Dolphins | Culpepper looks super

Tue, 16 May 2006 11:18:44 -0700

According to John Czarnecki of <A href="http://www.kffl.com/link/189">FOXSports.com, Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) appears to be ahead on his rehabilitation and could be ready for the start of training camp. He may not be ready for a full workload, but he should be ready to participate in most drills. Word from Miami is that he looks "super."

Then why was John Clayton the other day discussing the timetable for Culpepper's return as some time in November? Maybe that would still be considered "super" based on the severity of his injury?

Try not to shoot the messenger. I am a Dolphins fan, but all I did was post an exact piece of news without taking any specific bias or judgment. I was under the impression that the more information we had access to, the better.

I'm not shooting the messanger, only the mixed messages that we are all getting. One place will say Culpepper will be fine and is ahead of schedule, whil others will suggest he might miss half or all of the season. The bottom line is probably somewhere in the middle on these type of things, but where exactly we won't likely know for months. From a fantasy perspective, C-Pep is still a risky pick for redraft leagues and likely will remain so up until opening day.

I just want to say there's a big differance between looking super in pratices where you prolly aren't playing at full speed and no one touches you and looking super in the actual games

defensive much? i don't think he was attacking you personally, just addressing the statement.

Couch Potato thoughts on the matter...

Yudkin is just a mean, mean man, going around shooting messengers like this. :P

I just drafted CPep in a dynasty league; therefore he will be ready (I might as well use the typical fantasy football logic I see on this message board all the time).

CPep very well may miss half a season - the second half, after he's been crunched again because he was running around in a game before he should have been.

Finally, to FRTWRTR: buy some vowels, fella... and do people really say 'prolly'?

I've banned many a messenger in my day. Have to keep my reputation as one of the meanest Board Nazis, you know . . .

If Culpepper is almost 100%, would Saban play him ahead of Harrington?

75%?

Limited to be a pocket passer?

If he doesn't start, but is able to suit up, would he be the backup and/or the holder for FGs?

You would like to think the reason they went out and got Harrington is to allow Cpep to be 100% when he hits the field.

Did anyone catch the Arena League playoff game yesterday between Orlando and Philly? Culpepper was in the stands. He's put on some weight, not muscle, just extra weight, that could be expected given he hasn't been as active as he normally would be. Once he's back into "football" shape there should be less strain on the knee. I read about the "timetable" for him getting back, those estimates are usually failry conservative, the Dolphins aren't going to rush him back, they made that clear by signing Harrington, but I think Daunte will be fine and wouldn't be at all surprised to see him starting in September.

A QB can play with a knee brace no prob, we've seen Carson Palmer do that. The problem is that the brace makes the knee feel more stable and breeds a sort of fake confidence in the knee. It really won't protect him much from a hit. Unless the Fins trade for Orlando Pace on one side and Jonathan Ogden on the other, he's gotta be able to take a hit to play.

This is why redraft leagues should have the draft as close to the start of the NFL season as possible.

On the other hand, "risk" creates potentential reward. His ADP will slip accordingly, further many owners simply have Cpep on their DND (do not draft) list. Owners who have equal parts of intestinal fortitude and luck could just get themselves a great value on draft day when all is said and done at the end of the season.

I had similar surgery to Daunte in 1997. Walking in a straight line was possible after 6 months. Lateral movements with bracing weight 13 months. One hit on that knee and he will probably crumble. I really like Daunte but if he returns this year I think it could very well be another Chad Pennington. I would avoid him this year like the plague.

You had the same kind of surgery and you're telling me that one of my projected keepers crumbles after one hit? ...Yikes!

Look out messenger, I got ya in my sites! :)

I think a bigger question than his health is whether or not the guy can play without Moss..he looked horrible last year even before the injury.

Now he goes to a team with an entirely new coaching staff using a system that is different than the offense he was familiar with in Minnesota...He also plays with a 2nd year RB and a shakey o-line...and lets not forget 3 blown knee ligaments..

he could be a high value player relative to where he's picked in an FFL draft..

but I'm leaning more towards the cautious side with him..

as far as him looking 'super' , its still May, anyone can look super in 7-on-7 drills with no hitting or touching players , especially the QB's who wear those bright red jerseys like C-pep... :lmao:

its a world of difference to look super in May then it is to look super in September , on opening day..

we'll have to see about that..

That would prolly explain why you're posting here rather QBing for MIA.

I think actions speak louder than words this time of year. If Miami thought there was an inkling of a chance that Culpepper would be ready for the opener, why burn the draft pick on Harrington? Wait a couple of weeks and he's yours for nothing but a contract.

I know they say they wanted him in for mini-camp, but I just think that proves the point- they're pretty sure Culpepper won't be ready (or, ready enough). I also agree with other posters that maybe Culpepper is just average without Randy Moss. We'll see.
