So who do you take?

You certainly don't want a mediocre has-been that will never get off of your bench. You're looking for that Steal of the Draft ("SOD") here, just like Maurice Jones Drew was last year.

Plenty of names and candidates exist. Who will it be, and why?

(Note - they need not to "blow up" like MJD did - stick to why you'd take Player X as your last WR in your draft please).

(I am also keeping this to those RBs with ADPs of RB49 and beyond - I'm talking about the 5th, 6th or even 7th RB on your team.)

Problem is, none of the above is likely to have more than 100 carries unless due to injury. Someone listed above could end up having a big year, but predicting which RB1 ahead of them will go down is like pulling a name out of a hat.

The most likely to see the most touches in the normal scheme of the offense are Morris, Peterson, Thomas and Chatman (hey, sounds like a law firm). And none of those have starting fantasy value without an injury.

 
This is very close to call. I went with Tony Hunt. He already has earned the goal line duties and his 6'1, 222 frame is ideal for pounding the ball when needed. I think Philadelphia is going to give Westbrook a lot of touches, but I see Hunt coming into the mix, especially inside the 10 yard line which could lead to a lot of TDs a-la Marion Barber or Jones-Drew last year.

A write-in vote to the entire Buffalo RB corps minus Marshawn Lynch. I like Anthony Thomas, but Wright is the deeper sleeper that could very easily be a last pick in the draft, unlike Anthony Thomas. Wright averaged 5.6 YPC with Fresno State last season totaling nearly 1700 total yards of offense with 12 TDs. The Bills have mentioned that they likely will use a RBBC approach which would open up an opportunity for everyone to showcase their ability, including Wright. If something happened to Anthony Thomas, I could see him taking over goal line duties. Then there is Fred Jackson, who has been getting some hype lately. Jackson went to little-known Coe College, which coincidentally was one of Marv Levy's alma maters. He must've seen something in this kid. I think he has 2 pre-season TDs so far? As for Marshawn Lynch in all of this, I don't see him getting 20 carries a game. Until someone really makes themselves known as the go-to RB, it's wide open, IMO.

What about taking a risk with Corey Dillon as your last pick? Has anyone done this? Jason Wood, please pick up the white courtesy phone. :popcorn: I have heard no rumors behind Dillon popping up somewhere. I could see him with the Giants and relegate Jacobs back to the short-yardage bruising back he was with Tiki Barber. I could also see him Tampa Bay, if Cadillac can't hold up. Have any of you heard any rumors of a Dillon sighting?

There's always Leon Washington - if TJ goes down, he has upside. He certainly impressed me last season in a few games.

 
Adrian Peterson and here is why. Cedric Benson does not look all that great right now and the Bears OL is good. And if Grossman is going to keep the defenses honest which he will...Peterson can succeed when he finds his way on the field. I still have a hard time getting over that benson did not tear a ligament or break a bone but basically took himself out of the game in the Super Bowl...he certainly is no Jack Youngblood.

 
I love Sammy Morris for this. Maroney won't hold up all year and Morris is due to get the goalline chances. He will help out even if Maroney is healthy all year.

 
In PPR leagues, I think Lorenzo Booker and Brian Leonard may be involved in the game plan enough to at least be serviceable spot starters. You could add Sammy Morris to this list as I think he will spell Maroney often and has the size/ability to carry the load in the event of injury.

But, my "vote" goes to the other Adrian Peterson. He has shown some potential and I am very wary of Cedric Benson. If I had to pick a situation we're the "starter" doesn't finish the season as the starter, this is it.

I think Ron Dayne has a shot at performing better than Green and need not wait for him to be injured to take over the job and put up decent RB #2 numbers.
 
Peterson has almost a 2:1 advantage in votes with 46 of them now, but very little posting going on about him. Makes me think the sharks don't really want everyone to know they are targeting him.

Yes fine, but what are the odds that guy can actually do anything better? I think most are looking at these backs and trying to find the person that would have success, maybe even better success over the guy that is in front of him.Great thread Pasquino

Danny Ware, NYJ. Do I think he'll be that late round stud? Not really, but I don't think any RB here will be, barring an injury. That's what this is, IMO, guessing on which team will lose their top RB. I'll go with Ware because Jones is already hurt, reportedly a calf which was the result of an achilles strain in the same leg. Hunt is a safer guess, because Westbrook always gets dinged up sooner or later. I don't see any of these RB's displacing their respective team's starter based soley on performance. Chicago will ride Benson off a cliff and out of the playoffs before they give up on him. That was made clear as crystal when they traded Jones.

Barring an injury, I think Leonard will be the best of this group because I expect the Rams to do what they can to keep Jackson fresh and healthy.

What could possibly have you thinking that? Green looked great last night and when you compare there careers to date... well... you can't compare their careers. Oh, and the fact that Green was paid millions to come to the Texans to boot.

Shipp in a BIG way. 16 teamers, this guy is a golden gamble round about round 12 or 13 when you are looking for ANYTHING. Edge's effectivenss and injury history, versus the room that could be had with those Wides, Pope and maturing Leinhart, if Shipp got a sniff, I think he could really excel. He's shown flashes before.

I also like Leonard's skill set, though I don't expect SJ to get injured.

However, Michael Robinson has ability, a line, and a back who could get dinged. He may get goaline touches along the way.

Not familar with Wolfe or Hunt as players or their given situation.

Can we really have any confidence in Arrington as of now though? The guy looks like a prime time stiff. At the very least, Shipp has shown glimpses on some pretty weak AZ teams.I don't know why the reached on Arrington in the first place anyway, but I'll defer to your sources, because I obviously haven't watched their camp nor seen a snap of the AZ preseason. Just basing on prior NFL abilty. Arrington never seemed able to get out of his own way to me.
 
I see Shipp has been mentioned, but I like J.J. Arrington as a dark horse RB. I think he would be the value play if Edge went down. And he probably will be undrafted in almost any league. Reports are that J.J. had a great training camp and has looked good.

 
I know the ADP on Droughns is pretty high, but I got him really late in a draft last night. Took him and A. Peterson (CHI) back to back.

 
I picked Tony Hunt off of your list just based on his use as the GL back last week (and that I think he is the 2nd best RB on that team - not a buck fan).

For RBs not on your list, I like Jerome Harrison. He will get touches and receptions in CLE, even with Jamal Lewis there (who may or may not be back to his old form).

 
I'll have to throw in a vote for Adimchinobe Echemandu. There are RBs on the above list who I'd take ahead of Echemandu, but overall I think the list is basically "guys who could produce if the starter went down," and I think Echemandu could be effective. He seems slotted into the backup role at least for the first four games, and I think the buzz around camp is that he represents the Anti-Moss (and to some extent, the Anti-Jordon and Anti-Brooks and Anti-Porter); he may not have as much flashiness, but he's a hard worker who can be surprisingly effective. If Kiffin wants to make a statement about changing the culture of laziness, you could see Echemandu starting if Jordan goes down, and in any case he may be vulturing TDs (seems the team is leaning towards cutting Crockett).

 
I'll throw a vote in for Ahmad Bradshaw.

Been the best RB for the Giants this pre-season, although admittedly against backup defenses, and there has been a lot of good buzz about him.

Although I like Jacobs, he's a long way from an entrenched veteran, and names like Droughans, Ward and Grant aren't the most intimidating names on a depth chart.

He's not the biggest guy around, but at about Tiki's size, there's a recent precedent for a full time job in NY for a guy his size.

 
All these votes for Adrien Peterson! Not an outlandish pick, for sure, but I don't know if FBG's can be completely unbiased when it comes to him :-)

Booker or Chatman I'm looking at as well.
