Laptop Help (1 Viewer)

Don't Noonan

Footballguy
My daughter's laptop is not working correctly so I thought I would ask the FFA for some help.  It is a Dell laptop, say 1 year old.  The screen is not coming on.  It is a black screen but once I connect the power cord the Dell logo comes on for 2 seconds and then goes black.  I repeat this over and over but can never get the screen to stay on.  I'm shuked.  Any ideas?  TIA!

Pop out the battery, put it back in and see if it will catch.  No clue if it will work in this case, but I've had success with it on weird starts..

It's possible it is stuck in deep sleep or hibernation mode. Remove the battery and unplug the power adapter wait a few minutes, press the power button and hold it in for a few seconds, then plug everything back in.

Repeatedly press the power button  (just keep mashing it 5 and only stop if you see the Dell slash screen and the progress bat at the bottom actually starts to go somewhere) if you are lucky it will stay up at the Dell screen and you should either boot up normally or get a message asking if you want to dump the saved login session and boot fresh or not. Take that option.

Try getting into the bios within those two seconds.  Either hitting F1, F2, Del or Esc during boot should get you in.  If you can do that, then it's likely an OS issue or drive issue.

When you plug the power cord in an indicator should light up (on most laptops anyway) indicating that AC is connected, and possibly another that shows the battery is charging. Do those come on? Kind of sounds like you have a drained battery and possibly the charging circuit is dead. Maybe find someone with another Dell and try their AC adapter.

I have tried hitting these buttons but nothing happens.  I see the bar start loafing before screen goes black

I removed battery last night, I will try this again

The battery/power is probably the problem, but it could also be a dead fan.  If the laptop has no fan working, it will turn on for a bit, then when it starts overheating it will shut itself off.

The last time it was working, did it shut down correctly or just turn off all of a sudden?

The most important part (if it is stuck in a hibernation state) is to just push the button 5,6,7 or more times rapidly when you start it up to try to override the hibernate setting.
Ok thanks.  Will try tonight.   I just checked and it is still under warranty so I will call Dell tonight if need be.

Don't know about consumer dell products, but I've purchased a bunch of dell business-level products and they are built very well and hold up over time.
I had a string of 3 consumer dell machines that were complete pieces of ####. I believe ya on the business machines being better, though.
