Looking for a late-round backup QB with the most upside. I've picked a rookie (Rivers), a vet in a new passer-friendly system (Kitna), and a young QB with continuity (Simms).

Which approach gives you the highest ceiling?

(Feel free to add your alternatives. I'm just trying to pick the three situations I find the most different from each other.)

Rivers will be looked upon to keep from losing the game. San Diego is LTs team, and it will continue to be so for the forseable future. Rivers will put up decent numbers, but nothing spectacular.

I'm a Lion homer, but I'm not too excited about Kitna. I think he could be a sleeper, but I'm making sure I've got solid insurance if I've got him on the team. Martz brings his high flying offense to town, but I see the Lions picking a QB next year. Kitna is not the answer, he will give you a huge game, followed with a pedestrian game.

My pick for breakthrough QB this year is Chris Simms. He really started to fire the last 4-5 weeks last season and that will continue. Mix that in with Gruden and you have the potential for some fireworks. Gruden is one of the most aggressive coaches in the NFL and isn't afraid to throw the ball downfield. Simms will put up some great numbers this year and vault into the ranks of the top-QBs in the league.

IMO Kitna has the most upside, if only because of his o-coordinator. I don't think he's the most talented but I think he's got the most potential.

IMO, it has to be Kitna. Look what Martz has done in the past with the Rams, Redskins, and Rams again working with a variety of no name QBs.

I like all these guys as late round picks, really. Practically you can just wait and take the last of any of them. In my rankings I had it

Kitna

Simms

Rivers

So if I HAD to pick one it would be Kitna (his dream scenario upside is greater than the other two), but again, I'd be happy with any of them where you're looking at taking them.

Kitna. Martz offense with talent around him. Rivers won't be allowed to decide games with his arm very often. Simms' schedule is brutal.

DY,How concerned are you over the performance of the Detroit OL in the preseason? Yes, it's preseason. Yes, there are injuries. However, no QB throws well from on his back. If the Detroit OL was middle of the pack, I'd pick Kitna over Rivers and Simms without hesitation. Unfortunately, middle of the pack may be out of reach for this group.

I don't worry until the games actually count. I realize that is likely too late for fantasy purposes, but I don't look at preseason games with much more than a passing fancy. Maybe you are onto something, maybe not. I haven't seen Detroit play at all. Most teams use a variety of players in a variety of combinations, making concrete conclusions next to impossible. I would be a lot more concerned iof the cupboards were completely bare or if the starters had played every down and still couldn't get it done.By comparison, the Redskins have looked terrible, but I still think they'll be in the hunt this year.

I'm just as in the dark as you are concerning the OL. I like the Martz presence, Kitna's experience (people seem to forget he has been a productive starter in two different systems), skill position talent, a favorable schedule, and mediocre defense. The weakest link to me is the questionable OL.

nobody is really givin any love to my late rd QB2...Brad Johnson. He wont be spectacular, but i think 3300/25/13 would be considered realistic for him and he could easily surpass that if the Vikes D stumbles a bit and they're playing from behind. I've been getting him in the 12-14th rds lately, which is fine with me.

It's Kitna and it's not even close. I think he's got a 50% chance of finishing in the top 12 QBs. He has at least as much talent as Warner/Bulger and has a very high ceiling in a Martz system.
