Let's talk about the big game Colts @ Chiefs (8 Viewers)

My thoughts on this game and I promise I won't bring up #74 for the Chiefs in the discussion.

The Chiefs have their backs against the wall much like the Steelers did and you see what a cornered animal looks like in that situation. The Colts have shown chinks in the armor against sacks and committing turnovers the last couple of weeks, but the Chiefs haven't exactly looked good rushing the passer. Something has to give here.

The Colts will have Charvarius Ward back from a concussion and newly acquired Sauce Gardner has had two weeks (including the bye) to aclimate more to this defense. I think having him pair with Ward, Kenny Moore, and Bynum, gives the Colts more options on defense. What the Colts defense must do is not play with a bend but don't break mentality, because Mahomes will make them pay dearly for that. The Colts rank near the bottom of the league in defending the TE, so I expect a healthy dose of Travis Kelce. I would love to see the Colts' Gardner and Ward lock down their WRs as much as possible. You won't stop them, but you sure can make things harder on Mahomes. Another thing the Colts have to do is not allow Mahomes to scramble for big yardarge when the play breaks down, or is a designed RPO.

The Chiefs, just like always, abandon the run. They run mostly RPO for their run game and seldom set up a hard run. Reid all but admitted he calls a lot of runs, but because of the RPO, Mahomes changes to a pass almost all the time. Was he throwing Mahomes under the bus? Probably not, but it makes you wonder. I believe without Buckner the Colts are vulnerable to the run, but will the Chiefs go against what they do most of the time in order to exploit it? I'd be willing to bet they do a little bit, but like always, will abandon it. If the Chiefs can change things up a little bit by running more I think they have a great chance to win the game. I do think they can limit Jonathan Taylor somewhat and if they can bring enough pressure on Daniel Jones, who has struggled against pressure the last couple of weeks, that gives the Chiefs a huge advantage to win the game.

The Colts are great with play action and use the pass on early downs to set up the run, or use the pass for the lead, then use the run to win. The Chiefs are one of worst teams in the NFL against play action.

Final verdict: I expect the Chiefs to bring their A game, but Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has had two weeks to prepare for the Chiefs and has a history of success against the Chiefs when he was with the Bengals. The Chiefs have their backs against the wall and will come out like gangbusters, so if the Colts play like they have the last two weeks, they will get beat. I expect a close game under 7 points. I won't pick a winner however, because to be honest, I have no idea who will win this game.

The best offensive player on The Colts is Jonathan Taylor. Spags will attempt to limit him as much as possible and make Daniel Jones beat them...and he might.
The Chiefs can't run the ball no matter who they play so The Colts D will focus on Patrick.
The only receiver to worry about is Rice so he'll be sauced up pretty good.
The Chiefs tight ends could be very effective, not just Kelce but Grey also.
I don't think there will be a lot of "splash" plays. I think both teams will attempt to matriculate the ball downfield one first down at a time.
Vegas made the Chiefs about a field goal favorite and so far the public agrees as the line hasn't moved much.
Colts have had an extra week of preparation and are rested from their bye.
A dome team playing outdoors.
Home team needs the win more.
Throw all that in a blender and see what pours out.
I think the game goes under current over/under of 50.5
I think Patrick won't have his best game but will make a play late to win it.

The only receiver to worry about is Rice so he'll be sauced up pretty good. - This may be true, but Rice will have some success. I just don't think enough.
The Chiefs tight ends could be very effective, not just Kelce but Grey also. - True

Vegas made the Chiefs about a field goal favorite and so far the public agrees as the line hasn't moved much. - Yes, 3.5 favorites
Colts have had an extra week of preparation and are rested from their bye. - True, and Sauce Gardner had two weeks to get used to the defense and Ward is back this week for the Colts.
A dome team playing outdoors. - Ask the Bears how that worked out in a typhoon on grass in the Super Bowl against the Colts
Home team needs the win more.- I agree, their backs are against the wall, so they will play their A game.

I think the game goes under current over/under of 50.5 - I think you might be right. I think it just barely goes one way or the other. Something like 27-24.
I think Patrick won't have his best game but will make a play late to win it. - Well, he has a history of doing that, especially at home. So that's hard to argue with.

and if we are going to come in crying Sunday afternoon or Monday about the refs.....can we just get it over with now....
I thought I would save that for the game thread and not this one. I promised. Unless for some reason this is made the game thread (I hope not), then all bets are off.

The Chiefs are a different team at home this season (4-1, 28.6 PF avg, 12.8 PA avg) than on the road (1-4, 22.2 PF avg, 23.4 PA avg). Both of the Colts' losses on the season have been road losses.

I can't bring myself to root for the Chiefs in this game even though it would be advantageous to my Patriots' chances of a 1st round bye. But I'll look at this from the glass half full approach in that one of these teams isn't going to win. I think KC takes this game, but it would be quite a statement win if the Colts can go into Arrowhead and come out victorious. A good test for them as they approach the playoffs.

When the Chiefs run the ball, which isn't often, isn't it usually on 2nd down? If 1st down is an incomplete pass that puts them behind the 8 ball. Running RPO in what seems like every play, should they adjust that some? Maybe some hard runs on 1st down every now and then? I don't think they are keeping defenses honest and that is making it harder on Mahomes and their receivers.

well the NFL has assigned a rookie white hat to the game....and his crew has thrown the most flags of any crew so far this year including the most roughing the passer and false starts....so there's that...

Isn't that just peachy. Again, I'd rather not talk about the refs in this thread. Save it for the game thread.

According to PFR the Chiefs pass the ball on 2nd down at a substantially higher rate than when they run it. Most of their runs are on 1st down (151 on 1st down, 108 combined 2-4th downs)

Ok thanks. Bottom line is they run RPO almost every play it seems and most of the time Mahomes chooses to pass rather than run. That isn't keeping defenses honest.

I personally don’t see how the Chiefs win
Given how the Colts have played the last two weeks I don't see it the way you do.
2 weeks to prepare, and well rested.
Not the same thing I know, but how many times have you seen players rest at the end of the season and lose in their first playoff game? I’m not sure two weeks matter that much except for getting healthy. The Colts are getting at least two players back from injury, possibly three.

The Colts DBs are elite with Gardner, Ward, Moore, and Bynum. I'm excited to see how they do against an elite QB like Mahomes. They have Ward back this week and Sauce Gardner will play man on man against Rice. I think the Chiefs will slow down Taylor, but they don't have an answer for Warren. One small thing not being noticed is Samson Ebukam has no injury designation and appears to be ready to play for the first time since Week 7 versus the Chargers. Also, Tyquon Lewis could be back as well. He practiced on Friday. The Colts are in a good spot health wise, besides Buckner. Not to downplay that, because not having Buckner is huge. If I were the Chiefs I would attack by running the ball, but we all know they won't do that consistently. It's not in their DNA.

The sacks the Colts have given up the last two weeks is concerning. They hardly gave up any the first 8 games. I think the Chiefs will try to bring everything, including the kitchen sink to get after Jones and try and create turnovers. It may result in a few chunk plays by the Colts, but may be worth doing if you're the Chiefs. Whatever was ailing the Colts OL I hope they fixed, because it could be one of a few reasons they lose. I also fear Kelce this week. As I said before, the Colts rank near the bottom against TEs.

I can see Kelce getting 6-7 RECs also. KC uses those as an extension of their running game.

I think Kelce will be more than an extension of their non-running attack. He could go over 100 yards and have a couple of TDs in this game. The thing is, I don't think the Chiefs match up well against the Colts and will be hard pressed to stop Tyler Warren. However, if they blitz a lot and the Colts give up sacks and turnovers, that could be their undoing. The problem with that is the Chiefs haven't exactly been getting after the QB lately, if I read that right from a podcast I read earlier today. I haven't looked up the numbers.

On the radio, they rambled off some awful stats for Jones lately. I guess he's been sacked and pressured often and not handled it well.

They were saying the Colts should adjust to doing this n that and...I'm thinking "what they need to do is whatever they do with Big Jeff every year." Whatever works for one gem DT will work for the other. Double teams? Chip bump...whatever just dust off that plan for OL blocking and runs.

Jones looked so good and so comfortable. The Giants line often stunk when he was there. It would be expected that he's got some issues with the smacks he took over the years. He was loving life in Indy just weeks ago. I bet if they clean up their blocking, he gets comfy and is fixed right back up again

One thing in Jones' favor is that the Chiefs haven't been sacking the QB lately. That's why I think they will blitz a lot on Sunday. If the Colts can do some screen passes to Taylor for chunk plays, that should slow the Chiefs pass rush down. Go to Warren on those quick passes.
