Kregg Lumpkin (1 Viewer)

I know all of the talk has been about Lynch, DeAngelo, or Starks in Green Bay, but a guy to keep an eye on is Kregg Lumpkin. The Bucs picked up Lumpkin off waivers as soon as he was waived by the Packers. The following day, the Titans waived Blount, and the Bucs picked him up too.

Here's the backs currently on the Bucs roster:

Caddy

Blount

Huggins

Graham (FB, but also plays RB)

Lumpkin

Pressley (FB)

First of all, I don't think the Bucs would have claimed Lumpkin in the first place if Blount was available the same time. The Bucs don't need 6 backs. Also, I don't think Green Bay would have cut Lumpkin knowing that they'd be without Grant for the year.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik loves collecting draft picks. If he could get a 7th rounder for Lumpkin, I'm sure he would do it. Lumpkin already knows the Packers playbook, and the Packers were somewhat high on him. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Green Bay was hoping to keep Lumpkin on their practice sqaud.

Whether or not Lumpkin gets traded, I don't think he'll be on the Bucs roster for very long. 2 or 3 other teams put in a waiver request for him, so if he gets cut, another team surely would pick him up.

Lumpkin is certainly a long shot to do anything this year, but if you have a free roster spot, why not stash him for a few weeks and see if anything happens?

IIRC Green Bay picked up Dimitri Nance off of Atlanta's practice squad instead opting for Lumpkin.

So I wonder just what value Lumpkin really has if the team that knows him the best goes in another direction when they need a RB.

Then again, maybe they like Nance a lot.

Since Tampa claimed Lumpkin off waivers, Green Bay didn't have the chance to sign Lumpkin to the practice squad.

So you're saying Lumpkin was never on TB's practice squad?

Yes, that is correct. The Bucs claimed Lumpkin off waivers, and added him to their active roster. He has been on the active roster since then. Denver, Houston, and Seattle also put in a waiver claim to add Lumpkin to their 53 man roster.

I think the OP has a valid point. I believe if Green Bay could have added Lumpkin after Grant went down they would have immediately. He has also been in Green Bay's system a couple of years and has looked decent. If he was available he could very well be contributing in Green Bay.
