LenDale White on the way out

Posted by Danny O'Neil

LenDale White is about to be released by the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks are expected to cut LenDale White on Friday, and in fact a press release was posted on the Seattle Seahawks' Web site a little bit after noon stating White had been released.

The release is no longer posted online, and in fact the content has been deleted, but you can see the headline that appeared via a screen grab of the Google search:

The Seahawks have not announced the move formally, and a message left for White's agent has not been returned, but indications are that it was not a mistake and White is going to be released.

It is a surprising move to say the least. Seattle acquired White in a trade from Tennessee on the third day of the NFL Draft. The Seahawks didn't give up much to acquire White and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson, sliding down a few spots in the fourth round and a few spots in the sixth.

White was in great shape, saying he weighed 219 pounds at the team's most recent practice that was open to reporters.

The expectation was White would not only be able to contribute, but he might be a candidate to start. He was slowed by a sore groin in the team's first minicamp after the draft, and was not present at the organized team activity that was open to the reporters on May 17. Carroll said White was tending to issues relating to the flooding in Nashville, Tenn.

Talk about taking the wind out of our sails. To Seahawks fans, I don't see that there's any way that you can see this as anything other than a HUGE let down. My apologies to the Justin Forsett apologists out there.

Carroll was asked about White specifically on Monday, and in retrospect, it was clear that perhaps White was going to have to earn a spot on the team.

"We'll see how it all fits together," Carroll said of White. "He's got a long ways to go to get back in here with this club, but we're going to certainly wait it out and see how it does."

I love the quote by GM John Schneider, "It became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seahawks."

Huge props to Bloom who was emphatically anti Lendale even at his relatively low ADP. Nothing to say about that but he saw it the way the rest of us should have.

Chalk another one up for those who favor talent over situation. LenDale was, and still is, a replacement level RB.

And I can't see any team giving him a chance. Known as a problem player, often arguing with coaches. Gets dumped by a team only a month and change after being traded to them? Something is up, and the "not ready to be a member of the Seahawks" line from the team statement should be telling.

LenDale White likely facing 4-game drug suspension, according to sources. Reasons for his release beyond that. More @ NFL.com and on NFLN

so THAT'S how he went to 219lbs so fast

With LenDale gone, I think Forsett has Top 20 upside, especially if SEA sticks with their current RB lineup. I know Pete Carroll is thrilled with Forsett's play in OTAs. He gave the media this nugget below, which looks promising for Forsett's chances this year. full write-up here

White's release also confirms the coaching staff's happiness with Forsett during the offseason program.

"He has a unique competitiveness about him that makes things happen with the ball in his hands," Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said about Forsett. "We are going to keep rolling with the process — no judgments to be passed for a long time but we need to get the ball in his hands. He is a capable third-down guy as well so there is a lot he can do. Right now, I don't see any ceiling on how much he can play. It is going to depend on the mix of the guys. He is doing a great job."

I was thinking that. Perhaps not roids but something that allowed him to lose all that weight was not legal. I don't know the exact list of banned substances by the NFL but obviously he is facing a 4 game suspension and Seattle doesn't want to hand on to him or keep him around. Does Pete Carroll get some heat over this? he was jumping around like a baffoon in the war room and I was not a fan of his hiring...this is not a good start.

Stop it...they can't all be good. I like Forsett as a COP back but people gotta stop with this top20 upside on everyone in May...he can't carry the ball 25 times a game, and Washington is not all the way back...IMO Seattle will be looking to make some more moves. I think Brian Westbrook can expect a call soon, Buffalo has Lynch and Pete knows him form Cal when they went head to head every year. If you have Forsett in Dyansty though this would be a mighty good time to cash in that chip if someone feels he is top20 potential.

I think it's great. It sends the message, "I don't care who you are, get on the same page or you're gone."

A source told FOXSports.com that the fourth-year running back was cut Friday by Seattle because his effort level “stood out like a sore thumb” compared to other players on the roster. White’s physical conditioning also was poor despite his having lost 45 pounds within the past year.

The source said the release was not related to an NFL Network report that White was facing a four-game suspension for failing a drug test. However, the positive test was confirmed although it remains uncertain whether White failed for a recreational or performance-enhancing substance.

Reunited with his college coach Pete Carroll (Southern Cal) following a trade with Tennessee, Seattle seemed a perfect spot for White to kick-start his NFL career. He had rushed for 1,110 yards in 2007 as a 260-pound bruiser and notched 15 touchdowns the following season as the red-zone replacement for Chris Johnson. White, though, received only 64 carries in 2009 as Johnson blazed to a 2,000-yard rushing season. White’s penchant for immaturity — including a record of tardiness for meetings — put him on the offseason trade block.

Seattle made draft-day deals for White and New York Jets running back Leon Washington, who is recuperating from a serious leg injury. Compensation for White included the swapping of midround picks and slots as well as Titans defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson landing in Seattle.

General manager John Schneider said Friday that "it became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks.''

Earlier in the week, White said he was ready to turn his career around.

"I was a lot younger in my mind, honestly,'' the 25-year-old White said Monday of his early seasons in the NFL and with Tennessee. "I put myself in a lot of situations.''

Now, he's in another one.

White posted this message on his Twitter page about an hour after the Seahawks made his release official: "God is good. All the time !!''

He missed one day of organized team activities this month. He said on Monday there was some "family stuff I had to take care of.''

Agent Drew Rosenhaus did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages left by The Associated Press. He was on the phone late Friday afternoon with his client sorting out a confusing sequence in which the Seahawks put out an announcement on their website around noon that White had been released, only to take it down soon after.

Hours later, Schneider made it official in a statement released by the team.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Forsett's got feature back potential, he just never gets the opportunity. We'll see if this time is any different, but I doubt it. He has top 20 upside if he gets the touches, but I'd still be willing to ship him off if someone offered a top 20 price. There's a very big difference between top 20 upside and top 20 expectations.

You could say this about alot of RB's. Wasnt too long ago people were saying it about Leon Washington.

I've been saying about him since before he was drafted. He has all the skills you look for in a feature RB, he just doesn't run a 4.4 40 and he is < 200 lbs.I was also one of those that talked up Leon too, still feel the same way about him but given his injury I don't know if I still do or not. We'll see how he does when he comes back...

I was thinking that if Carroll isn't showing favorites maybe BMW might actually be doing the good things he's been praised for so far.

The first boom you hear is Forsett stock rising!!

My second thought is Lynch will end up in Seattle

I think Hass starts until he gets hurt, or Seattle is out of the playoff hunt. From what I read, Losman is the one turning heads...but it's only May.
