Raiders running back LaMont Jordan is intent on returning to action Sunday without having missed a game. So much so that he received a pain-killing shot in his back.
Even so, he isn't sure he'll be able to play against the San Diego Chargers.
"This is the worst it's been in years," Jordan said Thursday. "I really can't remember it feeling that bad, as it did in the Miami game, but it's getting better. I'm not going to say I'm 100 percent or anything like that."
Jordan was hurt late in the second half of the Sept. 30 game at Miami. He missed the rest of the game and needed crutches in the locker room. He has experienced back pain off and on in recent years. He said it has bothered him since the first day of training camp this year.
He practiced Wednesday for the first time since his injury but was unable to make it through the entire set of drills. Thursday, he showed some improvement, by all accounts.
"I ran a lot better today," Jordan said. "Really, it's just a matter of how things go (today) and if the coaches feel comfortable with me getting out there."
If Jordan can't play, Dominic Rhodes and Justin Fargas are ready replacements.
Rhodes figures to boost the running game, which leads the league with 194.2 yards a game, and give the team options in the passing game.
"Right now the game plan is we run the rock, that's what we do," Rhodes said. "I think it'll be more in the passing game where they get me out, one on one with

people and try to beat them on deep routes, option routes and stuff like that."
Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin wants to be careful with Rhodes. The idea of moving him around on the field to create mismatches is tempting, but not at the risk of compromising the offense.
"The guy hasn't played yet and so the last thing we want to do is put a bunch on him and try to do too much," Kiffin said. "He's not even right yet with just the basic stuff."
• Fargas isn't concerned about who is rushing: "We're all capable of getting the job done," he said.
• Kiffin wasn't optimistic about the prospects of defensive end Derrick Burgess (calf) and defensive tackle Gerard Warren (thigh) playing Sunday.
Warren missed his third consecutive practice with an injury he sustained eight days ago. Burgess has missed Oakland's past two games. He suffered a setback Wednesday, according to Kiffin, but still attempted to practice Thursday.
"We're prepared to go without them," Kiffin said.
• Quarterback Josh McCown (toe) also did not practice. Linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba (foot) practiced but was unable to finish because of lingering pain, he said.
