Before Jimmy retired I was very high on Leftwich's prospects this year as his '05 ppg was very impressive given it was only his third year in the NFL. After Jimmy retired I bumped him down because I had some concerns with the inexperience of his receiving targets.

Now that I've been able to see a few Jax games in the preseason I have to say I've been impressed by Wilford, Williams and Jones...not to mention what appears to be an improved running game with Drew/Jones/Taylor all healthy and running well.

Currently ranked #20 by FBG, despite a ppg that was ranked #8 last year...Lefty is back on my value list.

I concur. Only concern is injury b/c he likes to hang in the pocket a little too long....handcuff Garrard as insurance. On a related note: People in Jax don't seem to like Lefty, anyone know why?

:hey: Don't forget TE Lewis' getting in the mix as well.
He hasn't done much in the preseason. I really don't think Lefty needs a huge year out of him in order for Lefty to present value. JAX TEs were non-existent last year and he was #8 in QB ppg. If Lewis does contribute it will be an added bonus though.

JAX WRs.

The safe bet is Jones/Wilford/Williams, but is it the right one?

It seems training camp & pre-season have not favored Matt Jones (injuries will do that). Or Reggie Williams.

Wilford has got great press and I do beleive he is a starter. Could he be Jimmy's replacement?

What about Chad Owens? Noticed the numbers he's putting up? His game has improved quite a bit. Could he be JAX's #3 or even start opposite Wilford, IF Matt Jones continues to have injury problems?

Where's Hankston?

He was on pace for '03 McNair numbers last year (when he won the MVP), and I don't see how he'll do worse this year with a better team and another year under his belt.Definite value.

Again, Lefty did not run as McNair did, and McNair only played 13.25 games that year. Slight difference.

The knocks on Leftwich are:-not mobile enough, takes too many sacks-holds onto the ball too long, takes too many sacks-has long windup, so if hit before he can take a sack, he fumbles the ballDon't get me wrong, I think Leftwich is light years better than Garrard. But there are quite a few in town who are enamored with Garrard's mobility.back to the original point-I'd be hesitant to raise my evaluation of Leftwich. Not because of something he's done. Rather the offensive line has looked miserable the first two weeks. Mo Williams looked like a pylon next to Peppers last week. The middle of the line with Meester and Naeole have provided little running room for the backs. The first team O has scored 10 points combined for the two weeks while giving 7 last week.I think the offense will be better with Matt Jones this week and Marcedes Lewis in the regular season. But they need to get their O-line problems fixed quick.

Jags fan from Philly here. Hopefully I can answer a few questions from this thread. Fans are probably split 50-50 on Lefty down there. The main reason he isn't liked is that he isn't Mark Brunell. Those fans who understand that change isn't a bad thing tend to see his talent and support him. Those that are still stuck in the early years of the franchise hate him and want Garrard as the starter because his scrambling ability reminds them of Brunell. Me? I love Lefty, despite becoming a Jags fan solely because of Brunell being traded there (i'm also a big U-Dub fan). As for the WR situation, unless there's an unforseen event in the last 2 weeks leading up to the season and provided there aren't any injuries, Jones and Wilford will be the top 2 WRs. Being a U-Dub fan, I was doing backflips when we drafted Reggie Williams, but he's clearly not one of the 2 best WRs on the team. He just doesn't make plays. He's still good enough to be the #3 and I despite Chad Owens good numbers, I'd be shocked if he saw significant enough playing time to make any fantasy contribution, except in extremely deep leagues. I do think the team was ready to turn a corner last year right before Leftwich got hurt, as he and Jones were really hitting it off, but once he went out, Jones' production fell. Hopefully MJ can get healthy quickly and the two of them can gear it up again.

That's my point. He doesn't make the plays & Owens is making them. A lot of them. I think Reggie falls to #4.

He hasn't done much in the preseason because he suffered a high ankle sprain, but the Jags were raving about his hands before the injury. He could end up being Byron's most dependable target.

Wow, RBM, you must be having a rough day to be so critical over a conga line of dancing pickles.

Was just wondering what happened to get the guy so excited? Is Lhucks' endorsement that huge?

I wouldn't say "a lot" of plays. He's made more than Reggie, but he's never gone against a first-string defense. (I know I can't prove that he's never played a play aginst one in a preseason game, but if he has, they've been few and far between). Regardless, my belief is that while Reggie's draft position isn't enough for him to be able to hang onto the #1 or #2 job, it is enough to keep #3. Additionally, Reggie was the only offensive highlight from Saturday's game versus the Panthers and the team is looking to use him in specific areas, mainly over the middle, since he can take a hit. They want to do whatever is possible to open up the outside for MJ and with Marcedes hurting and being out for what sounds like the first couple/few weeks, he'll be looked at to fill the pass catching void in the middle of the field.
