L Coles (1 Viewer)

Coles has two years left on his deal, a deal that overpaid him in the first year or two. With two years lef on a deal the player does not have much leverage.

Coles is a good WR, not a great WR. Under 5 TDs a year for his career. I would jump all over 11 million if I were Coles.

New England.Dude is tough as nails, a real BB type of guy.Plus jamming it to Mangini is always nice forthe Patriot FO.
Why would New Englandpay a ton of money fora 30 year old receiver with an injury history looking for a monster paydaywhen they've already got Wes Welker toperform the same role?
I think you may be right ST.The money is way too much for the Pats, and his game may be just too similar to that of Welker.

As info has come out I've changed my stance....My original stance as a fan was that this was the captain of the team and the best player on offense that must be locked up...Now finding out that they offered him 11 Million for 2 years guaranteed... Sheesh. What would he get on the open market - Probably still 11 million guaranteed but, it will be written to seem like a 5-6 year deal...... So, Coles will run around talking like he made more money and then after 2 years when he's CUT, it wil be the same exact deal.....But, then he'll claim that the Jets should have given more....Looking at it more business like, I agree with Joe Beningo on WFAN who was just saying.. "Hey, this team needs a lot - and will take a year or two to compete - Will Coles be a top WR then? There are only a few players on this team worthy of being locked up right now.. Maybe Rhodes, Revis, Cotchery, Harris and Mangold.... And even Mangold has taken hits when the film was scrutinized by the guys at Football Outsiders.com....If they offered him 11 Million guaranteed, I'm not so sure what else they can do, other than reword the contract to seem longer.Otherwise sign Berrian, draft a guy and move on....Coles is leaning more towards Kendall in my eyes..... And Honestly, I can't see fault in the Jets management in either case - with the cap the way it is, sometimes you need to play hardball and move on - Hopefully what they learned is to not drag things out.

Tannenbaum on Coles, Clemens, Chad and Vilma

GM Mike Tannenbaum, attending the scouting combine in Indianapolis, sat down for an interview today with Sirius radio. Here are some excepts, courtesy of Randy Lange of NewYorkJets.com.

On WR Laveranues Coles, who last week ripped the organization for lying to him about a contract extension: “I have a lot of respect for Laveranues. I’ve talked to him a lot recently. I saw his comments, obviously. We’re going to just keep working hard and communicating. I think only good things happen when both sides keep talking. He’s an important member of our organization. We’re trying to keep these conversations private in terms of the specifics, but he’s a wonderful player, a better person and I’m really glad he’s a Jet.”

(P.S.: I confirmed that the Jets have indeed offered to guarantee Coles’ salary in 2008 and 2009, a total of $11 million. My gut tells me that, if they’re willing to do that much, they’d be willing to give him a long-term deal with a big signing bonus.)

On the quarterback situation between Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington: “I’m glad we’ve got Kellen and Chad. Quarterbacks are really important in this league. I expect both of them to be back.”

On the report in today’s Daily News that LB Jonathan Vilma has been given permission to seek a trade, Tannenbaum didn’t refute the story: “If opportunities present themselves, we’ll carefully evaluate then. It’s kind of a sensitive time with those things. But he’s a Jet, Jon’s done a lot of good things for us, and we’ll see what the future brings.”

On the Jets’ plan for free agency, which begins next Friday: “I know we’re prepared. We’re going to work on what we can control. We can sign seven guys or not sign any. You just never know the vagaries of free agency, but we’re prepared and we’ll see what happens. We’re working hard to put ourselves in position to react to the market.”

I think the Jets need to stand firm in their offer, which I feel is unbelievable fair. 11 mil guaranteed over two years. Cotchery is ready to be the # 1 in New York. If Coles sits, is cut, or is traded, their depth does take a huge hit, but they can use the $$$ elsewhere. Brad Smith and Cotchery would likely be the 2 starters. Breaking the bank for Berrian would not be worth it. They should look for a veteran who is cut to add depth, draft a receiver in the 3rd round or later, and continue to rebuild that defense.
