Ginn and Williams have special teams value, Jenkins does not. They're both role WR's too, they'll never be starting types, but they can be adequate 3's and 4's.Hunter's earned the backup role and while I think Jacobs is more twinkle toes than the power back option that's why San Fran brought him in.As a general rule re rookies I wait until offseason #2 to change my opinion on most, some need a year of experience while others jump right in. Yeah, I'd feel better about Gordon and Turbin right now than Jenkins and LMJ but you've already made your bed with the latter 2. All you can do is wait it out and re-evaluate in May.

I guess this is my feeling as well; it's just tough in 20 man roster leagues. If he's still not active early next year, then the decision may become tougher. I've cut players like Decker in the past; but you can never keep everyone you want to.

Of course he is a dynasty hold. I had no illusions of him displacing Gore when I drafted him in the 2nd round of a rookie draft. However, Gore is nearing 30 with a ton of mileage and I drafted James focused entirely on 2013-2014. Hard to imagine the Niners would grab him in the 2nd, hearing Harbaugh's quotes on not wanting to oppose James anymore (as he did at Stanford), and concluding he has no future after 6 mere NFL weeks. A person with that mindset should have avoided this rookie, because SF has veterans at the position. I'm perfectly content with him using this season getting familiar with the playbook, leqarning to block, and going through NFL weight training. Definite hold, because speed and elusivity translate to the NFL game. And of course James still has a chance to play in 2012 if the Niners suffer injuries at the RB position, which is the way many rookies get opportunity before their time.

SF is going to be a great place for RBs in the next few years. Why wouldn't LMJ be a hold? Arian Foster only played 6 games as a rookie with Houston and started the year on the practice squad. If you dropped him early during the 09 season (like I did) you sorely regretted it.

You have to hold LMJ this year to see how they work him in for the '13 season. It should be the case for any young RB in a place that is favorable for the running game.

If I had to guess I would say the Niners saw James as a Sproles-like role in their offense. There are many reasons why he is not playing. The bottomline is I think he is a talented player and I am eyeballing picking him up as soon as any wind of him becoming active surfaces.

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh chatted with the media yesterday and had a chance to hit on a variety of topics.

He was asked specifically about A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James, both of whom have not seen the field this season. Jenkins was active one game but did not get on the field, while James has been inactive all four games.

What have WR A.J. Jenkins and RB LaMichael James shown you in practice? Are they better I assume now than they were five weeks ago?

"Multiple ways and right now both in an understudy role. But, continuing to get ready when called upon."

What can they do to be if they are called upon? Is that just more a function of your depth at those positions? The fact that they haven't been called upon?

"I think they could go in and do a fine job right now. And you get better at football by practicing and playing football. So, they're going to be just fine."

I shot some video discussing the 49ers at the quarter mark and I mentioned how this was like a red-shirt season for the rookie draft class. I think that phrase applies primarily to Joe Looney, but Jenkins, James and Robinson are all in a learning period as well. If the 49ers are able to secure specific playoff positioning with a week or two to play, I could very well see these guys getting some action late in the season. I don't know if that positioning will necessarily be secured prior to the last season, so we'll have to wait and see on that. In the meantime, it really is difficult to know the team's plans with regards to most of the rookies.

They are "continuing to get ready" and that could mean one of a million things. Players do get better with practice, but I have to think getting into real game action is important as well. They all got preseason action, so it is entirely possible we will just wait and see. Colin Kaepernick saw limited game action last year, and this wouldn't be the first time high picks sat much of their first year. Nonetheless it is something that will continue to be followed in excruciating detail.

Vincent Jackson was a 2nd round pick who caught 3 passes his rookie year. Not quite a star, but Meachem was a 1st round pick and spent the year inactive.
