Not hitting the panic button or anything and he was never going to contribute much this year, but would have expected to see him active at least a few times. Is he hurt, or just buried on the depth chart? Looks like it might be a tough hold on dynasty w/short rosters to get payoff in a few years......

Unless you're in an especially shallow dyno he's a stash and hold. The 9ers brought in Jacobs this offseason and have Hunter behind Gore, based on these moves it shouldn't be a big surprise they're being patient with LMJ. What they do this offseason will say a lot about how they feel about LMJ's prospects going forward. Let Jacobs walk and don't bring anyone else in and I'd say he's going to be worked into the mix. Similar story with Jenkins, I believe Crabtree's contract is up and I highly doubt Moss comes back. Do the 9ers bring anyone else in? or is it Manningham and Jenkins with the lead on the 1-2 jobs? even if they bring Crabtree back a 3rd WR will be worked in so it's all a matter of if they address the position in the offseaon or not.

why would jenkins be in the lead for the 1-2 spots when he is not even dressing and guys like ginn/williams are? I can't imagine they think this guy is ready for the number 2 spot next season when he isn't even playing this season. The same thing goes for James. Sure he might turn into something, nobody knows, but I think its fairly telling that he isn't even suiting up. Players that have all the skills play...they don't warm the bench.

Ginn and Williams have special teams value, Jenkins does not. They're both role WR's too, they'll never be starting types, but they can be adequate 3's and 4's.Hunter's earned the backup role and while I think Jacobs is more twinkle toes than the power back option that's why San Fran brought him in.As a general rule re rookies I wait until offseason #2 to change my opinion on most, some need a year of experience while others jump right in. Yeah, I'd feel better about Gordon and Turbin right now than Jenkins and LMJ but you've already made your bed with the latter 2. All you can do is wait it out and re-evaluate in May.

I guess this is my feeling as well; it's just tough in 20 man roster leagues. If he's still not active early next year, then the decision may become tougher. I've cut players like Decker in the past; but you can never keep everyone you want to.

Like Victor Cruz, Wes Welker, Vincent Jackson, Miles Austin, Steve Johnson, Pierre Garcon and Eric Decker?

Uh. When was Wilson ever inactive? Huge difference. IMO James is nothing more than Stephens-Howling.

Of course he is a dynasty hold. I had no illusions of him displacing Gore when I drafted him in the 2nd round of a rookie draft. However, Gore is nearing 30 with a ton of mileage and I drafted James focused entirely on 2013-2014. Hard to imagine the Niners would grab him in the 2nd, hearing Harbaugh's quotes on not wanting to oppose James anymore (as he did at Stanford), and concluding he has no future after 6 mere NFL weeks. A person with that mindset should have avoided this rookie, because SF has veterans at the position. I'm perfectly content with him using this season getting familiar with the playbook, leqarning to block, and going through NFL weight training. Definite hold, because speed and elusivity translate to the NFL game. And of course James still has a chance to play in 2012 if the Niners suffer injuries at the RB position, which is the way many rookies get opportunity before their time.

His quote was they don't warm the bench, outside of garbage time Wilson warms the bench. And your right there is a difference, namely injuries and the players ahead of the rookies.

SF is going to be a great place for RBs in the next few years. Why wouldn't LMJ be a hold? Arian Foster only played 6 games as a rookie with Houston and started the year on the practice squad. If you dropped him early during the 09 season (like I did) you sorely regretted it.

You have to hold LMJ this year to see how they work him in for the '13 season. It should be the case for any young RB in a place that is favorable for the running game.

I obviously meant he is inactive...he's not even playing, not even in garbage time. That says an awful lot...Feel free to love those two guys all you want, all I have is an opinion but its been a long time I think since top picks were inactive their entire rookie season and then just took off in season 2. If anything they would both be eased in next year almost like the are rookies and if they have value it will be in season 3. Thats a lot of 'ifs'

Yes, it says that the 49ers are a deep team that isn't forced to start rookies. Being inactive means absolutely nothing.

Out of curiousity has there ever been a early round pick that spent their first year completely inactive and come back to be a star?

If I had to guess I would say the Niners saw James as a Sproles-like role in their offense. There are many reasons why he is not playing. The bottomline is I think he is a talented player and I am eyeballing picking him up as soon as any wind of him becoming active surfaces.

http://www.ninersnation.com/2012/10/6/3463280/jim-harbaugh-willie-mays-aj-jenkins-lamichael-james-press-transcript

From Oct 6th:

We break down some of Jim Harbaugh's press conference comments as the 49ers get ready for their Week 5 contest against the Buffalo Bills.

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh chatted with the media yesterday and had a chance to hit on a variety of topics.

He was asked specifically about A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James, both of whom have not seen the field this season. Jenkins was active one game but did not get on the field, while James has been inactive all four games.

What have WR A.J. Jenkins and RB LaMichael James shown you in practice? Are they better I assume now than they were five weeks ago?

"Multiple ways and right now both in an understudy role. But, continuing to get ready when called upon."

What can they do to be if they are called upon? Is that just more a function of your depth at those positions? The fact that they haven't been called upon?

"I think they could go in and do a fine job right now. And you get better at football by practicing and playing football. So, they're going to be just fine."

I shot some video discussing the 49ers at the quarter mark and I mentioned how this was like a red-shirt season for the rookie draft class. I think that phrase applies primarily to Joe Looney, but Jenkins, James and Robinson are all in a learning period as well. If the 49ers are able to secure specific playoff positioning with a week or two to play, I could very well see these guys getting some action late in the season. I don't know if that positioning will necessarily be secured prior to the last season, so we'll have to wait and see on that. In the meantime, it really is difficult to know the team's plans with regards to most of the rookies.

They are "continuing to get ready" and that could mean one of a million things. Players do get better with practice, but I have to think getting into real game action is important as well. They all got preseason action, so it is entirely possible we will just wait and see. Colin Kaepernick saw limited game action last year, and this wouldn't be the first time high picks sat much of their first year. Nonetheless it is something that will continue to be followed in excruciating detail.

Vincent Jackson was a 2nd round pick who caught 3 passes his rookie year. Not quite a star, but Meachem was a 1st round pick and spent the year inactive.

Meachem not quite a star. Since he was a first round pick, I'd say he's been a complete bust.
