Lawrence Jackson, DE SEA (1 Viewer)

Tapp was a popular sleeper/up-and-coming pick last year, and this kind of surprised me. I know Tapp is kind of undersized, but I thought he had a good motor and seems like many had him ranked in the top 20-25 for dynasty.

Now it looks like there may be more to worry about than originally feared from Jackson.

Defensive coordinator John Marshall said the plan is to start rookie Lawrence Jackson for the second straight exhibition game. Jackson started Saturday. Jackson and veteran Darryl Tapp are competing for a starting job at defensive end.
The FBG outlook for Tapp:
Tapp owners probably shouldn't be too concerned by the presence of Jackson (at least not this season, as most young DL take a few years to mature and develope). While Jackson is technically sound (as would be expected for a four year USC starter), he isn't necessarily a quick-twitch athlete and may always be better against the run. He also could be more of a long term replacement for the still spry but aging Kerney, and could shift to the inside on passing downs ala Justin Tuck, which wouldn't bump Tapp from the starting rotation. The FBG staff consensus ranking has him falling just outside the starting DL dividing line, but he has top 15-20 upside if things break right.
If he stays on the field a la Tuck, he might at least have more opportunities. Norton already highlighted some of his positives in Aug 2nd Eyes of the Guru (which I won't reprint here since it's paid content)... seems like he might be getting that opportunity sooner rather than later.Worth grabbing now? Additional thoughts, particularly from anyone who has seen the Seahawks games? Jene/John, have you guys had a chance to break down those games at all??

I'm a Seahawks fan, and I think they will use a bit of a DE rotation with these guys. Jackson has looked very good in pre-season action so far.

Here are the Seahawk's web sites blurbs.

Another IDP to notice is LB David Hawthorne. He is a nasty hitter and is a longer-term guy, since there's no immediate opportunity.

Lots of young guys making a name in pre-season for the 'Hawks.

Right now Jackson is starting because Kerney has been banged up throughout camp. When Patrick comes back, Tapp will be the other starting defensive end but the 3 will be in a rotation (Seahawks always rotate defensive lineman, inside and outside). Eventually Jackson may takeover as starter for Tapp but now in the next 2 months. Also, word is that Jackson may slide inside and play some defensive tackle on pass rush downs like he did at USC.

There was a good discussion about him on The Audible:

Looks like we have a sleeper at DE.

below excerpted from FBG SEA Team Report on defense, from right after the draft in early may...tapp (starter section) - Tapp is short for a prototypical DE at 6'1" but not small at a listed 270. He also set a career high in sacks with 7 (from his rookie 3 sacks), though more than half came in a 4 sack outburst against the injury-stricken OL of the Rams. A greater rotational role may have been signalled by the addition of prized 1st rounder Lawrence Jackson.

jackson (backup section) - The Seahawks envision 1st rounder Jackson playing several important roles. At the least he will be able to spell the aging Kerney and undersized Tapp (who both may have worn down at the end of the season) in a rotation, as well as shift inside on passing downs, similar to how the Giants Justin Tuck was deployed so successfully in the Super Bowl. Jackson has a very well rounded and developed game, and his college body of work included 30.5 sacks as a four year starter for powerhouse USC. He could be talented enough to encroach on Tapp's snaps and push him into a more situational pass rushing role (where he may be better suited).

I wanted to add a cheap dynasty sleeper and was torn between him and Brian Johnston. I opened bidding on Jackson given the pedigree and good things I've been reading.

I would definitely appreciate thoughts about him this week if anyone manages to see the games. (Unfortunately, I have no access to NFLN - f'ing Time Warner).

There should be a game thread in the SP.

I will watch & report back. I've been trying to watch every pre-season game, but I don't miss my two teams: Eagles & Seahawks.
