League Commissioner Unilaterally Extends Trade Dealine 1 Week (1 Viewer)

My league has always had a trade deadline of week 10. Clearly stated in our rules. I just received a email from the commish that he is extending the trade deadline. Not sure of the motive. All I know is that my team is performing well (after losing Brady week 1) having high points for the last 3 weeks and just outside the points lead. A flury of trade activity has been occurring all week, although I am taking a pass on it as I have a very solid line-up. We are not a keeper league.

Should I object to his change of rules in the middle of the season? Other than the fact that we have rules that need to be observed, what would the basis for my objection be at this time?

You could object based on the rules change, and of course the fact that you're not one who's looking for a trade--though that's not an objection that will matter to the other owners.

If you can find out why it was changed it might change your mind--or might define your objection.

Sounds like you object more because of your advantage than because the rules were changed. I think your complaint is legit anyway, but it will make you look whiny. Will these trades really hurt your chances to win it all? Maybe. They could also help you.

I wouldn't request that trading be shut down. I'd confirm that this week is the absolute, final deadline and that there will be no more extensions. Then, if I lost in the playoffs to a team who scored a last-minute trade this week, that's the point where I'd get publicly whiny. =)

Rules should never be changed mid-season. Was this put up for a vote at least?
Winner winner chicken dinner. Rules should not be changed mid-season. You start the season with the rules agreed upon, you finish the season with the rules agreed upon. If you want to change it, change it for next year. Make sure your league constitution is worded this way.Although extenuating circumstances could warrant a mid-season change, but it should not be done unilaterally by the commish. There should be concensus among the league.

I 100% agree with the first statement and 100% agree with the question asked. Don't ever change mid season unless the owners vote on it - and I'd say 2/3 to full consensus should be required.

Kinda funny that, in this thread, everyone is saying "No rules changes midseason!"

But in another thread earlier this week, where the question was about a two part trade (the 2nd half of the trade would be completed at the end of the year) and the league didn't have anything in the rules against such a trade, the responses were along the lines of - of course it shouldn't be allowed or "This is why you appoint a commish, so they can make these types of judgement calls".

Not saying it's right or wrong or that it even pertains to this thread - and nobody in this thread probably even posted in the other thread - just an interesting observation.

whether or not your team is doing well or horrible shouldn't influence your decision to object or stay quite. If the rules are in place for that year for a week 10 trade deadline, then that's how it should be until the year is over and then you guys can talk about changing whatever rules for the following year.IMO, it's not very responsible of your commish to say he's going to extend the deadline and not give the reason why he's doing it.When you start doing things like that, it weakens your league.

As a Commish in one league, and having been in a number of other leagues -- never change the rules mid-season. Unless it's to close a loop hole or something. Otherwise, it's a bad idea. I agree that if you change it, it should be for NEXT season and beyond. To just up and extend it a week is an abuse of power imo...

Yes, trades are fun, let it go......etc. etc.

But the important point here is that a rule is changed midseason and the commish does it on his own. In this case there may be no motive except to just "extend it just because he wants to" but any type of rule change should be put to a vote at the least.

In my league any "midseason" rule change has to be unanimous and during the offseason at the banquet all ruyle changes must gain 50% of the vote to be passed. Rule changes NOT proposed at the banquet must be done at 100% approval. It's strict but the bottom line is no one even thinks of changing anything "midseason"

In THIS case it doesn't sound like there's any evil motive going on, but if the commish extends the trade deadline simply because HE wants to do more trading I have a problem with that. I know some think "what's the big deal" but come on.....why have rules and why pretend they require league input if the commish can just do what he wants anwyays?

Is there any language in your bylaws or anything about rule changes? I'd simply remind him that the trade deadline is Week 10, plain and simple and your objection is simply because he is changing the rules for his own benefit. It's not that complicated.

if the commish extended the trade deadline so he could work on a blockbuster trade for him self, he should be removed as the commish and shot.
