. That movie is riddled with a lot of oops moments, I'm talking Gladiator.

I am a Ridley Scott fan but I also understand that many of his films are not the best. I like his work on Aliens and Blade Runner more than Gladiator.

This movie is very well made, it's a throwback to old school war movies that had lots of good actors across the board. I don't like this movie as much as I used to. In fact I'm not sure it would make my top 100 but if it did, somewhere you have it ranked to the back 25 sounds about right.

We will discuss what comedies are or aren't on the list at the end.  There was a decent discussion about my sense of humor (or lack thereof) in my other ranking thread.  I didn't think the past 5 years had much good come out for the genre, but the 00s was stuffed.  A lot will be left off the list that I like quite a bit.  I will say that it looks like I only have 3 more that I would consider true comedies in the same style as Superbad left on the list.  Others that are comedy-ish though??

72. IRON MAN

Trailer

So damn fun.  This is a role that RDJ was born to do, and it's one of the best Marvel (hell, superhero movies) out there.  Usually what I dig most about these movies, since I don't read comics, is the origin stories.  This was a great one with humor and action.  I am sure we will see RDJ at least two more times as I go through this countdown too....
Loved it. It's right up there with...it's gonna be interesting to see how you rank Batman Begins vs The Dark Knight, I like both of them but prefer BB. I also love Spiderman 2, much more than any of the other 4-5 released since 2002.

RDJ nails it and he carries the Avengers IMO, haven't seen the new Capt America film.

I think it's in the OP, but here it is as well

Top 50 Movies of the decade (so far)

That one I limited myself a lot more, going for original stuff.  There is a lot of movies I love that won't be on there because I didn't do foreign, sequels, and stayed away from comic book movies I believe.

ETA: Sorry, I saw that I was lazy and didn't post my list in the OP, so people will have to dig through that one a bit.  After this is done, I might go back and make that easier.

55. BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD

Trailer

Here we have a double dose of RIP with it being Lumet's last movie he directed and a fantastic performance from PSH.  Ethan Hawke is here as his down and out brother and they decide to pull a robbery which, you guessed it, isn't going to go like they wanted.  Was glued to the screen through the whole movie, just fantastic performances.  Also has Marisa Tomei , Albert Finney, and KP favorites Amy Ryan and Michael Shannon.

54. 28 DAYS LATER

Trailer

Not the biggest Danny Boyle fan, and zombie movies aren't my favorite genre of horror, but this combination worked so damn well.  I think a lot of my dislike was getting bored with the same slow, stupid zombies.  I realize it's a numbers game, but it still is a difficult thing to make scary in a movie for me.  Enter Boyle's fast zombies (are they technically zombies?) and his style of making movies, and this is one of the best horror movies of the decade.  I also like that he introduced more dread by showing just how little it took to be infected.  Probably less competition than vampire movies, but still has to be one of the best that has been made in the genre.

Damn.  Thank you for exposing me to this movie.  I had never even heard of it, & it's a subject I hold dear to my heart.

was thinking this would be even higher. Great, great movie and one of my all time favorites. Haven't seen it in a couple years, going to fire it up this weekend.

Yeah, this can be an arbitrary thing.  We are talking the slimmest of margins even between #20 and #50, and would probably change in a few months as I watch and rewatch more movies from the era.  Will admit some might just be because I saw them more recently or just watch them more, etc..   On my scale, this is probably just a difference between an 8 and an 8.5 or something.

53. PAN'S LABYRINTH

Trailer

In general I think Del Toro is overrated, but this is the one of his that clicks for me.  In general I think his movies look good and love his imagination, but I usually find the story lacking.  Here we have a great mix of both.  Great stuff.

51. AMERICAN PSYCHO

Trailer

This was one of the bigger surprises for me while I was doing this list.  I talk about stuff moving up and down the list as you get older, tastes change, etc.  Still love it and quote it a lot - "I have to return some videotapes" is used way too much by me.  As I did my rewatches, other stuff seemed to climb the list as this one dropped a bit.  Last time I watched I felt like it was a collection of great scenes, but didn't gel as well overall for me.  KP doing this 10 years ago would have probably had it in the top 10.

2 months to get through the first 50.  I promise it won't take that long to get through the next 50.  (might just need to unplug the 360 for a few days so I can focus though).

50. LARS AND THE REAL GIRL

Trailer

Odd and quirky for sure, but just really fell for the sweetness of the movie.  I thought that it was refreshing that people rallied around this guy who is a bit off, and genuinely wanted to accept him for what he is.  Even the creepy mustache can't kill my man crush on Ryan Gosling.

49. ONCE

Trailer

For the most part I hate musicals, but even my cold heart was able to fall in love with this movie.  Just a simple, nice story with some great music.  I am also a huge fan of movies where people can have a connection, even be attracted to the each other, but that isn't all the movie.

48. THE BOURNE IDENTITY

Trailer

I am a big fan of all 3, but still like the first slightly more than the other two.  I was skeptical at first, not knowing if Damon could pull of a more physical type of role, but thought he nailed it.  For me this is the perfect type of action movie with the way the action is shot, the chases, the tension.  Couldn't stand Renner is the 4th once, but I have an almost Nic Cage level of hatred for him, so maybe it's better than I give it credit for.

47. KISS KISS BANG BANG

Trailer

Shane Black wrote some of my favorite movies from my younger days: Lethal Weapon, Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and the Long Kiss Goodnight.  I guess he got tired of just writing (and just doing L movies), and this was his first time behind the camera.  Struck gold with RDJ and Kilmer.  At the time that I saw this, I couldn't remember the last time I saw either of them in anything worthwhile.  I was hesitant to watch it because of them, but love the hell out of this one.

46. FINDING NEMO

Trailer

I know there are the 'critical darling' Pixar movies that came out during the time frame we are discussing here, but those never seemed to stick with me.  I like them alright, but never really want to put them in again.  Since I watched these over and over with the son, the ones that got me touched on that parent theme, starting with this one.  Love that this is really Marlin's story and about a dad needing to let go.  Besides the Toy Story movies, Pixar hasn't gotten the sequels right (even those got to be the same story for the most part), so I am really hesitant to watch Finding Dory (but I know I will eventually).

#s 50-41 is a surprisingly light and fun mix of movies for me.  Looks like this is where a few of my rom/coms landed mixed with a bit of action.

45. 500 DAYS OF SUMMER

Trailer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has it bad for Zooey Deschanel, and who the hell can blame him?  While I fully admit to loving the rom-coms more than a grown man should, the ones that usually end up sticking with me are ones that are a little 'different':  are more honest about relationships, are a little messier, the people don't end up with each other, it is just about a brief time together, etc..  Really like the way this one jumps and around and shows this relationship at different times.  I really like JG-L, and wish he was in more stuff.
