Byron Leftwich-QB-Jaguars Sep. 17 - 7:56 pm et ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Falcons will meet with free agent Byron Leftwich and could sign him as soon as Tuesday.Leftwich will undergo a physical Tuesday. Coach Bobby Petrino indicated Monday that he's less than confident in Joey Harrington as his starter, so Leftwich could get a chance to play near midseason or down the stretch.
Strange that a franchise would thinkAnderson or Simms > LeftwichThe Falcons were always going to sign another QB after Shockley went down in pre season, but not trade for one. They'd been hoping the Browns would release Anderson, or the Bucs Simms, but as neither of those guys came loose, they're giving Lefty a look see. If all goes well tonight with his physical & their face to face, Lefty could be a Falcon by tomorrow.
I assume Leftwich is going to cost a lot more then either of those guys would have.Strange that a franchise would thinkAnderson or Simms > LeftwichThe Falcons were always going to sign another QB after Shockley went down in pre season, but not trade for one. They'd been hoping the Browns would release Anderson, or the Bucs Simms, but as neither of those guys came loose, they're giving Lefty a look see. would be kind of odd to sign the cousin of a player who caused the team and city so much griefSeriously is ABrooks not a better option? I just don't understand this.
Ummm....no. See for example the performance of the Jacksonville Jaguars for the last 3 years.Dilfer >>>>>>>>> Harrington >>>>>>>>>>> Leftwich >> Jeff GeorgeI really think if Lefty had signed with the Vikes that MN would be a playoff team. All he would have to do is manage the game really, they can stop the run and with him under center to keep the defenses honest they could run the ball better on offense. 10-6 for sure.
IMO Aaron Brooks is death to a football team. Bad arm and bad decisions. Better to play a new, young QB that gets the same results but with at least a hope to get better.Seriously is ABrooks not a better option? I just don't understand this.

LOL@ Harrington better than Leftwich the last 3 years. What are you basing this on?Lefty with Jags2004 9-72005 12-42006 8-8Harrington with Lions and Fins2004 6-102005 5-112006 6-10Leftwich puts up better stats also. he had some injury concerns and didnt get along with his coach in Jacksonville, but he a far from the failure that Harrington has been his whole career.Ummm....no. Nah, Lefty takes about 1 1/2 - 2 seconds to determine who he's throwing to then about 2 more seconds to actually release the ball.Harrington can fire bullets but he just hops around behind the line like a bunny for about 8 seconds until his offensive line can do no more.Petrino says Harrington is taking too long to get rid of the ball... so they try to sign Mr. Windup???![]()
He was option C. They were hoping for either A) Simms / Anderson or B) Simms / Anderson but will now have to settle for C) LeftyI was saying Lefty in Atlanta as soon as he was cut.... buuuut hey, a couple of weeks into the season ain't bad...![]()
My thoughts exactly Mungo. But they're not gonna trade a draft pick for a QB & as their first two choices never shook loose, Lefty is the best of the rest I guess.Petrino says Harrington is taking too long to get rid of the ball... so they try to sign Mr. Windup???![]()

This happens all of the time in sports, especially in the NFL. If one team decides to part ways with a player unexpectedly, the rest of the league gets overly suspicious and negative about that player. And it's not just in getting cut. It's on the trade block and free agency as well. Marshall Faulk goes for a 2nd & 5th rounder. Randy Moss goes for a 4th. Those 2 players were basically put up for auction, and the interest just wasn't there. Only one team was seriously interested in Drew Brees. Nobody would touch Travis Henry once the Bills decided McGahee was better. There are tons of examples of one team souring on a player in one fashion or another, and the rest of the league follows suit by burying their own talent evaluations and turning their heads just because everybody else is doing it. Where's the vision? Where's the courage of your convictions? You don't win by following the herd and eschewing your own evaluations.Edit to add: a perfect baseball example is Mike Lowell. Throughout most of the 2004 season, he was talked about as an MVP candidate for the Marlins. Then he has an off year in 2005, and the Marlins can't give him away even if they pay a chunk of his salary. In order to get Josh Beckett, the Red Sox had to agree to take Lowell (an MVP candidate just a year ago) and his salary off the Marlins' hands. Any team in the league could have had Beckett if only they would take Lowell as well. It blew my mind that nobody else was willing to take a chance on an all-star caliber player coming off of one down season. All jokes aside, there were a lot of reasons that Leftwich got cut that had nothing to do with poor play. He and JDR didn't get along, he was due 5m for the upcoming season, he has an injury history, just to name a few. In Byron's last 3 games as a Jags he had 555 yards, 5 TDs and 1 INT. 2 of his last 3 games his QB rating was over 100. Don't lose perspective just because he got cut. This is a much better than average in season free agent pick up and where ever he goes, you should keep an eye on him. I'm sure LHucks can tell you his fantasy points per games history.![]()
Was Benedict Arnold a better right hand man for Ceasar during the Roman Empire? Is Brooks more talented than Leftwich? Maybe, but his intangibles reek of that latino guy in Carlitos Way (who's been in every other film the last 15 years) who betrays Pacino in the end and leads to his assassanation. (bad sp noticfication). There's a reason Brooks isn't on a roster right now, and it isn't because of his talent.ftr, i would sign Leftwich if I was the ATL. He is an upgrade over pianoman. He'll do whatever it takes to win, and has more talent. His performance in the 2001 MAC Championship game sold me on having this guy on my team whenever possible.Seriously is ABrooks not a better option? I just don't understand this.
As a Patriots fan living in Jacksonville and therefore having the "privilege" of watch the Jags play each and every week, excluding blackouts, I am here to tell you that while most of your comments are technically true, the notion of BL being a great leader is laughably inaccurate. The offense has been horrifically inept since the Brunell/Smith/Taylor hayday, and remains that way today due to the LAME wide receivers that are still here. Del Rio will be gone after this year; hopefully replaced by Cowher (but I suspect the Giants will pay more; maybe Coughlin comes back? j/k).As someone pointed out earlier, Leftwich's release by Jacksonville was mostly about money, partially about Del Rio, and very little to do with performance. But as soon as one team cuts the player, fans and media types will scream "long windup" and "no mobility" and ignore great leadership, accurate passer, doesn't turn the ball over, knack for late game heroics, and lower sack percentage than David Garrard last season. Yes, that last one is true. Despite fans parroting the "immobile" and "statue" criticisms, Leftwich had a lower sack percentage than the extremely nimble David Garrard.
I live in Savannah, so I get most Jacksonville games as well. I don't understand why you just called any indication of Leftwich's leadership laughably inaccurate, yet you backed it up by talking about how lame his WR were. Are you saying Leftwich's WR were lame because he was a poor leader?SeniorVBDStudent said:As a Patriots fan living in Jacksonville and therefore having the "privilege" of watch the Jags play each and every week, excluding blackouts, I am here to tell you that while most of your comments are technically true, the notion of BL being a great leader is laughably inaccurate. So many others set this post straight so I don't have anything to add other than you knew you were wrong when you posted it.SeniorVBDStudent said:Ummm....no. If Leftwich is added will it significantly effect Joe Horn's value or has Horn seen his days as a FF value disappear completely??So many others set this post straight so I don't have anything to add other than you knew you were wrong when you posted it.SeniorVBDStudent said:Ummm....no. ....after realizing that there is nobody there who will step up and catch it. But the WR situation in ATL isn't exactly an upgrade.Nah, Lefty takes about 1 1/2 - 2 seconds to determine who he's throwing to then about 2 more seconds to actually release the ball

Meanwhile, Chicago convinces itself that Grossman is their man and Minnesota does the same with Jackson. As someone pointed out earlier, Leftwich's release by Jacksonville was mostly about money, partially about Del Rio, and very little to do with performance.
