Laurence Maroney Potentially Involved (1 Viewer)

Just heard on WEEI. Recap: a car was stopped in St. Louis by the police last night and they were investigating the occupants. Maroney was in a car behind those in the first car. Police hauled him in with the others and are apparently trying to get an arrest warrent on Maroney. Maroney's people (of course) said he is not involved and he will be cleared. The police for now are acting otherwise. That's all there is at the moment.

A high speed chase was involved apparently, and Maroney was in a separate car behind the car being chased? I'm sorta confused here. See quote below by his publicist (Maroney has a publicist? Yeesh)

http://www.kmov.com/news/mobile/NFL-player...-114092529.html

Maroney's publicist told News 4 that Maroney was not with the car involved in the high speed chase. He just happened to be behind the car, ‘by pure coincidence.’
How does anyone become "accidently" involved in a high speed chase (without an actual accident)?

Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney has been arrested in St. Louis on drugs and weapons allegations. His publicist said Tuesday that he did nothing wrong.

St. Louis police said five people in an Infiniti Q56 were arrested Monday night. Police declined to name the suspects but said all five are accused of possessing marijuana. Three, including a 25-year-old man, were accused of unlawful use of a weapon. Maroney, 25, is a native of suburban St. Louis. No one has been formally charged.

Maroney's publicist, Jane Higgins, confirmed that he was one of those arrested in the Infiniti on the weapons allegation. She denied Maroney was arrested for drugs.

"He holds a permit to carry a concealed weapon," Higgins said in a statement. "He was not arrested for any drugs nor was he involved in a high-speed chase. He was released without being charged with any offense and we do not anticipate he will be charged with any criminal offense."

Police spokeswoman Erica Van Ross said one of the men had a valid concealed weapon permit but that state law prohibits possessing a gun while under the influence of drugs. She declined to elaborate.

Van Ross said the process of seeking charges could take up to a month.

Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said, "We're aware of the matter but have no additional comment at this time."

Van Ross said that around 10:30 p.m. Monday, officers saw three vehicles near Chaifetz Arena causing traffic to slow because the vehicles repeatedly stopped so occupants could talk to people on the street. Officers also suspected those in the vehicles were smoking marijuana.

Officers pulled over the Infiniti and a GMC Yukon; the third vehicle fled.

That's what his publicist is saying. Others have indicated he was arrested for possession of marijuana and unlawful use of a weapon. Probably still too soon to tell what the real situation is.
Broncos RB Maroney arrested in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS—Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney has been arrested in St.

Van Ross said that inside the Infiniti officers found three weapons -- a .45-caliber handgun, a 9mm pistol and a .223 -caliber rifle -- along with a substance believed to be marijuana. Five of the six people in the Infiniti were arrested and released pending application of warrants, Van Ross said.

Five other people were in the Yukon. One of them, a 28-year-old man, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Maroney and Chad Jackson...how a franchise that is supposed to value intelligence drafted those two dopes is still one of the bigger questions of the BB/Pioli era...

Apparently he was just released, so I'm guessing his agent/publicist was correct.
Police said it could take a month to file charges.
Evidently Maroney has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. While he can carry a concealed weapon, he can't do so if he's under the influence of drugs. It would seem that this is the bone of contention from the police. His publicist says he was not involved with any drugs. The police are saying that he unlawfully carried a weapon and was under the influence. So, I'm guessing they need to get the drug test back before they can file charges. Until then, any lawyer Maroney can afford can get him out of jail on no solid evidence until they get the test back. I can't believe I typed all that about Lawrence Maroney, even if he's a hometown kid...

Glad you did. It pieces it all together pretty well. Bottom line is that although his publicist suggests he won't be charged, the likelihood is that he still will be charged. If so, bottom line for fantasy purposes is that any thought of a starting job, or even RBBC spot, next year (he is a UFA now), already a low percentage probability, can likely be forgotten. Even if not charged, teams will likely take into consideration this event when considering him for his next place of employment. Any dynasty player still rostering him in deep dynasty leagues and holding out a glimmer of hope he might resurrect his career next year (as I have been in a couple of leagues) probably can retire that thought and move on and roster another longshot instead.

What drug test?

From the article:

Police say applications for warrants could take up to a month, pending the results of a crime lab report on what is believed to be marijuana.
Now, whether that's a drug test or hair sample or whatever, I'm sure (if they know their jobs at all) it's something that is admissible as evidence.ETA -- actually, as I think some more about it, maybe this will only amount to a pot possession charge. Note earlier in the article that Maroney's publicist said "He was released without being charged with any offense and we do not anticipate he will be charged with any criminal offense."

She said 'any criminal offense,' not 'any offense.'

I don't know the laws in Missouri but perhaps he will be charged with a misdemeanor.

If I was an NFL player and a bonehead, as soon as the season was over I would get out of the USA and go somewhere where nobody knows who I am and the cops can be bribed.
